Will Blizzard copy EQN with project Titan?

LeirosLeiros Member UncommonPosts: 281
So, as I was watching the EQN reveal last week I couldn't help but imagine a group of Blizzard devs scribbling furiously with their pens and clipboards as the "new features" were being unveiled. Does anyone else feel like Blizzard is just waiting copy and then improve upon whatever EQN has to offer?

    No. You are wrong.

I don't think Blizzard will copy EQN when it turns out to be the next big thing.

    I KNOW they will

Yes, this is exactly it.  Blizzard who has clearly copied everyone since the beginning of gaming and never done anything original is just sitting back waiting for the ideas to roll in from other developers so they can steal them and use them.

    </sarcasm>

Seeing as myself and MANY other people predicted EXACTLY what EQN would be before the  unveil it's not hard to say that Blizzard also could easily see where the market is going as well and was already developing in that direction.  The best part  was sitting in the chat room before the unveil and having everyone flame me for saying that it would make sense for them to do randomly generated worlds with action-based combat, then to watch the unveil and laugh.

Just because every car has similar features doesn't mean that Ferraris are copies of Model Ts. Progress requires failure and refining.

Copy it? No, take elements from it and any other popular MMOs in the next few years? Absolutely. It's what they did with WoW and it became the biggest MMO ever, why would they change the formula?

The absolute one thing Blizzard would not do is make a realistic looking game.  They would want the biggest fanbase possible and that means graphics that let old computers play the game.  I think your crystal ball is broken.

Care to elaborate on what Blizzard has done that's original?Their games in the past have been great fun and highly polished but original?

Warcraft/Starcraft was a melding of Warhammer lore with Dune 2 gameplay,Diablo was bringing rogue type games into the present with isometric shooter graphics.WoW was taking the best of what they considered the best of what had come before and merging them into a highly polished product. The last time I remember blizzard being any type of original was maybe Lost Vikings.

Also you may of predicted some of what EQN is but we don't know everything yet.Add that to the fact that there were many large groups of people predicting EQN was going to be just about everything so some of them were bound to be at least partially right.Congrats on winning the crap shoot.

Titan will most likely be the same taking bits of what they liked in recent MMOs and merging and polishing them and using whatever business model is popular at the time of release. It's worked for them before and probably will again.

blizzard has already copied it into titan.  everything has been copied into titan, titan will achieve sentience and rename itself skynet.

Blizzard has Copied and Polished bits and Pieces of a lot of Games, same as EQN is trying to do. EQN is not original but if they too can use it and polish up what they got, I see nothing wrong with it.

Use what works, polish it and improve on it, and there is NOTHING wrong with that.

Are you going to say that EQN is 100% original? No.

Use things that work and make it your own. Good for anyone who improves on an Idea. Henry Ford invented a Car, Now you have multiple car companies everywhere improving on it. Good for them.

Not saying Blizz hasnt come up with anything original but honestly they've taken good features from just about every game thats been released since wow and put it in their game so yeah im sure they will.

No no no no you got it all wrong buddy. The reality is the developers for EverQuest Next will travel to the future and STEAL Blizzards ideas for Titan. If both games have the same innovations that turn out good then Blizzard invented it first no matter which game comes out first. Blizzard invented MMOs and Verant traveled to the future and stole the idea, Blizzard invented Orcs and Tolkien also traveled to the future and stole the idea of Orcs. Hell even God stole Blizzards idea of existence, because they invented that as well.

Anyways if EverQuest Next turns into a success then Blizzard will take what made it a success as well as any other usable innovations that come along and improve it to draw everyone to their next game. Though I wonder if Titan might not be deemed failure trash no matter what because of expectations assuming it will be the next WoW.

Titan will release to market one month after EQN and history will repeat itself. Most likely in the month of November.

My guess is 2 or 3 years from now, all MMOs will have some form of destructibility.  Of course, every MMO wants to have better AI like SOE is proposing for EQ Next, so thats a no brainer.  Huge events similar to old "gm events" have something long needed in MMOs, so titan will most likely have events similar to EQ Nexts rallying calls.

I also think EQ Next will popularize the sandbox mmo.

Personally, I believe that, with EQ Next being designed for mass appeal rather than a niche crowd, they will find the game filled primarily with casuals and their numbers will taper off as soon as anyone else offers some of these innovative features in another game.  Simply put, I think someone else is going to do what WoW did to Everquest and immediately remake their game better than they could.  I think other games are going to come along in the next few years, maybe even before EQ Next is launched, and make niche or "hardcore" MMOs using many of EQ Next's ideas.  I also predict that these games will make more money in the long run and, though EQ Next will be remembered as the innovator and forerunner for new MMOs, Blizzard's Titan and other Eve-like niche games will be more popular than EQ Next itself, while profiting off SOE's ideas.

Wouldn't there need to be some actual originality for copying to even be possible?

Or does the whole copying thing only count with Blizz does it?

  • Storm_CloudStorm_Cloud Member UncommonPosts: 401

Blizzard should open their wallets WIDE open and hire Brad McQuaid and the team behind Vanguard, Saga of Heroes. Then mix it up with the WoW team and make Vanguard 2.

Vanguard was supposed to be Everquest 2 but it never happend. Now, Vanguard 2 will become the true "Everquest 3" if Blizzard gets behind it.

    No cartoony crap.

    No Zerg combat.

    No Action combat.

A progression that is confirmed to be working, be it SWG style (pre-NGE) or regular levelling progression.

    etc, etc

I think Blizzard listens and reads about what people really want, and delivers. Isn't this how you really make money, giving the majority of the people what they really want instead of (please, be patient with us, we THINK you will like this.) lol

Well, this is my opinion anyway. :)

Actually, that is technically correct.  After all, their biggest IPs, Warcraft and Starcraft, were "stolen" from Warhammer and Warhammer 40K respectively.

Well, maybe stole is too strong a word, but your sarcasm is not as off the mark as you think.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

Just what I was thinking and I don't mind if they do.

Blizzards recent games were a "new" Starcraft and a "new" Diablo... so it's turn to make a "new" Warcraft, and by "new" i meant very little improvements, since these games games are almost the same as their older counterparts graphically and gameplay wise also (if you are not acting like a blinded Blizzard fan you can see this), so their new game "Titan" is just a codename for WoW2, but we yet to see what differences going to be between this "new" WoW2 and "old" WoW.

So they didn't copy it, they predicted what it would be and copied that prediction.

So, how is that not their idea?

EDIT:  Someone edited out the word sarcasm,.

It is more if when, SOE can botch this up....

Currently my bet is that they are taking plenty from GW2 with some original stuff as well, maybe with some PvP stuff from LoL or DOTA as well.

Blizzard have indeed "borrowed" successful" features from other games but they usually wait until they seen the feature actually working and right now EQN is interesting and I am sure they keep their eyes on it but it might fail and I doubt Blizzard dare to chance that another company makes a huge success before it have happened.
