Not a full priced game, because of age?

burdock2burdock2 Member UncommonPosts: 420

Although I paid $150 for the PC Physical Collectors edition (inc postage), I notice the normal release of the game is not at a full prices game price point. Here in AUS, the normal PS3 version is selling for $49.99 and the PC is $39.99. I am assuming this is beacause the ACTUAL game was released in 2010, correct? A similar thing happened to the R Rated Mortal Kombat, here in AUS when it finally was released was only $29.99 on PS3.

Will they charge extra for full blown expansions? Like FFXI or will it all be free digital download?

Conspiracy theory: It's because there's no free month included with purchase of the game.

So you think the game should cost more?

    Pretty good comparison actually :P.

The game was remade basically but 1.0 has such a bad rep it would be hard to get people to buy it at $60. Honestly they probably came out ahead though because I know there people like me who bought it again because of the lower price just for early access.

before going further, Yoshida the director and developer of the game explicitly mentioned why they did that, he basically said that for an MMO box sales is not a target but the the retention of players within the MMO since the game is built on P2P model.

He actually wanted the game in itself to be free to download, but he can not because of other business issues with SE and Sony, so he tried to keep it as cheap as possible.

I actually find that admirable and appreciated.

Its probably a few reasons. Yeah its old but its being treated as a new release ... I think its just the development cost was much less than the usual. Sure, they redid a bunch of things from the ground up, but a lot of the art was reused. Not that the v1.0 disaster has nothing to do with it either ... im sure SE wouldve gladly charged full price regardless if it wasnt for the bad rep it already had.

My two cents, games make more money off subs then box sales in the long run. They think they have something here so a lower box price means more people buy the game and because they think the game is good, they will sub. They are going for volume. If they have something here its a smart play.

For subscription based games, I think it is a good idea to price the game at $30. I was much more likely to try it out at $30 than $60. They make most of their money off monthly sales. When I see $60, for original price of a subscription game, I feel like they need to get that initial lump sum because they think their game is crap and will lose most subscriptions after a couple weeks (talking to you SWTOR).

EDIT: just read ZenTaoYingYan reply. I like Yoshida's philosophies. I think it would have been great for it to be free to download and just pay for monthly subscription. It would get more people in the door. But I think $30 is not a bad start. Is it true that I don't even get a free month with that $30 I paid? That would kinda stink!

New customers get the 1 month, 1.0 gamers get 2 weeks.

I'd agree they're going for subs over box sales but I like that there is a price for the box. It helps keep the bottom feeders who want everything for free away.

It could also help keep the RMT scum to a minimum vs the flood you find in most F2P crapfests these days.

My only fear, which is selfish and has nothing to do with whether or not the game creates monster profits for SQEN, is that the game looks pretty much like yet another clone of the solo ez-mode speed leveling with not enough challenge or endgame variety, and that's a proven recipe for fail. Those games can't retain subs and end up turning into sick jokes of F2P trash.

I say selfish because I want an MMORPG that is grouping-heavy and that involves more challenge and less mindless ez-mode and that's worth playing for more than a few months.

Designing MMORPGs that are 95% solo ez mode with speed leveling and releasing with incomplete/minimal endgame hasn't worked yet. It's a great way to have players exhaust all content in 3 months or less. And unfortunately it looks like FFXIV is going with the same formula, so hopefully there's more to the game that hasn't been revealed yet that'll break the mold.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

in 3months except in 2 months we will have a big content update plus to be really good at end game you have to level multiple classes/jobs this isnt a 1 class game unlike these other mmos that people run out of content way to fast

You really dont know what you are talking about. They already have lots of end game content outside of all the classes/jobs you can level on one char to round out your skills. I already see myself having more things to do in this game, end game, then any MMO launched in the last 6 years. On top of that they have lots of plans they have talked about adding to the 8 and 24 man raids. Crystal Palace has lots of baddies they can add from all the FF games.

Let's not forget about new jobs they'll be adding, player housing, treasure maps, chocobo raising, hard-mode dungeons, Golden Saucer, and PvP Frontlines either. There is quite a variety of stuff to do.

Before i knew it was only $30 i asked what the game was like and such, thinking before i drop 60 bones on it, read what peeps wrote and it sounds like i'm going to like it, go to buy and am like WTF? only $30, if i'd know that i most likely would have not posted and took the gamble for $30.

I've always been of a mind that if a game requires a sub, then the box price should not be OTT, as the games income will be from the subs, im just glad that SE appear to have that in mind also.

but i bought mine last year when it only cost £10 image

    10, sweet! That’s not even a gamble.

    I find it funny with low prices at times like when steam is having sales and find myself saying things like;

“I dunno 2 bucks” you know really hemming and hawing

“7 bucks hhhhmmm???” Wondering if they’ll have an even lower drop tomorrow then I’ll feel cheated because I could have got it for 6 bucks, “hhhmmmm, should I, do I dare?”

Meanwhile I dropped 5 to 10 times more than that at lunch and didn’t even think twice, then here I am debating the chit out of 2 bucks like I’m about to drop a couple million; Seriously WTF? LOL
