This game has been in development far too long. I hope they're redoing the graphics engine cause the old one is already out of date.
And to allow the launch to go that deep into next year is a big mistake. There are some big mmorpg coming around that time or close to it.
Too bad its not coming out now as there isnt much else to choose from. D&L and Pirates, but thats about it for mmorpg.
I had high hopes for this game but I have a feeling its doomed to either vaporware or launching around the same time as Vanguard, Fallen Earth, Star Trek, Age of Conan, and a few others.

You should go over to the Official site and check out some of the recent screenshots. Fricking slick.
And I don't think Turbine is too worried about what else may be coming out at the time of release. LOTR has been popular as books for over 40 yrs, the movies upped that popularity. Desire to buy the game, and a stable fan base will still be there in another 10 months.

"Yeah Dood! I need a game where I can smack down Maximum Pwnage on Noobs!"
People with that mentality need to stick with Counterstrike.

I really like LOTR anything, and want to try this mmorpg, but after looking at that video from there site, doesnt seem that great
If this game is anything less than great, I wont even bother with it.
Anyone have an idea when it's due?
Really!
Are you talking 2nd Q of the Financial calendar which begins Oct 1, meaning we're in 1st Q now, or second Q of the usual calendar? Meaning Apr-Jun?
I would think last quarter of 2006 (Oct-Dec). Looking at the pace of development and the info we've been given to date, I would say Alpha would begin after the holidays. Give that 3 months, then a 4-6 week internal beta to nail down the network, then two external betas, one really small, and one larger open to those that register for it. Each Beta taking 2-3 months. So from Alpha to end of Beta maybe 10-11 months of testing and fine-tuning.
At least I hope so, I would rather sit through a year of testing, even if I don't get accepted to betas, and have a well tested game and thoroughly tested Network, than a slipshod chunk of code.

Don't rush a game out to the shelves. If you know anything about games/expansions being rushed out before the Devs are ready, then you'll see why it's a bad thing.
I preordered this game from EBGames in Dec of 2003 when it had a release of Feb 2004. I wonder if I will get a bonus?.............
To be honest, they sat on this game way to long and put out far to little information.
That should teach you to never place a pre-order with EB till the Official site has a release date posted. I've seen EB state a release date for so many games that was just simply false.
Again, take a look at the time-line of the game's development, and you'll see a common trend. The different developers just didn't have a superior enough of a vision for the Tolkien Estate to grant the License. Now that Turbine has obtained said License, they are moving forward at a very rapid pace. By your post, I'll assume you ahven't been to the official site lately. Go now, and see what has transpired lately. Not only has the amount of information increased within the last few months, but the level of involvement of the Dev's themselves on the Community forums has increased.

I dont care how long it takes......
After the utterly horrible experience and subsequent failure of turbines last attempt I hope for their sake they put a bit more thought and effort into this game. They need to score a win with LOTR which means appealing to the huge fanbase of the trilogy itself. LOTR online needs to be a vast immersive experience which draws the players in and makes them feel like a part of tolkiens amazing world.
If they can pull this off successfully and are able to grab up all the tolkien fans (as well as D&D fans with DDO) they could likely take over the fantasy MMORPG market. I believe that players are beginning to grow tired of WOW and now are either replaying it with new characters for lack of anything better to do or are spending all their time at the PVP battlegrounds. Most of us would welcome the opportunity to play games based on the literature and lore that inspired the RPG style in the first place.
Good Luck Turbine......our hopes and prayers lie with you.....
