Originally posted by Strayfe There are 2,763,149 games for casuals out there already, please don't turn this into yet another one. The more people like the OP who join, screech about not having the time to do anything and demand that content be dumbed down, the more likely they'll get their wish, and we'll have casual game #2,763,150. Please play one of the many, MANY available games for your playstyle.
I'd have to agree with Bad-Spock that casual =/= unskilled. Being able to play for 6-8+ hours per day doesn't make you super hardcore. It really just means you'll be able to move through the content quicker. Anyway, if you want a "hardcore" time sink game, Everquest is still around, as is DF:UW, EVE, and quite a few others.
The best games that I've played have been the ones that have something for both casual and "hardcore" players. I consider myself casual, but I enjoy "hardcore" sessions when I have the time - which doesn't happen that often anymore due to RL obligations. I think that games are made for entertainment and each person plays them in his or her own way. Having said that, I think it's also important to note that not all casual players want "casual games." I like "end game" content. In fact, anyone who actually sticks with a game long enough will eventually spend most of their time at "end game." My "casual" friends and I plan on clearing all the endgame in FFXIV, we're just not in a rush to get there.
As a side note:
A casual play style is just that - a casual attitude towards advancing through game content. It can be a skilled player with tons of MMO experience that just doesn't have the time to dedicate entire days to gaming anymore. I think of my friends that I used to raid with in high school and college. After we moved on and got jobs, spouses, kids etc., we just don't have the time to put in the hours that most consider "hardcore" anymore. This doesn't mean that we have any less skill. We have simply changed our play styles - and priorities.
While i do agree with you guys I also see the original point being made here as well. I too am afraid that this game will end up going the same route as WoW and Aion because people want to be able to advance using less time. The way to do that is the make the content easier as you see in the games i've already listed. I have no problem with the OP because he doesn't come across as someone who will say the game should be catered to his 1 hour play sessions. But not everyone is like him. We all have seen it in most mmos where the people who want to put less time into the game get the developers to cater to their playstyle. And i agree there are god knows how many games that already cater to those. I'm just hoping this game doesn't go that route and i think thats what he was trying to get at as well
Reading my original post trying to figure out where I said anything about wanting this game to be "easy". I can't seem to find it. I have to assume that some of the people who replied above are either Trolls or just Illiterate.
For the record, I do not like "easy" games and imagine I can probably play circles around many of those who responded as if that is what I said. Anyone who confuses being able to play tons of hours every day with "skill" probably doesn't have much of the latter.
I have pre-ordered this game based on the intelligent responses to this thread (and other information I have read); Thank you to those of you who replied with the understanding that the ability to invest massive chunks of time has nothing to do with player skill or capability.
Cheers, and hope to see some of you in the game.
I know i stated it already but no where in your original post did I get the impression you wanted the game to be more casual friendly. Some people are just afraid that with a lot of casuals(people who can't dedicate much time to the game) that the developers will make everything more casual(take less time). Playing tons of hours doesn't make anyone better than anyone else. Its just that a lot of people are starved for a game that they can put a ton of time into like the old days. Bouncing around mmos due to lack of longevity in the game itself really does suck.

No worries m8. I took your post as it was meant. I actually agree with you. On the one day per week when I can play a longer session I want content that I can really sink my teeth into. I quit WoW after TBC released because they made the raiding so easy (compared to Vanilla) that it bored me to tears.
Noraa, I will never understand people like you. WoW was announced as a casual MMO from the very beginning as in contrast to EQ2 which was released at the very same time. Problem was that so many self proclaimed hard-core players found WoW more fun and then startet a completely senseless war against the casual playerbase of this game. Moreover, Vanguard was for you - you could sink a lot of time with a big guild to build your own houses and ships. Why does not everybody play these games?
Finally, it does not matter. It never did. In the end there is only one important factor: Is it fun to play? Because, if it is fun, you do not care about the time you have to invest to get certain gear etc. - you just enjoy the game. By the way, this is the reason why they "casualized" MMOs by removing the time consuming grind. Because it was no fun at all to kill the same MOBs over and over and over again.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
