It's great news because it means that I won't have to rush in on launch day and reserve a character name. It's already reserved for me during the beta, and there's a good chance that they won't wipe everything and start over. Probably the most exciting news I've had in a long time.

I don't think the wipe is going to happen, either. However, I don't think that reserving a character name would be an issue, unless you want your character on the same server? I've created two characters with exactly the same name on two different severs, because I was testing something, and it wasn't an issue, the system did let me do that.
Still, it would be great to get my character back after beta because of the progress I've made.
Yeah I'm really happy with the character system in this game.
Getting to keep our names from beta is a huge bonus, but that also goes hand in hand with the multi-class feature. I know that I won't be spamming the login button once head start begins to make a stable of characters with all the names I usually try to grab in an MMO, because I only plan on playing 1 character. My guy is already made, and even though I'm having second thoughts about his hair, I know i can fix that later in the barber shop. If I end up liking another class or job more later on, I can switch without having to be stuck on a character whose name I like less, and so on.
Overall it reduces the new game anxiety a lot for me.
I was gonna go Moggle like the rest of the old FFXIVCore community, but it was full I started late, but I've make good friends on Cerberus already so I'm gonna stay there.
This makes keeping my original name more important and I'm glad I can
I mean yeah, it needs to happen, but since it won't happen then I guess that I'm celebrating early for my character name that I reserved. But truth is, I suppose that it wasn't fair to those who preordered got early access, only to find out that the real early access was the last open beta.
why would it excite you? do you use a very common name in games or somithng?
I'm just glad I managed to keep my progress more than my name. I mean a name is nice but knowing I won't have to make a new character is great.
I didn't think I'd end up on a legacy server as I never played 1.0 but somehow in the beta all the other servers were locked out on the Sunday morning UK time. So Ragnarok is where I'm at.
I'm not sure I'm following you? The open beta was not early access - if you're still getting early access, why is the preorder 'meaningless'?
They said a long time ago that p4 would not wipe - this was not a surprise they sprung on us recently.
Reserving a name isn't really a big deal when there's first and last names, unless you're going for a name that's "clever" and might be taken by another dood before you or you're ripping off a name from some other source. Since last names aren't that common in MMORPGs I'd imagine most vets don't have too many pet first + last combos.
I actually don't like being forced to have a surname when all of my favorite (and original) character names are one word and slapping a random last name on kind of diminishes them to me.
I originally planned on making a few characters and reserving my favorite names but there's less need for alts than ever in this game, surnames make it impossible for anybody to take "my" names, and the intro and noobie content is so dreadful that I had zero desire to make any alts.
My main takeaway from keeping my character is that I won't have to repeat the dreadful intro sequences or noobie quests.
I also unlocked all classes and did all of the repetitive city quests in all 3 cities and would rather not have to repeat all of that.
