Online gaming burn out

ch0sen0nech0sen0ne Member UncommonPosts: 87

For the last decade I've done nothing but play online games, mostly MMO's and FPS. When playing these types of games I usually stick to them for several months at a time. Meanwhile I've been missing out on a lot of really good single-player games.

When playing an online game you mostly repeat the same experiences daily, instead when playing many single-player games you will always be seeing something new and fresh.

I've wasted a lot of time playing online games and now have a whole library games to catch up on.

Got my PS4 on pre-order, now to beat as many games as possible before it comes out. :X

Agreed. That is why i do NOT only play online/MMO games.

In fact, i would also advice game hop more. Most online games last for quite a while (for example STO, which i play, lasted for years by now). You can always play a bit, stop, and come back later when there is new stuff.

It's a shame that you missed the Steam Summer Sale; I picked up a ton of older games for next to nothing.

As for the PS4, I'm very "meh" about it thus far. I'll wait a year or so for the game library to flesh out and the price to come down; most of my gamer friends seem to feel the same way about it.

I'm more than happy playing games on the PC and waiting a few months after launch before buying them at a reduced rate.

I picked up a couple of games to see what I've been missing ... and had a less positive experience.  One of them was practically unplayable, repeatedly crashing because of conflicts with my video card that that the publisher had never bothered to fix.  Spending a day troubleshooting and trying different drivers was a bit nostalgic, but not really in a fun way.    The other game was a lot of fun, but painfully shallow.  I finished it in a day and didn't leave me with that warm-and-fuzzy "I've accomplished something" illusion that persistant MMO databases provide.  I was going to get more, but after those two experiences, my enthusiasm for the adventure had passed.

( that said, I am still glad I tried it - it's usually a good idea to check if the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence from time to time )

I honestly enjoy these types of games for the exact reason you seem to be burning out on.  If the game is fun, I don't mind playing it over and over.  Just like someone who enjoys baseball or tennis, they end up doing the same thing over and over, the game never really changes, but it's fun to play.

That said, I also enjoy the kind of game you're talking about.  Maybe a narrative driven or puzzle game, the kind of game that really isn't build to have replayability.  Figuring out a puzzle is fun the first time, but knowing how to do it makes repeating it less fun, or no fun at all. And many stories are best the first time you experience them.

Though I do caution you in regards to "missing" so many other games because you've been busy with online games.  Our market is huge now, even if you distance yourself from games that have hundreds of hours of replayability you'll still never play every good game.  Win the lottery, retire tomorrow and just play games, you'll still miss out on some of the gems out there.  It's a good thing, we have too many good games.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

If everything is boring, you probably have something wrong with you upstairs and need professional help.

I have been playing sp games for awhile now, and it's fun. I will hop into mmo's from time to time, but I really like the feeling of playing how I want when I want and well good communities are a needle in a hay stack nowadays. If I can make a suggestion look into the Witcher series, it is amazing, mature, and Witcher 3 is coming out next year and I am pretty impressed with how it is looking so far.

I might play FFxiv after the first month is over, I think it will be fun for awhile, until I hit the hamster wheel. That's the best thing about sp games really, you can have closure.

There are also many great SP indie games. I just finished "gone home" last night. Only a 3 hour 1st person adventure. It has zero combat, and almost no puzzle and no challenge. But it was a great experience. Best character drama, and story writing, i have seen in a game.

Much more fun than most MMOs.

Well being a pirate with a PC, PS3, PSP and DSi XL I got a lot of great games to choose from :X

Right now I'm playing Tales of Xillia and Saints Row IV.

Tales is a nice change of pace for an RPG, actually watch the story rather than just skipping it like in MMO's.

I get to play on my own time and don't feel the need to be constantly grinding to level up, I'm pretty hardcore when it comes to MMO's.

Saints Row is awesome, I'm glad I'm not stuck playing FFXIV right now. Having a blast causing all sorts of mayhem!

Or better yet just play in moderation.  I usually only play for an hour or two at a time before logging off and doing something else.  Too many gamers are over-competitive addicts that get sucked in for 6+ hours a day.  There are too many other fun hobbies out there for me to get stuck just on gaming, so burnout has never been a problem.

    Yeah .. i totally agree.

I use to raid. Too much work. Too much commitment. I would much rather solo because if my wife yell "dinner", i am out of the game. I consider a proper dinner with the family WAY more important than a video game.

While i am burnt out on modern MMO's I still find that I enjoy my 2 or 3 hours a day of DAOC after all these years, so at least I know it's not me, but rather the direction the market took games which is away from my preferences.

But there's always hope that someone will eventually take us in new directions more to my liking, so I remain hopeful on some of the new titles I see on the horizon.

That's the problem, nobody understands moderation.  There are so many people on these forums alone who wouldn't know what to do with themselves if their electronic gaming devices broke down, they'd go crazy.  There are far too many people who are so fanatically focused on one and only one thing and can't bring themselves to care about anything else.  Personally, I haven't played an MMO in over a year.  I don't miss it either.  There just aren't any  games I want to play.  So what?  I'll go weeks or months without playing *ANY* video games.  Big deal.  I have tons of other interests.  I'm never burnt out on gaming because I never do enough of it to matter.  It's fun when I do it, when I don't, I'm not addicted to it so it doesn't make a difference.

Yeah .. from the way they talk here, some people seem like they want to live in a MMO for years!!!

Personally i wouldn't "live" in a video game at all.

I don't know why so many gamers get hung up on genre labels. I just like good games. I like a good SP RPG, but not because I enjoy inventory management and stats. I enjoy getting into the role of a character in a believable 'other reality', but I can do that in a game like Mirror's Edge as much as in a traditional RPG. Just enjoy playing games - play as you like to play, and let others do the same.

We're on an MMO discussion site and the OP is simply stating he's looking for new games, he doesn't want to be preached at to moderate himself or to stop playing games (especially on an mmo forum). If he wants to thats his choice, but every gamer is told how nerdy or stupid gaming is all their life, to hear it on a gaming forum is just so much worse and unnecessary.

Unfortunately, there are people who want to live vicariously through video games because their real lives are crap.  Rather than spending time and effort making their rel lives better, they'd rather pretend in a game.

    It's sad, really.

I doubt this is his first day on the internet. If one cannot stay in the heat, get out of the kitchen. It would be a miracle if no one shows up to preach.

Well, i am not judgmental about how someone else wants to live their lives. And so i speak for myself .. i wouldn't want to live video games.

I suppose you are also in the camp of moderates where games is just a nice entertaining hobby, but no more.

Nobody is saying gaming is nerdy or stupid, but if that's all you do, if that's all you want to do, if  you have no balance in your life, it doesn't matter if it's gaming or anything else, it's unhealthy.

Same unfortunately, I'm playing Asheron's Call as of right now, but i'm looking forward to TESO and Archeage! TESO has only grabbed me with all it's themeparkness because Im a diehard TES fan lol. But It should be really fun exploring and playing the entire Elder Scrolls world. Archeage just looks all-in-all promising, kind of reminds me of SWG with the housing, crafting, pvp, and general freedom.
