Having just played open beta which classes are supposed to be the easiest? Meaning that in a group you are not relied on as much but are still useful that someone would want you in there party? thanks guys..
Lancer is the easiest damage dealer IMO. No complicated rotations (like Pugilist) and no MP management. You just have to position yourself right is all.
As others have said, it's a 'trinity' game so the most pressure is going to be on the tanks and healers just like all trinity games. If you want to make sure you have the least amount of things to worry about or people depending on you then yeah, you want to play as a DPS class. The downside is that like most trinity games, the queues for dungeons take longer for DPS then for tanks or healers. It's the trade off you make.
Any type of DD class would be good. I would suggest that going SUM would be the most forgiving since your pet will help you a great deal and do half of your job for you. If you want something a little more challenging go BLM. The two jobs of DRG and MNK rely on being in proper positioning and doing the right combos to be fully optimal DPS wise. I would avoid going BRD if you are afraid of messing up, in longer fights you will relied upon for your songs for support.
I would say archer is the easiest at this point. With archer you can kite early game and it deals pretty good damage. Lancer and pugilist are also fine choices. I would avoid arcanist if you are looking for something simple. It's not so much difficult as it is tedious at early levels, although it does have a heal.
Sorry I mean no disrespect but why do people play mmorpgs like this? Same goes for those that play asking about:
Combat Style
Art Style
Best solo class
Most invited class
Numerous visual options
Control schemes
Endgame content
UI customization
Zoning/Instances
And various other 4th wall questions. It just seems like you asking us to find a class/job where you are needed, but not to the point of being too responsible for group success/failure. I remember when players use to focus on things likes can I:
Play a paladin-like character
Dual wield
Fish
Tame
Own a house
Design a guild insignia
Get drunk
Invade a opposing faction's city
Ride boats/ships
Be evil (based on a moral system)
Wear robes over armor
Climb a mountain in the distance
Get lost
You know, a time when players looked for immersion and depth, not effectiveness, min/maxing and excuses why they should play.
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
Archer/Bard probably the easiest, just sit back and shoot away, no combos or positions to worry about.
Next probably Lancer/Dragoon only has to worry about position and a simple combo.
Thaumaturge/Black Mage has 2 buffs to rotate, and dots to keep up for procs.
Arcanist/Summoner has a pet and dots to manage.
I would probably avoid Pugilist/Monk, it has 2 buffs and 2 dots to manage. Also has several complex combos that can only be used in certain forms and has to position itself correctly.
Archer would be my pick. The class allows you to hang back and has a stun ability giving yourself time to heal should you find yourself being overwhelmed in a solo boss fight. Also its Job the Bard requires Conjurer which gives you access to healing abilities, though I feel every person should level up conjurer at least a little.
Archer or Arcanist would easily give you the most survivability without having to be relied upon. Warning though unless questing Arcanist is slow as hell to level I only made it to around level 5 or 6 before I said screw this but people who were maining as an Arcanist said it wasn't that bad due to all the questing exp.
Also as an Arcanist they have their own healing ability so you wouldn't be required to level up Conjuration at all if you don't feel like it though having protect is quite handy.
lol I understand some of your frustrations. I just wanted an easy class to get my feet wet then can change when I feel more comfortable and understand what each class does.

Hey, to be honest with you, I cant see anything disrespectful about that.
But also, alot of people just lack confidence about their party preformence and look for an easy character to play for a while, the reason people ask for solo in most MMOs is not so they can just play alone, but think about how easy it is to communicate with freinds that play the same MMO. now compare that to 3 or 4 friends playing Skyrim.... On PC, PS3 and 360.... pretty bloody hard now to chat, and you cant go "Hey guys, theres a big F!@# off dragon over me, can you guys give me a hand" in skyrim
But I'm with you on the RP side of it, getting lost, getting drunk, getting lost while drunk, owning a house, losing the house because youre drunk.
Both sides are valid, but it is difficult to tell the 1P to the MMO soloers.

OK, this is my first time inside the FF universe in an MMO sense, and instead of being all wary. i dove right in and said "Screw it, I am going to make a character that represents me"
So I made a gladiator. Then found out they are tanks in Duties.
But why ask? why not just do the same?
Create you to the best of your abilities. At lvl 10 you can unlock every other class.
The Duty Finder is also very forgiving, and a great place to practice your stance in the groups, very easy.
And as in all MMOs with the Trinity. Dps is always the easiest to get away with being slack. So any of them, and if you're worried about getting too close and getting hit, choose an Archer or one of the Disciples of Magic.
And if none of that pans out, crafting is addictive as HELL.

Yeah, but that's the beauty of finding a mmorpg you want to play, rather than playing one despite your shortcomings. When I first played FFXI (a heavily grouped focused mmo) I wanted to play a monk. I didn't worry about group usefulness, learning curbs or invite frequency. All I knew is I wanted to be an Elvaan monk named Tyberious. And trust me, Japanese players had no use for a monk unless they were fighting undead. So I created a linkshell of NA players and we played together. And when I couldn't play my main job, I switched to another just to keep myself busy when no one was on.
Point is, you should play to how you feel and not pigeon hole yourself into a job/class that may not be suited to your strengths. All you'll do is fall short of being mediocre in a class/job someone else picked for you rather than excelling when you find a class/job fit that you picked yourself.
By the way, I became a damn good MNK/WHM who hung out near undead and was frequently invited to groups...
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
Plenty of valid reasons to ask this question, most of them social - no one wants to disappoint a bunch of groups because they don't have a complete handle on the game mechanics yet. It's not like you are locked into your class in this game or that any particular one would be a huge time investment.
Personally, even though I play healers more than anything now, when I'm going for dps or tanking, I like to look for classes that can be effective at their role with simple rotations/priority lists, because
1) I expect my fun in combat to come from situational factors of the encounter, which I can pay more attention to if I'm not tunnel-visioning my hotbar, and
2) because I want to ensure that I'm always serving my role well enough (even on my off days), even if I'm not going to get a reputation for being the best X on the server, because I'm there to help my buddies, guildmates, and other people I play with consistently above all else.
That said, to the OP, Archer and Lancer are your best bets. Archer has probably the simplest 'rotation' out of all the dps classes, and it grows into the Bard job, which will be a sought after support/dps hybrid that is still easy to play but useful to any group. Lancers are also pretty straightforward and have probably the least group-play responsibilities (you'll have to sometimes stun and slow enemies), though they have some basic positional requirements to worry about. Lancers grow into Dragoons, who don't really get any new level of complexity or group responsibility, just more helpful tools to make your life easier. It's worth noting that Lancers are going to be much more popular than Archers, from what the polls say, so keep that in mind.
Unlike some in this thread, I would not recommend either Pugilist, Summoner, or Thaumaturge to someone like yourself. Pugilists start out simple but get to be one of the most hectic to play classes in the game, Thaumaturge requires some special finesse that only comes with experience really, even though their rotation is simple enough, and Summoner requires you to micromanage a pet as well as keep track of several DoT spell timers, which can be tricky. Archer or Lancer are the way to go.
@OP - don't listen to these people say DPS. The easiest class is the healer. Then the tank after that.
As a healer you will be loved for your sweet magic healing. You will cast, they will love. You get to decide who lives, who dies and when. As a healer you are the lease noticed class in a group. Like electricity, no one misses you till the lights go out... then they shout your name over and over. O' healer, where art thou? Let them holler... yes let them holler, then they know your name.
As a tank you will also have one of the easiest jobs in the group. DPS will always pull for you and all you have to do is stand there and look pretty, shout a few times and perhaps raise a shield on occasion. As a tank you can go AFK as often as you like, and the group with stay and wait on you. They will love you for it. Praise the tank. Praise.
I joke of course. Both the healer and the tank are always in demand. It takes a special person to heal on a regular basis. It is a thankless job most of the time - but it is crucial to any real group. Same for tanks, they get a bit more lime light than the healer... but you won't get to see your name in the DPS highlights/ladders and combat logs, but no group can go it without your meaty self.
I think the easiest class to play will probably be the Archer/Bard for FFXIV. It should be about as straight forward as it gets. Some say Dragoon - but that will put you having to move a lot and potential screw ups on tougher dungeons. Go as a Bard.. play the MP battery song and shoot arrows from behind the heals.
Speaking strictly for the first 20 levels, it's far and away Arcanist. You get good damage, the best tanking ability (through Topaz Carbuncle - which tanks better than any level 20 melee), and good heals. You'll fit into every party due to sheer versatility.
Now, it will take some practice to get mechanics down properly. If you want to Carbuncle tank a dungeon you have to be deft with your control and skill timing. However, it's totally doable and it makes the game very easy. There's a lot skills with arcanist compared to other classes.
Flipping this around, the easiest to play are probably melee. Really straight forward stuff, most complex thing is positioning as some skills gain a bonus when you hit from behind (as an example). However, it's no where near as outright powerful as arcanist.
Furthermore, the most demanded class (for most people unaware of what Arcanists could do) was a tank. This is probably because they aren't needed at all in the beginning. If you want to be a savvy player and look forward I'd consider this, you'll be a hot commodity by mid game if this trend holds.
Now, most of this is due to weird scaling. A level 20 Topaz Carbuncle has ~750 hp - which is a TON more than anyone else. The defense is less, but the aggro is so huge that you can spam heal it while your party fires away at safe distance. I've confirmed that it works through Copperbell Mines, all bosses (except slime which you don't want to tank). I'm sure roles will become more defined as we get advanced classes. Don't expect Carbuncle to out tank a melee forever, or really for that much longer past 20.
Thaumaturge. Unlike other dds youre not worried about positioning or combos. Only have to switch from fire to ice to maintain mp. Also theres no worries about pacing TP consumption. Lastly there should be very little worry about avoiding the red stuff because of your back line position.
Unlike archer, when you decide to take your class to into a job, BLM plays almost identical to THM. Bard is more complex than Archer because once again you need to work with positioning for songs and understand party needs for which songs to play. You also lose 20% of your damage when certain songs are in effect.

True, Archer does evolve into a Bard which has some support functions at endgame, but it will be a good way to get your feet wet and learn the game.
Good luck, and have fun!

Arcanist is comically powerful atm at just ordinary solo play, there's little reason not to be one.
Neat thing is, if/when it's nerfed...it doesn't really matter, not like you wont want to level all the classes anyway.
