Didn't Tera have an item for subscription time like this and it didn't work out either?
I understand that FF14 has a sub since the Japanese are proud and would consider a f2p version something dishonorable.
But NCSoft never had anything other in mind than profit, so I don't understand this decision for a payment model which seems to have its origin in a vivid dream of Scrooge Duck.
Actually Tera's system worked out just fine for me. I bought the game at half price and never gave the company my credit card. They had those events where you could get the eggs and a number of the things from the eggs were worth quite a bit. It was certainly worth enough to get the first chronoscroll and by the time I reached a high level I didnt worry about it anymore -- it was easy to buy one per month and not pay. So essentially I paid like $20 for the game if I remember right then nothing for subs. That was priced right for tera.
I have more of an issue with the $60 to start. I would rather it be somewhat lower as that is a lot to lay down on something you might not have a lasting interest in. For those people complaining about the monthly fee, it would take you 5 months (4 months at 15 plus the free month) to hit the same investment as the initial. How many MMO's have you played more than 5 months in?
im dissapointed of the choosen bussniess model i feel the entire gamem will be based around gold and creed....from the start wich its pretty bad imo from certain pov u can really say the game can be a b2p but for me not a fan of grinding and do over the top repetitive tasks like farm gold or something will pbly be annoyed if i MUST farm gold to keep up with the game economy(wich im sure it will suffer of high prices on gear because of the option to sell Creed certificates) and tbh i like the fact they will still have to polish the game but spring 2014 sounds kinda too late imo i was hoping for a nov-dec release and not sure if i will wait for the game

When EverQuest was being beta tested they tested the crap outta that game! There was no idle "Open Beta" weekends. You got to test THE game. And look at its longevity.
Well..if you read the more recent news on the state of beta, you'd see WildStar was/is actually being tested instead of advertised like open beta nonsense.

CREDD to gold or gold to CREDD. The only thing you can buy, atm, with CREDD is subscription time or gold. Nothing else has been released to prove different that I know of. Will edit this if I found that to not be the case.
I welcome the sub model tbh, fed up of being nickel and dimed with f2p crap like swtor and neverwinter.
Also can't understand why people moan about 15 dollars a month, minimum wage has gone up alot since wow launched with this price, in all fairness if they added on inflation subs should of been vastly more per month
I love this proposed payment model because I personally do not believe there is some paradigm shift to F2P because P2P is outdated, games like WoW and EvE are doing just fine. I feel the reason for this false positive of F2P = better than P2P, is because we have been inundated with nothing but a string of mediocre games at best in the past few years. Which has caused game ADD to the point where nothing is interesting enough to stick with...its all just another clone trying to chase WoWs success. So no, the market has not moved on from P2P games because its an archaic model. The market has started moving on because of a long line of crappy games that could survive no other way.
Sure there will always be people who want something for nothing or somehow feel $15 a month on an activity they will spend 16hrs on a month is somehow too expensive/justifiable (even though its less than a single 2hr movie for a couple) or people who genuinely think F2P/B2P with cash shop is actually cheaper (it may be for a small few). But in the end developers will get their money and it has been shown that switching mediocre games to B2P/F2P makes them much more than they could P2P and it makes it much faster. So yes, for a few its a good deal, they do not mind limited content or grinding instead of paying or even the ones who could care less what their character looks like and never buy cosmetics, and those people will save. However, the rest of us just get a mediocre game that companies make much more with because of their cash shops.
I know for me, when I averaged out what I had to spend on bags and other items in a game I really enjoyed (GW2), I might as well have paid a subscription and just got that stuff included. For me GW2 followed a formula that made it fun so you bought what you needed, but shallow enough for me to lose interest, which allowed AN to make just as much off me as a P2P. I think a P2P can do wonderful in this market, but it needs to get over this slump of mediocrity we have been bombarded with. If it cannot do this, it might as well go F2P, but only because its really not worth our time or money....I like their model and hope the game lives up to it. Obviously this is just my opinion and others opinions will vary depending on what they are looking for in an MMO....I am just personally tired of all the garbage that has come out these last 6 years....
In today's economy I wouldn't mind paying a subscription if I knew the game was going to be worth it. But that's the kicker, no one ever knows for sure. Staying with the older subscription rates I think is illogical. $15 per month with longer subscriptions being cheaper was good back in the heyday, but I think that time has passed for most. Too many good quality F2P MMOs releasing that compete & win people over to then spend their $. I had enjoyed & was enthusiastic about this game till reading this. It had a slightly left of center vibe going for it along with some seemingly fun play. Now, knowing that I'd probably have to pay subscription to get most of the quality out of it I probably wont even purchase just to try. I hope it succeeds because of it's style, but it's business model just had me place my wallet back in my pocket.
I like the announcement of the subscription model and looking forward to multiboxing (playing several accounts at the same time). I'm very happy to see the company has a fair pricing model for a game that will deliver to become the best MMORPG the genre has seen in years. More than likely I will pay for a year for 20 accounts if the company allows multiboxing and has features in the game which will give the company more subscribers.
While comparison to other MMORPGs will always be made, this one stands alone in my mind as the best of them all and the one that I'm most looking forward to playing. All of the MMORPGs that don't have a subscription are like that for a reason. In my opinion, none of the MMORPGs which don't offer a subscription are worthy of my attention.
Prepared,
the 52 account multiboxer of World of Warcraft playing currently on the Darkspear server.
Drawing and maintaining a player base is less about business model and much more about the quality of the game. If they can offer a top notch game that is better than most, then they won't suffer one bit by being primarily subscription. I prefer a sub model, it's cheaper in the long run and it filters many of the undesirables that infest free to play games. I'm especially happy since many of the complainers on this topic are people I wouldn't want to see in the game in the first place. Granted, I'm more inclined to play FFXIV at this point, but at least I have another viable option in a genre that is over-saturated with f2p games.
I've played my fair share of F2P and P2P games to know that either way; I'm spending 15$ in a month playing their game (probably) because... I want cool stuff now.
The thing is... there are a lot of gamers like me.
Gamers who like to throw a little money at a game once in a while... To support the game (and look sweet ;D)
Either way, we're going to try the new game that comes out, and if this game is "ALL THAT" it may stay P2P if all the "financially able" gamers stick.
A lot of people who are moaning about the P2P model probably can't afford it.. or can't get a credit card.. or maybe they are just too damn stubborn to give it a shot.
If I'm having fun, I will gladly pay for the game. Heck, I may even buy an account for my buddy for 1 month just to suck him in. We can afford it, we'll gladly pay as long as you get that craving for the game. The getting home from work and all I can think about is when I'm going to log on and play.
Something I honestly haven't felt in a very long time. Not in an MMO anyways.

You are missing the point this is not about be cheap and wanting something for nothing. This is about exactly what you mention, for many MMO's over the past few years have been mediocre so laying out $60/£45 is too much to then be presented with a mediocre WOW in space game that Wildstar seems to be on the surface (it may not be like that though). Also history has told us that MMO's struggle staying p2p for very long and with the competition be mainly free you have to ask yourself do I pay $60/£45 and see the game go f2p or wait for the conversion? F2p is more about trying the game first and if you like it then you have the option to spend which to me is better than laying out the dough only to find you don't like the game.
For those saying we are all cheap and want something for nothing, this is not the case at all as many want to game to succeed but Wildstar could be another bait and switch so waiting is sensible for us consumers and bad for Carbine. This is not Final Fantasy, The Elder Scroll or Everquest its a new ip it doesn't have a ready made fanbase to draw that initial income. I'd be surprised if anyone's heard of Wildstar outside the MMO community, this could be another The Secret World.

If you really read my post you will see that I do get it. Although there are some wanting a handout and those who think F2P is actually cheaper (for a select few it is, but for most its not). I think the vast majority do not want/like a subscription model because we have had nothing but a string of crappy games over the last few years. This in turn makes people not want to take a risk on a new MMO, after all they have been trained now that its going to suck and go FTP because of this.
As far as history, I do not agree on the fact that history shows games under a subscription model struggle. I feel that what history shows us is that crappy games that come out with a sub find it pretty much impossible to sustain a P2P model. This has everything to do with the game being crap and nothing to do with the payment model. Also history shows us that iconic IPs are usually the worst offenders at phoning in a mediocre title.
I can understand your logic about FTP being a trial that gives you the option to spend money, but again I can only partially agree. Although yes it can be seen as a free trial (so can actual free trials and open beta), history has shown that it in actuality creates mediocre titles that keep you interested just enough to spend some money before you leave from boredom. Companies would not be going FTP if they could not make fast cash and more of it.
I personally prefer not buying bag space with cash. I like everything included in my MMOs. If a company is not going for a cash grab, good games can survive just fine with a subscription. So my theory stands, if WildStar is a GOOD game, it will do fine. If Wildstar is just another crappy clone in space, like I said before, it will fail. It will go free to play. That does not mean it should have been FTP because subscriptions are bad. It means that it was a crappy game and no one was going to pay enough to keep it afloat. If your worried about it, do not buy it at launch. I personally always wait a month or two. But in all honesty, paying a monthly fee that is less than my wife and I going to a movie once a month is of no concern.
.....Also GW2 might be one of the best FTP/BTP options out there today. I bought into it, loved it, bought bags and what not, and stopped playing after a couple of months. It was a good game but it was mediocre on depth.. I lost interest and ArenaNet made just as much off me as a P2P game would have....cheaper, free trial...its an illusion...
Edit: for the poster above me you are comparing what you know about a released game that is just undergoing some minor changes to bring it to a new market to a game that is not set to release till spring of next year...of course you know less...
If a game any game turns out to be to my liking I will deal with it's revenue model although I personally favor subs or btp. Console players always have to pay $59.99 for a new game unless they get it used or wait 6 months for the price to drop so I don't see this as being any different. I'm sure after 3-6 months you'll be able to buy the box for half of the original price unless this game turns out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
So if you buy the box and sub for 3 months how is it that any different or much more horrible than most console games where you buy the box and then they sell you dlc for $15 a pop and you get bored with the game within 3 months or less anyway?
I also still cant' believe that any adult who is not on welfare or something is going to freak out about $15 a month. If that is going to break your bank how do you pay for your internet connection or electric bill for that matter? You can debate if the game "is worth it" but that is totally in the eyes of the beholder. In the end if you don't like don't play it I know that's what I do.
Im very comfortable financially and £15 a month is a drop in the ocean, but that doesn't mean I'm a mug and am going to pay to much for something-180 + box for something that is not pushing boundaries or offers something outstanding and fresh.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
I said it in the TESO thread with item shop shit. Most of the casual flock play free to play or buy to play mmo's. The time where you sell multi million boxes at launch are over. There are many good mmo's out there that are on par with the best of the best.
I rather pay a sub after playing a few free to play mmo's, but with such a competitive market and everything going free to play i dont have my hopes to high. No idea what earnings they need to make to break even for investment. But you can bet that 2014 many gamers are buying lots of games and mmo's might get drowned for a couple of months.
PS4 + Xbox1 + many many games including a few mmo launches :P
Disappointing news indeed. I guess now that WoW is haemorrhaging customers imminent MMOs are all vying to fill the gap. Problem of course is most of us can't sub to them all so there will likely be no winner out of this and they will all lose out. B2P is the only viable model as GW2 has proven. I was looking forward to this one as I felt it would make a good casual game to add to existing MMOs I play. I'll wait.

Lifetime subscription would be nice.
tyrecies
I've never understood why companies don't allow a person to buy subscription in time blocks, 20 cents an hour or some such.
Still, won't be playing any games which require subscription, it's dead money.
You mean B2P is the only viable payment model, if you were to play the game.
Some of us like to sub.
