Help me understand the gear please :)

LhexLhex Member UncommonPosts: 262

I started to find that managing gear was becoming confusing. If anyone can clear up a few questions.

  1. No tooltips on gear? I would have to manually unequip and re-equip gear while my char sheet was open to see if the item improved my stats or not. Is there something I am missing? Do I have tooltips disabled somewhere? Is it understandable in FF series that certain armor types are just better than others? Like linen not as good as cotton which is not as good has hemp or something?
  2. The red X on some gear. I assume that just means I can't wear it. But being a cloth armor wearer and it being a cloth type and was a quest reward - wouldn't you think I could wear it? Am I just low level? Again no tooltip to tell me otherwise. Is there something I am overlooking? It was becoming frustrating to accept gear as a quest reward only to see the RED X. Anyway to know if you can wear a quest reward or not?
  3. Item sets. I remember a help box popping up telling me I got a set item. But I don't remember seeing a set name, 1/3 or any set bonuses once you complete the set. Now with all my gear collected I don't even remember what item was a set item.
  4. Battlegear. On the NPC again there was no way to tell what gear would be an improvement to my character and no way to tell if I could even wear it.

Any help appreciated!

Armor Management in this game is still a work in progress, keep that in mind.

On top of that fact, you will have to read very carefully when you are going through your armor. You have a mixture of things which are not exactly like other MMOs, mainly because so much armor can be reused by many of your classes without having to repurchase the same gear over and over. One piece of armor can be linked to all of your Gear Sets, yet there is no clear way to easily identify this.

At present you will have to just utilize the space given to you in your Armory as a way to help visual manage your sets. it is best not to stuff your armory full of gear but rather unload periodically into your Retainers; sell the access gear you won't be using on the Market Boards; and focus on having either key sets or one universal theme while you are leveling.

For instance: I'm just going to level Diciples of War, so therefore I only need DoW gear in my armory and all of my Magic gear can be unloaded onto the Retainer for the time being.

Gear becomes easier to maintain the high level you get. Mainly of your gearsets start to become color coded and have very unique looks which late game. This makes them easier to arrange and organize. Early in the game most stuff is bland, brown, and looks the same -- which leads to some confusion!

Stat Comparisons will be better implemented in time says our developers. They originally did not design the game to have side-by-side state comparison for gear, yet the high demand of the Beta Testers have gotten them working on the features as we speak.

Will it be ready by launch? I dunno. We'll see.

    1. If you pause your mouse over the gear a tooltip should popup, I'm not sure why it wouldn't be working for you, there unfortunately is no "comparison" tooltip that shows what you're hovering over compared to what you currently have equipped. I just usually go by the armor amount if it says like 10(+1) in green then it probably is an upgrade.

    2. There will be an X if you can't equipped it. Which could be a level thing or wrong class. It says what level and what classes can use it on the tooltip. Some also may say Disciple of War. Which means any DoW can use it.

    3. For sets they should be named similarly. Like the all the pieces of the ~level 15 leather set from dungeons are called Foestriker's Tabard, Foestriker's Skirt, etc.. I can't recall if it showed bonuses on the tooltip.

    4. Again the tooltip shows all the required information. You just hover your mouse over the item.

Thanks to both your posts! This will help come early access :)

My tooltip hover delay must not of worked or is on a really long delay because for the life of me it never popped up. Maybe it will be adjustable in the system options.

ad 2. there are actually 2 "crosses" - red X mean that item is not usable by your current class, green X means it is for your class, but you are too low level for it.

Additionally to all that has been said, if there is a double C in front of the name of the item you are looking at, that is a higher quality version of the base armor, and has better stats. So you and me can be wearing the exact piece of armor, but if mine is a double C item, it has overall better stats. Early on, this will not mean much, but at the higher levels, the high-quality items will dominate since these will most likely be BIS until the Gods open up for farming.

Equipment that's needs to be repaired also appears with a red X, remember to check if it is broken.

I heard very interesting thing during OB about shields. There is a difference between small shield and big shield (GLD class)! Small one has greater chance to block than big but has less amount of damage to block. Nice, isn't it? I never saw feature like that before!

If this is true, then that is awesome! I love small details like that.

Yes, but the classes that use the bigger shields, particularly the Paladin, has a skill that adds a 50% straight chance to block to whatever you have... so Pick up a huge shield, with an innate 35% chance to block, and you now have the protection power of a big shield, and the higher chance to block of a small shield.

Overall, Shields were made really well in this game, and I can't wait to tank for my friends.

I myself prefer double d over double c to each their own. :P

This game lacks the typical item compare tooltips you see in every RPG/MMORPG for the last decade or so.

The existing tooltip (for the item you're hovering over only) only shows you differences in armor/resist if it's not equipped item, not differences in anything that actually matters like stats.  It's pretty sad.

The gear manager thing is nice but is very simplistic for a system where you can have 19 total classes with a huge variety of gear types and classes at lots of different levels.

No clue why the tooltips are so pitiful - I don't see how showing clear info "stresses" players.

I'd imagine they kept the gear manager simple avoid "stressing' anybody...but to me having to hover over every single piece of gear I own every time I level any of my many classes to try to find upgrades is not that pleasant.

They could at least give gear from the different orders a different colored border so you could at least somewhat cut down on having to hover every last item.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

also big tip for if/when you choose a second class to lvl(I know thats the wrong term but work with me here!) If your second class or future ones are different or hell the same.. SAVE YOU OLD GEAR!!! also if you have say a lvl 9 pants but have another option for lvl 9 pants.. choose the other armor type and save that for you other claas.. hope that makes a little sense but this helped me a TON in better when I started lvling conjurer after archer(on the same toon)

    1.  Typically if the defense/resist is higher for the same type (cloth, leather, mail, plate) of gear that you're wearing, it'll be better.  This isn't always the case as once you reach level 10, the quest rewards start handing out armor with a little better defense, but it will have different secondary stats.  (crit, acc, determination, skill/spell speed)  It may not mean much in the grand scheme of things when it's only adding +1, but it's still worth noting.

    2.  Red X means you don't have a class leveled high enough to equip the gear.  Green X means you have a class high enough to wear it but you're currently not on that class.  (there was also the case for 1.0 chars that they had a red X on all grand company gear since you're unaligned when you start the game)

    3.  That popup was actually probably for a unique or untradeable item.  It was just explaining that untradeable means you're stuck with it while unique means you can only have one.

    4.  This kind of ties back into #1 & #2.  #1 shows how to compare somewhat, while #2 shows if you can use it or not.  Each item also has a list of what classes (or whole range of Disciples in some cases) can wear said gear.  Typically it works like this:

    - Cloth gear is for casters, with exceptions being gear with gathering and crafting stats for those associated classes.

    - Leather gear is for physical dps classes, with some being used by gatherers.

    - Mail is primarily for Dragoons, or to use as DPS pieces when you're not tanking as Gladiator/Marauder.

    - Plate is for tanks.
