Rift: Player Counts Rise Since F2P Conversion

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

According to a new report at GamesIndustry.biz, Trion Worlds has announced that Rift player numbers are significantly higher since the game's conversion from a subscription title to a F2P title. In addition, sales are up according to the report.

Speaking to Trion Worlds SVP of marketing Noah Maffitt, the [a]list daily discussed the transition of the MMORPG Rift from subscription to free-to-play. "I'm actually very pleased with how the team has executed on it," Maffitt said. "It was a planned transition that's taken months and months to do. They've thought through all the little details very well. We actually saw our sales go up after we announced free-to-play, because we think we have a compelling package around that transition. Our player counts have gone way up, as well. All early signs are good."

    Surprising, not.

Wildstar needs to take a page from the experiences of Trion and NOT stick with their plans to make the game full-pay and subscription-based.  Rift has benefited immensely from their hybrid model.

I just don't find the combat fun any more since GW2.

Really? I found Rifts combat system vastly better then GW2 which poorly executed its 'action combat'. Far more skill spammy with dodge added as the only bit of thought to it. Rift combat with the right souls is a lot more challenging and feels more rewarding. GW2 combat system is quite lack luster in both my opinion and if you really break down the combat and look at it as a whole how it plays, very 'slip and slidy' to put it poorly but in a fun sounding way. :)

To each their own I guess.

Still back on topic... dislike vague wording rather then numbers. I know marketting but far better to put numbers to it.

Who would have ever thought that giving the game out for free would bring in more players?

They already aren't holding up. There was a spike when it went F2P but that has largely died down now. Of course,  a marketing guy would never mention those fine details for obvious reasons.

A game goes f2p and number of players rises, this is suppose to be a big news? if the profit is even one million more than before then it should be considered a news.

Do you have some proof that players are leaving? let me guess, you are thinking that 1st week of f2p it was so tough to login as servers were always full but now they never go above high even in peak time. so people are leaving, right? wrong. a few days after f2p conversion they brought down all server and then doubled the capacity of all servers. so there is no more 1000 minute queue. i am playing everyday around peak hours and the servers are always high and chat channels are filled with spam(calling them spam because people are talking more about useless stuff not related to game) and every other kind of stuff you can imagine. using /who in capitals shows shit load of players and also the guild i am in always have around 100 players online at peak hour everyday. maybe your server is a pvp one, i hear they are dying; they are talking about it in official forums too.

This. I'm glad sales are up but the cost to the community is huge.

Good for them. Personally, I couldn't get into the game. Just doesn't have the atmosphere that sucks you in and makes you want to log into the game (keeps you thinking about the game when you're not logged in) like other MMOs have done for me.

Good for Trion.  They have one of the best f2p models out right now.  I would have kept playing if i liked the combat, but it's just too slow.

Say what you want about gw2 combat, but it's a least a lot more responsive than the combat of Rift. Rift combat is cluncky and not so responsive compared to GW2 or even WoW. And no, Rift combat isn't more challenging at all, at least from a PvE point of view. And yeah, I've played both games.

Also to the people saying that communities quality drop when a game become F2P, you guys couldn't be more wrong. Idiots and haters are in every single game, F2P or not.

Yes, Rift has gained an immense amount of free loading "looky loos" that have little to no intention of ever spending any money on the game.

Yeah, Wildstar sure needs that crowd.

I lost all interest in Rift after the f2p adaptation. It just felt so different. If all games go this route one day, I ll be done with MMOs, but then again I m not as into MMOs as I used to be.

I am also glad for Trion, but as I said earlier, they GG'd themselves. A rather foolish move, but perhaps the only one that could keep them afloat after the EoN/that SF action MMO trainwrecks. Perhaps they did it so they could keep deving the AA?

Huh?  That post makes about as much sense whatsoever.  I thought the class structure was much superior to many other MMO's because you can design your own class.  How can a class have a "flavor"?  Maybe you should reread your posts before posting.

Personally I find rift more fun now that more people are playing it.  I actually resubbed.

When are some of you going to learn that the f2p model is better.......Alot of these games start p2p, convert to f2p, company comes out and says that the f2p model brought in alot more players and revenue, and yet some players still insist the p2p model is better.....You can make every single game p2p if you like....If it makes you feel better to give 15 dollars a month, then go for it, but it doesn't make the game any better and you're not making the community better because you pay 15 dollars a month.....F2p is what the majority wants and these companies are giving it to them or going out of business.

There is a big problem here though:  More people may prefer f2p, because they are cheap and want free entertainment.

Very few games pull off f2p well.  GW2 did a decent job with the b2p model.  Games like LOTRO, EQ2 and especially Rift remind you of the cash shop constantly.  Its beyond tacky going to a vendor in Rift and a humongous window pops up reminding you that you dont need to earn a large amount of the games items, you can just buy them.  It creates a very different feel.  Rift's model is very player friendly in terms of what you get, but what little immersion Rift may have had is gone every time you vendor.

And f2p shifts the developers priorities.  In p2p, the incentive is to make the game good so people continue to find it worthy of their money.  In f2p the game quality comes second to trying to find ways to get money from people.

As I said, GW2 does it better than most.  But the downside is while GW2 has a LOT of players, it seems its only a modest financial success.  The less intrusive you make the f2p model, the tougher it is to make money.

And while the community effect is exaggerated, it is definitely there.  EQ2 and LOTRO still have strong communities, but they did weaken a little under f2p.  Its not as big of a downside as cash shop intrusion because there are always good guilds to find, even in toxic player bases like TERA.
