I always like to play as a dps in a group, the archer sounds great but the job from archer is the bard.Is the bard doing the same amount of dps as the black mage, monk or dragoon?or is the bard only a support class in a party and/or raid?
It will take awhile to figure out, given that the high level content has been locked since they brought back the Legacy characters.
Though Yoshi-P has said that Bard is DPS, I'd assume it is probably comparable to Summoner, Dragoon & Monk, maybe less than Black Mage, whilst just doing DPS.
If it is using a support Song, then DPS will go down by 20%, which I have no doubt will drop it below the others. Either way, they will still be desired, the trade off in Bard DPS for the MP or TP regeneration will probably be worth it.
The Bard is a dps support role mixed to my understanding. I also want to make sure you understand that the advanced Jobs don't necessarily beat the base classes in terms of damage or tanking or anything else. They're just a way to add more options on what you can do while in parties really. Some have gone so far as to say that you shouldn't even bother with one or two of the Jobs if you're going to play solo. Simply because they're more hell-bent on being used while in a group.
Dont be taken aback by the fact Bards are also support. All Jobs have some support, Summoner its most DoT DPS but also debuffs. Blackmage is AE and ST DDs but also CC. Bard is a DPS class that has some very useful support. Keeping the teams DPS going. This class will be needed in spades for their DPS as well as their support.
Also when you turn on a song, the buff just stays and is persistent. Your support role is very easy to look after. You will be focused on what you do as DPS 99% of the time.
Bard is DPS, there is no support class in FFXIV. People just say it is because it has a whopping 3 songs it can use as support. Unless its balanced incorrectly a Bards DPS should be on par with the others if is doesnt use its songs which lower damage by 20%. Id use the songs though ... youll take a hit on DPS but your teamates will be able to DPS more which should make up for it.

As mush as you lower your damage you will be able to spam skills more because your TP will be regening really fast. Also rain of death (Bard only skill) is really sick AE DPS that debuffs damage the mobs can do and 15% chance next Quick Nock will cost no TP for 10s. Even playing songs your DPS will be awesome.
Also worth keeping in mind that Songs drain MP whilst active, so it is likely that you can't keep them up all the time, so when they are down, you will be back to doing 100% DPS.

This is a great question and one I've thought of as well. If you look at the top weapons, you'll see that Bard weapons don't have the same DPS as other jobs such as Dragoon, Summoner, etc. Not to mention, when you are playing a song, Bard damage goes down.
So my guess is, if you are using a DPS meter, Bard will not stack up against the other DPS jobs. however, I don't think that's the main point of Bard. I think the Bard will make everyone else better, while continuing to do good damage as well. The overall result will be better than if you didn't have a Bard.
I don't think we know for sure, but that is my guess.

This is my understanding:
The Bard itself may not be doing a ton of DPS, but the overall group's DPS will be able shoot through the roof because of the Bard buffs.
The game isn't all about the individual character, it's about the group as a whole. The draw of the Bard isn't to be able to top the DPS charts, it's to allow everyone else to go even higher.

Agreed.
Though, that said, I've heard that bards still do pretty substantial DPS, especially in AoE situations (from a MrHappy video). It kind of makes you wonder if there won't be some belligerent players who refuse to cast songs unless they personally need their benefits, so that they don't take the individual dps hit...

Being that the jobs were not available in P4 I think all we can do is guess at this point. But that said, I would guess the bard mainly a dps class but with some support ability. Calling them "only a support class" has got to be completely off the mark.
I hope this gets watched closely. I don't know how many people the bards songs reach, but if it hits the whole raid why bring more than 1? Again, sorry for my ignorance I don't know much about the class or how the songs work, maybe they have 3 beneficial songs and you can bring three and all three have to keep their song up idk. But if you only need 1 song and it hits the whole raid, why would you want to have more than 1?

All 3 of the beneficial songs they have are at least situationally very good, they drain the Bard's mana so you can't keep them up 100% of the time, and have a moderate radius such that you're not guaranteed to hit the whole raid with it. It's probably a good idea to bring at least 2 to a 24 man raid if you can.

Bard was available, Job quests weren't, but anyone on a Legacy server would've had access to it still on their original characters (assuming they had unlocked it in 1.0).

Thats when you switch to Mage's Ballad and click Battle Voice to top up MP quickly.
