as a huge final fantasy fan - after the beta, i'm left wondering if 14 will be an equal to 11. i know an 11 replacement is not what SE is looking for, but as a customer and fan, i would sure like something that will deliver equal memories.
i remember when my monk hit 41 and got raging fists....or when i stood in line to get my NPC fellow...or when we beat zm8...or got my o-hat etc, etc, etc. I have screen dumps on a ps2 hdd of mass deaths in front of the tower, the entrance area in the nest and the citadel from MPK's before the mob de-pop nerf. all of us 11 players (pre abyssea) have tons of memories because of an mmo that made a hard core - community driven role playing game.
14 is looking nice so far - all my eggs are in their basket (fingers crossed).

Difficulty is a MUST.
There were glimmers of hope in Copperbell Mines, but thus far the game is numbingly simple. I'd hope they don't focus only on dungeons. There is plenty of things to play with on the FATE system. You keep that bland and you might as well remove it, would just be simple grinding.
They've said that pretty much everything for leveling will be easy, and that they would put all the difficulty into the max level stuff such as the Odin and Behemoth fights(FATES), the free company primals, the hardmode dungeons, and the raids. So I hope so because like you said, the leveling in this game is very easy. And it's not like SE is new to making challenging content.
I don't know man, I enjoy XIV, and I played XI for 7 years, it really was something else, but like a lot of people that played XI for early on, your life changes a lot in those years and for a lot of us we can't play a game like that due to the time requirements anymore. I really like this game as a modern MMO, only time will tell how it really goes but I think we'll be ok.
What made games like EQ and FFXI so memorable was the fact that you had to fight hard for everything you had, and in a harsh world you either band together or perish, its what made the community in those games so good, those days are pretty much gone, but FFXIV even in beta seemed to have a decent community, and once the game goes live we'll have the real answer in a few months.
