And when you get a quest where a guy wants a Hi potion, they're on the merchant in the area.

OJ is good for what ails you.  A healthy breakfast, and a power punch of sugar if youre failing.

*In a fashionable accent* Honey...those blue boots with purple leggings in the Fourth Umbral of this year? What a fashion faux pas! Don't get me started on the pink helmet with that gold necklace!

If you're starting in Limsa Lominsa, you should pick up an Orange Juice.

If you're starting in Gridania, you should pick up and Orange Juice.

There is only one place and one way to do that quest.  And there is only one place that your Story Quest takes you.  And unlocking the dye ability is on the way, and only takes 1 Orange Juice to turn it in.

So it's not just Ul'dah starters, it's everybody.  Unless you don't think you will ever be dying your gear, and don't want the handful of XP the quest gives.

If you're starting in Uldah I feel bad for you son.

    I got 99 classes but I ain't picked one.

If you follow the main story into the 20s, you get 10 orange juice free as a reward for it - so if you aren't a stickler about color matching too much (or if you are a caster, who naturally gets matching colored outfits, ha) then you can just wait.

It's only like 7 gil for one OJ though at that bar, so totally up to you.

OJ is readily available from every food vendor I saw in the main starter cities and you probably won't get to that quest til 10+ IF you know where it is or accidentally go near it - so I see no rush.  It *is* something to be aware of.

I suppose that's one interesting thing about this game.  For the most part it's ultra ez-mode early on, but then you run in to whack unintuitive things like dye that gives you no hint as to what's up.  You can buy dye, but can't use it.  And zero reason given why or how the system works.  I suppose it's somewhat cool to have a way out of the way quest that only exists in 1 of 3 starting regions to unlock the ability to dye...but why even let people buy dye if they can't use it (and/or not have those NPCs say something like, you really ought to go to talk to so and so *wink* *wink*).

There are other examples.  People know there are other starting cities.  It's the goofiest thing I've ever seen to have starters cities organized by class instead of by race and to lock people from easily going between.  People know they can fly between them but often have no idea that they need to wait and do story - all they really know is there's something preventing them from doing something simple.  Same with material.  Same with storage.  Why can't I fly, why can't I use the boat, why are classes I want and could unlock now in another city I can't get to.  Etc.  Some of these things done to "reduce stress" would seem to have the opposite effect at times.

With something like multi-class, if you try to add one, the NPC will politely tell you that you're too much of a noob to handle something so amazingly complicated til lvl 10...because being level 10 magically de-noobs you.  But for these other types of things - you know they exist but you're kind of in the dark.

Agree.  Hopefully help guides will start popping up on the internet soon.  I made at least three trips to the botanist guild trying to join.  The first one when I was roaming the city picking up and doing quests and found the guild for the first time, the second time when I hit level 10 on archer, and the third AFTER I finished the level 10 quest for the archer guild. (and although the npc ask for verification on whether or not player wants to join the guild of one's original class, there's not really much choice if one wishes to progress.....the first quest with three tasks should say "join guild," not just "visit guild").

But I guess one could also argue that trying to figure out how things work is part of the fun of the game....and it can be as long as a player can't mess up their progress by not knowing (example:  if at some point I want to dye my clothes so I ask around to figure out how to do it, only to find out it was a quest I should have done many levels ago, will the quest still be available  -- personally, I'm taking every quest offered, the main "oops" that I'm discovering is the need to progress a certain amount in my original class in order to unlock things, which may be an issue for players who enjoy focusing on harvesting and crafting since those are not options for starting class).

I agree that this is pretty random and unintuitive - but then again it is just a cosmetic feature so /shrug.

It actually makes lore sense to organize the guilds by city rather than race. And this is how it works in real life lol. People of all ethnicities are spread all over the place, but you can't professionally learn and work under every discipline there is to learn in every place. What need would Gridania or Uldah have for a Fisherman's Guild for example? The rest all have lore reasons for being where they are, some stronger than others (lore wise it makes no sense for the Conjurer's guild to be anywhere other than Gridania, the Thaumaturges anywhere but Uldah, etc. Yeah that leads to some gameplay inconveniences, but it's nice that they put that kind of character into the classes.

There's also good lore reasons for not letting you use the airships right away too, but they could tell you earlier in a tutorial, I agree. You can use the boats anytime so I'm not sure what you mean there. Materia melding is made out to be a special skill that has to be learned, like Dyeing, so that's why their is a quest for it. I agree that I shouldn't have to wait to get an Inn Room or hire a retainer though, those are kind of arbitrary.

Really, a few more well-placed tutorial windows would seem to solve most of the issues you are concerned with.

With something like multi-class, if you try to add one, the NPC will politely tell you that you're too much of a noob to handle something so amazingly complicated til lvl 10...because being level 10 magically de-noobs you.  But for these other types of things - you know they exist but you're kind of in the dark.

This is apparently something they did for simplicity sake for new players more than any lore reason, but they do give you a tutorial window and quest dialogue that tells you that you can join other guilds at 10 at least. The rest could be added in tutorial, I agree.
