I don't know what people said it to be, but I'm having fun with it. Just as a warning though, there are a lot of server issues. So if you can separate your frustration from the server issues from how the game itself is played out, you'll be able to enjoy it a lot better.
Im gonna go out on a limb here and say, no, no you will not be playing tonight.
Few are actually in game, I would like to know as well the actual game and how it plays.
Right now most are stuck without an activation code to even try to play, or are stuck in queue that kicks you out of the game when its your turn.
I think they even disabled purchases right now.
So if you haven't bought the game, don't bother it wont work. If you have the game patched up and ready to go, you might get lucky and get in, but I wouldn't bank on it given the amount of people who just cant play.
Too many people are playing, and a lot of people can't get in because of it. The game is fantastic server issues aside though, best fun I've had in an MMO since FFXI.
Barring a simple troll (given the current server answers), I'll answer.
I find the game very entertaining. It is an unapologetic themepark, but not one of the full breadcrumb trail versions of theimepark though. You have a fair amount of freedom in your path through the world.
The game IS storybased. The final fantasy series is known for its story, and so far this one does not disappoint.
really wish the positive comments would give a little substance to their raving reviews.
I feel like yeah the game might be good because a few people say its good...whats good about it...haven't the faintest idea.
I'll just run a list of some of the things then.
First, you're not pigeonholed into one class. Their armory system means whichever weapon you have equipped right now, is your class. Want to be a tank gladiator? Have a sword and shield equipped. Lancer? Change that sword and shield to a lance and now you're a lancer with all the dps'y goodness. Pretty much all of the classes and jobs in the game, you can level to the max level on ONE character. Oh, and if you change the class, you're attribute points are reset so you don't have to worry about having maxed strength on a caster class.
Second, crafting is a class of it's own. It's not just "Oh, I'm in a dungeon. i got this stuff, I'm going to craft it now." Nope, just like the weapons for the combat classes, you have to have the tools to change to the crafting classes. They also have their own input into some events. I can't remember the name of it, but there's one...FATE I think (Public events,) where it's in two stages, where the first the crafters reinforce the location as well as arm the NPCs, before the second phase goes to the combat classes fighting.
Lessee, mounts can also fight. Get off your chocobo, have em out as a combat companion and he'll peck your enemies into oblivion.
Player housing, the old fashioned guilds (Though called linkshells and Free companies. I think free companies are more like alliances underneath one of the three factions).
Depends on what you've been looking for. Its a theme park with older elements with a bit more freedom and randomness. You can start levelling any class (gathering/crafting) after tutorial ends. My guess is that it will be more grindy than your regular MMO, but rewarding at the same time, assuming you are grinding for mats in return craft items. As for crafting, it is very similar to EQ2, where you get hotbar abilities (like raising quality, fixing stuff etc). You can gather & craft without killing anything (to some extent) where as gatherers get stealth ability early on. It really depends on the fact how much of a role crafting will play.
As for combat: Tab targeting with 2.5 sec global cooldown. Might sound boring, but it is actually fine since the combat is responsive and animations are good. Characters are well animated both in and out of combat. Did 2 different dungeons so far and mechanics remind me of older titles. You can pretty much compare it to Vanilla WoW with a twist, a newer version so to speak: Aggro will break, you have to target what tank targets etc. People with bad habbits might struggle if the difficulty bar gets higher as you level up.
Also decent writing and good voice acting (although very limited). Quests - for the most part - made sense to me. Actually this is surprising but I am sold on the final fantasy setting. Also the art, environment, day/night cycle and weather makes the game world feel alive. The old feel of achieving and progressing also exist, if you are into that type of thing. You will go into large cities, look for trainers and stuff. At least that is how it is for the early part of the game.
I was afraid that I might dislike the art and theme (not a ff guy myself), but for now I've been enjoying it. I wont name any but I remember disliking a few asian art MMO's before. But hey, this is Final Fantasy, where east and west meets. You get elements from both sides.
I would say that the game is highly polished. Except for the server issues, the game itself is pretty much bug free and feels good overall. Good graphics (especially if you like the art style) and decent performance.
Some might call me crazy for that, but for some parts this game reminds me of early SWG. A more theme park version of course.
Very Immersive atmosphere, If you have a decent rig to max graphics you will be blown away , Without question the best looking MMO on the market. It really is a great game but just go in knowing it doesn't exactly bring anything new to the genre. With that said although everything is very familiar (quest-combat ect ) some things just feel very different and well done , music-crafting -atmosphere and the high level of detail in all the mobs , detail on a scale i have never seen in a mmo.
One more thing i Haven't had nearly the amount of log-in troubles the other drama queens on this board are claiming, But then again i DO work so i havent been attempting to play 24/7 this weekend.
I played yesterday from 4-9 NO ISSUES , and today from 12- to 7 with maybe a hour of downtime , that was it....
I'm loving it, despite some glaring server/connection issues.
Some things that I love about the game:
dynamic weather, lots of various weather effects.
able to sit in chairs, on stumps, etc... position dependent sitting animations add to the ambiance for me.
class / job system.
the chatter of voices grows as population grows in a certain area, again ambiance.
old school feel to the combat, slower paced GCD / Auto Attack / Tab Target.
the graphics are drop dead gorgeous and the engine is stellar.
attention to detail, i.e. terrain appropriate particle effects like grass flying off your feet when you run through a field, and then it changes to splashes of water flying off your feet when it's raining on that same field.
player driven economy with excellent crafting / gathering system.
great housing system coming in the near future.
great dungeons.
awesome story
not too many voice overs (I hate voice overs in mmorpgs)
day / night with dark nights and windows lighting up (also torches / lamps / candles / etc... lighting up,)
I love the mobs in this game. loved them in XI as well, really well designed imo.
chocobos
air ships
3 distinctly different starting areas.
zoned world. I like zones (non instanced overworld zones)
so much more... I could list stuff here all night
?A few things that I don't like:
fast travel, I'd be ok with this if they also had the option to take a long boat ride instead of simply zoning on the boat instantly to your destination. I want long airship rides too... with the chance of random pirate encounters and stuff.
too much solo based, quest quest quest style content early on... thankfully this ends eventually.
I hate short, weekend based betas... never seems to be enough time to work out the kinks.

Wow what a modest, two-sided, non fanboi review of the game. Thanks a ton for this post. Haven't been able to find any reasons why this game is great besides OMG FF YEYSEYSYEYSEYSYES

So long, and thanks for all the fish!
