Are they actually down or is it just a few of us that can't get on? ::::21::

I was in a christmas parade the other night, all the lights on the flaot were being run off batteries, we tested and retested to be sure everything was working, no sooner than the float started moving we got a spike and tripped every last one of our power converters.

Now Im a girl, and I know about as much about electricity as I do about Football, I enjoy it, I can turn it on, and I can turn it off. However, I just so happened to be the only one on the float in a position to even get to the converter boxes much less reset them.

So as our float is pulling into our spot in the parade here I was in my christmas dress head and arms in a battery bay, my legs sticking straight up in the air dress bunching up around my waist trying to remember what my boyfriend had said when he was hooking them up.

Needless to say it didn't come easy.

Moral of the story the pressure was on, I was totally humiliated and embaressed by my own shortcomings, but in the end I got them back on when I got them back on. No amount of unhappy people, hissing, jeering, or coulda, shoulda, or woulda made a single bit of difference in the scheme of things.

I understand your point, however, you admitted yourself that you know next to nothing about electricity. I hope to God that the people running SoG know a little more about running an MMO than you do about electricity. If they don't, well.... let's just say they should. So I don't see why we should all stand around saying "aww, it's alright, just get it up when you can" when they are a professional team that is supposed to know what they are doing. It's a different situation than your parade float batteries. Plus, people are not hissing, jeering, etc. at the devs, because the devs shut down the official forums. That makes no sense to me, btw, because the forums should not be on the same servers as the game. Annnnnyway... I'm just getting annoyed because I haven't even played the game yet - #server down# And I have very limited time to play (around 2 hours a weekday, plus I'm going on a business trip over the weekend.)

Actually having worked in the industry to a small degree I can tell you that just because you can code a script with your eyes closed and both hands behind your back doesnt mean you have the first clue what to do if you have hardware issues with your server farm.

A small shop like this ? ~ shrug ~ I hope they have a few systems engineers on staff, but who knows, they could very well be subcontracting the server support and hardware at least until they have an established title generating revenue. Hardware isn't cheap and alot of folks cut costs by leasing. I mean we may have some devs who have been taught how to reboot the servers if they tank, but what happens if they need to be tweaked or reconfigured, or god forbid a box needs to be pulled and replaced.

    Anywho.

As you can see when you first start the launcher, the servers are indeed up.

For some players the launcher redirects them to the DnL server instead of the SoG server, which won't be up till April. Common thought at the moment is this was done to replace the "server is full" message..

It'd be nice if they actually communicated with the players. This whole lack of communication thing is getting old.

It is pathos we lack, and this lack of pathos makes the worlds we explore quite stale.

    Good points all, BUT.

I recall a post some time back by the devs (wish I could lay my hand on it, but don't have the time to search -- even if the forums were up) stating that they did not need an open beta because they had this supa-dupa (sp altered for emphasis) server and that they had this nifty-wifty (words made up for emphasis) software tool that would simply simulate load.  No need to let thousands in and give it a 'real' test.

Now of course that was all prior to SoG's announcement, but it showed me how their strategy was just a wee bit askewed.  Of course, they are not the first company to think such silly thoughts -- I recall other games stating similar nonesense in the past, but when will this genre learn its lesson?

At the very least they should organize large numbers of fans to log in through the system EVEN if there is no actual playable game on the other end and the accounts are simply made up on the spot.  Getting things working as far as the login servers are typically a good portion of the battle they appear to face each and every time a new title arrives. Simulation is nice, but all to often it is far from complete let alone accurate (first pass certainly) in what it does test.

I suspect many of these shops fall prey to believing their server salesman.  That is the single biggest mistake they could ever make.  The salesman knows that once you buy a system and commit development to it that you have little or no choice to simply pay whatever is required to get it actually working come some millions of dollars in investment later when you find out they 'misunderstood' or more accurately blame you for 'mistating' your requests for quotes (which is impossible not to do really in systems like this-- real blame is hard to ascertain).  The point is salesman have nearly everything to gain from being wrong and very little to lose.

Did I ever say that the devs* specifically should know how to manage server hardware? No, but I would hope that someone around there does, even if it is contracted. A professional team should expect that the first few days they would have a lot of problems, crashes, etc. and would have the people on hand who would be able to fix it. The fact that the guy that codes the game has no clue what to do with hardware has no bearing on what we should expect from a professional company. In fact, if what you are suggesting is true and they have no one on hand who knows how to fix things, then I think we have even more reason to get upset. Again, this is supposed to be a professional company (Aren't all companies professional? Apparently not.) who do not just react to things but expect and prepare for things to happen.

Is everyone getting the same error message? "Sorry darkandlight server has not opened yet.  Please. try again later.  #server down#"  This is different than the text box the servers have reaxched their capacity from yesterday.
