I don't know who referred Divergence to Sandboxer, but they seem to have provided a pinch of misinformation. The alpha is only available to those who give $100+ to kickstarter.

I think Casner said they have something currently open that people can see the game world without donating right now. Here's his comment from their KS page:
"Anyone can log into the game and check it out or not even without a contribution. But you log in by default without any powers of any kind so all you can do is "look". If you want to actually be able to interact, create, destroy, etc, that's where your Alpha Gold status comes into play. I'll be posting this as an update as well to help clarify. Thanks guys!" -EthanC
But that aside, the number of backers doesn't seem to add up.

But you log in by default without any powers of any kind so all you can do is "look".
