Thought this was worth its own thread-

http://www.dualshockers.com/2013/08/29/final-fantasy-xiv-breaks-more-records-with-218000-concurrent-connections-players-will-receive-free-days/

"

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is getting more and more popular despite the server problems and the suspension of digital sales due to excessive traffic, and Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida (that I recently interviewed at Gamescom) provided some new data for our perusal.

Just yesterday we learned that the game had broken the record for concurrent connections (users online at the same time) for an online game operated by a Japanese company with 187,000 users online at the same time, and today’s numbers are even higher.

According to Yoshida-san the traffic peak touched 218,000 users connected at the same time, showing that the popularity of the game is continuing to grow despite the problems caused by server congestion.

The development team is keeping up the good work on improving the situation, and is focusing on solving the problems at the root with enhancements to the server structure and the implementation of new servers instead of resorting to placebo solutions like an automatic kick for inactive players.

The implementation and optimization of the server is almost done, with the software installed on the machines and testing underway. The measures taken by the development team are expected to increase the capacity of both the Japanese and the North American/European datacenters significantly, smoothing out the login and performance issues. In addition to that, they will also increase visibly the performance of the content finder and of party matching.

Work is scheduled to be completed during the week end and we’ll see its effects at the beginning of next week.

It’s definitely worth mentionning that Yoshida-san also promised that in order to make it up to the players affected by the problems caused by server congestion, everyone will receive an extension to the free period by “several days” after the issues will be solved.

Broken records, better performance and free gameplay, what’s not to love?"

I almost feel bad getting extra free time, given that I have had very little problems during the whole launch.  Worst thing that happened to me was 3 hours maintenance twice, but I just took a break and did something else meanwhile.

It is good though that those who were affected get some compensation.

Good news.  Honestly the free days were all I wanted.  I can forgive the shitty launch as long as what I paid for is compensated.  Game is fantastic btw :D.

Every official announcement I read seems highly professional, appropriate and usually the best action they can take in the current situation, well done SE.

Im with you man I have had little problems logging in, only problem was i had to wait a whole 5 minutes one day because the world was full.  Im glad ive found a game that I can sub to finally.  Im ready to give them the monthly fee because they deserve it for this wonderful game.

Same here. I've had some queues at logon though, but not as bad as some claim.

And yeah, I also was effected by that maintenance, but 30 minutes after it started I had to go to work anyway ;-)

Glad to see SE taking this whole thing seriously. Truth be told, I'm having some fun with this game, and I'm a sandboxer! Let's see if it can keep me entertained past the first month...

Hope not too many of those concurrent users are AFKers -_-

They need to let others play

Excellent. How many days? Two days... seven days... many days? It is almost impossible to log in during late afternoon/early evening hours EST. Free is always nice.

Sweet free play time!! Although I shouldn't be the one complaining once I realized that they don't log you off for AFKing I just leave my char in the Inn room while at work. Come back a - ton of rest exp and no need to wait in line :-)

Only had problems with logging in for 1 day and only slight performance issues due to avoiding most of the hotspots. Great they are working on it. Contacted support some time ago and they really want to try and help every single individual playing the game
