Confused on Class Job progression.

Can somebody please set the record straight. I am currently playing as a GLD lvl 27 and various websites told me to pump everything into STR and DEX up until level 50, then grind out 15 levels for CON and 26 levels as a MRD. then switch my class to PLD and while I am leveling it up dump everything into VIT.

My Free Company just informed me that my GLD/PLD will level side by side. so now I am at a loss on what to do. I'm currently grinding on FATES because I don't want to waste my story quest, and How am I supposed to max out my STR and DEX and VIT when GLD/PLD level side by side? :?

the primary class of the job, is what determines the job level. nothing your secondaries do will reflect on the job other then abilities you can plug int the build, the attributes will be the ones of your primary class.

F2P may be the way of the future, but ya know they dont make them like they used toimage
Proper Grammer & spelling are extra, corrections will be LOL at.

DEX is the one not needed for pld or gld.  you can build a str/vit pld which is preferred dex does next to nothing for a pld.

Basically, while you are paladin (I'm guessing that's why you're getting GLD to 30), you are technically still a Gladiator.  All the Jobs do is add in skills, as long as the Job soul is equipped, which you get a 30 gld, 15 con, after doing a quest.  Nothing really changes at 30, other than you no longer go to gladiator's guild for your class quest, you'll go to the paladin NPC for job quests.  You don't start over at level 1 or anything.  You're still a Gladiator, just with added paladin skills.

Also, I would put everything into VIT for paladin.  Some will say that you need STR for threat generation, but I have no problems at all with threat once I got Shield Oath at 40.  Before 40 it was a struggle with aoe threat, but single target you should never have problems.

I hate to beat this dead horse...

Is there someplace GOOD that I can read about this?  Because I kinda understand what you guys are saying but I'll be darned if I'm not confused by the mechanics as well.  Keep in mind I'm only a lvl 6 GLD (so I have a bit to go) but the entire 2 jobs to have an advanced job thing is a bit mind blowing in how it works in this particular FF game.

You are only 6, you don't need to understand it yet. I learned most from just playing as the game explains almost everything anyway.

Probably can't trust any info on these subjects as no one can really play long enough without getting booted to find out what really works.

Yea, I am lvl 6.. but I'd had to hamstring myself if I can prevent it.  I just like having a ballpark game plan.

And there are lvl 40-50's so not everyone is having issues connecting.

    Okay here are the basics:

You start with one Class and after completing the level 10 class quest you unlock all other classes. In order to obtain those classes you have to visit the class guilds and speak to the receptionists.

Being a class in this game basically means equipping a main weapon of said class. If you equip a bow you are an Archer that instant if you did obtain the Archer Class, if you equip a Lance/Polearm you are a Lancer etc.

Each Class has it's own levels and gear and you can easily save whole gear sets from the Character Menu (C). They level independently.

Now every single ability in the game is tagged for several Classes, just check one of yours it will show something like GLD PLD MRD WAR, all of those are abbreviations for the classes/jobs and that means you can equip those abilities in your cross class slots.

Those cross class slots are unlocked every 5 levels, at 5 you can use 1 ability from other classes, at 10 you use 2 abilities etc (I think it was every 5 levels). To be able to use said ability you have to progress in the specific class far enough to actually learn it and at the same time you have to be high enough level on your current class, for example: You are Gladiator level 14 and Lancer level 50, you wont be able to use the high level lancer skills in your two cross class skills but you can use two other compatible skills you learned as Lancer that are level 14 or lower.

From there you can equip abilities from as many classes as you have unlocked if they meet the compatibility factor (they state your current class as compatible in the skills tool tip) and you are high enough. This means at level 50 you can equip 10 different abilities.

Now you have to take into account that different abilities might scale off different stats. For example if you equip a cure from the conjurer class on your gladiator it will be pretty gimp as cure scales of mind and you would have very little of that stat as gladiator.

    Now to Jobs:

A job is merely a piece of equipment. Every base class (the classes you start with) currently have 1 usable soulstone that they can equip, except for the arcanist which has two. The jobs have two requirements, level 30 in the main class and level 15 in the supporting class. In order to be able to equip the Paladin soulstone which would make your gladiator have the job paladin you need to be level 30 in the gladiator class and level 15 Conjurer (I think it is conjurer, there is a lot of outdated info on the web so you should make sure with someone who actually is paladin right now in this version).

Assuming that job gives you few new job specific abilities, for example those listed there:  http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Paladin . Those abilities are generally good for group play and instances so most serious players will probably use a job. The downside is it cuts the cross class slots you have in half and also restricts you to fewer classes for those slots, for example the Paladin can only use Marauder, Gladiator and Conjurer skills. Wanted that fancy self heal that scales of attack power from the puglisist? Nope. You can't. That skill is this one: http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Second_Wind and as you can see if you do not equip the soulstone and stay a pure gladiator you could still use it.

I didn't dig deep enough into the specific classes yet but in theory you probably can be very successful without taking a job as it opens the potential cross class abilities in number and option, especially for soloing and maybe pvping this would most likely be preferable over the few specific job abilities.

To clarify again, a Job is just a class equipped with a soulstone. If you are level 40 Gladiator and equip it you will be level 40 Paladin. If you keep leveling up while having it equipped it is actually the main class Gladiator that you are leveling up, Paladin itself doesn't have levels.

Also to mention: The bonus stats you can distribute are based on your class. So if you pump everything into strength as Lancer and equip the conjurer class, you can pump everything there into mind instead.

Disclaimer: I cannot guarantee that everything I wrote is 100% right as there is a lot of different information on the internet but this is what I gathered from in the game and few guides that were targeted at 2.0.

Simply think of the paladin as an add-on for the gladiator.
