Classes?

From what I've read you can level all classes on one Character is this true? Or are you restricted to either Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic paired with all DoH/DoL classes?

Thanks.

You can level all of them :). You can unlock certain Jobs when you level certain classes to a point.

For example leveling lancer to 30 and marauder to 15 unlocks the Dragoon Job.

    Read about them here- http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/pr/game/#!/jobs

Is there any penalty, in any way, if you choose to continue a different path than the one you started?

For example you start as Marauder but later on when you can you start leveling the healer class and continue with that one. This behavior doesn't come with penalties in some way (other than racial stats perhaps)?

There is no penalty for learning every class on the one character, in fact its better for multiclass skills.

The penalty is that the second and third classes take longer than the first, and subsequent classes take even longer than that, with no new source of quest gear / experience.

Depends on perspective.  There are no penalties per say, but you will have fewer quests to level with which forces you more into dungeon or FATE grinding.  Both of which are usually faster than quests, so it's a matter of perspective.

However, you will get a scaled experience bonus the magnitude of which depends on the level difference between your new class and your highest class.  So let's say I'm a level 40 arcanist.  I switch to Marauder level 1.  I will have a really noticeable experience boost which will decrease slightly as I get closer to 40.  Once I hit 40 with the marauder, it would be tied with my arcanist and will not receive any additional experience bonus.

I see, thanks for the replies.

So basically it all comes down to leveling speed, but as long as additional classes don't require more XP per level I see no issue with that.

    It's the same.

The only real downside I can think of is some races ever-so-slightly favour physical damage vs caster classes. But by endgame the differences will be so slight as to not really worth worrying about. But to some min/maxers it might matter.
