Hola, I started a Botanist for the purpose of making money. I heard something about shards but not sure what they were talking about. Can someone give me a little bit of info on these shards I can sell for profit?

I assume that you are talking about the elemental shards? When you go and use your crafting skill you can select to collect a type of shard instead of a material. Just have a look in your gathering log to let you know where you can collect what type of shard. I would assume the best ones to get would be ones used in Weaving, Alchemy and Cooking.

Shards sell for a lot, but give little leveling XP for the gathering profession.  So that's the tradeoff.

All are in demand, really, it just depends on the craft, because these are basically required to "fuel" every crafting combine.

For botany, however, due to the diremite webs fiasco, cotton bolls are in huge demand now, so they will probably make more money in the short term than shards will.

    Can you elaborate on this?

Diremite webs are required for all velveteen combines.  Diremite webs are only dropped by mid to higher level mites, and not a common drop either.  So the price on the market is now 250-350 per item (not per stack).  It's a huge roadblock for weavers.  You can try to grind them yourself, but it's very time consuming to get hundreds of items, and there is an industrial scale farming operation going on where the proper mites are, as well, lowering the efficiency of self-grinding them.

So, a good number of weavers are trying to power through the issue by doing a huge number of cotton-based combines.  So, this is creating a high demand for cotton and cotton-based inputs on the market, driving up the prices due to the diremite webs issue.  Basically the game created a huge market issue by making a lower midlevel crafting combine be an uncommon drop from an uncommon mob, which creates market opportunities for botanists as a result.

Thank you for that elaboration Knightblast. I would assume that such things are happening in all professions at some level or another, but it will be more prevalent with the craft that makes (some if not the most common pieces) of crafting gear.

As a botanist, thanks for the explanation Knightblast.
