skill based combat

So we all know DDO is coming out with a twitch-ish combat, in the style of Diablo. Ive heard people whine others rant and rave. i think its a very good idea because it gaurantees a certain level of skill. But i think the best form of combat would consist of multiple swings and blocks that requires players to be quick with the mouse and be able to react with blocks and timed swings. For example, swing left would be left click, swing right would be right click. swing overhead would be both clicked, and whatever other swings we could possibly think of. Block left would be shift+leftclick, etc. Players have to match the oppenent's swing with a block to avoid damage, and use different attack angles and swing combos and soforth. I would praise a developed combat system like this because i get sick of being unable to kill people who spend all day on their rear at the computer leveling up, when i might actually be a smarter or quicker player (i do have quite a background in counterstrike, you know), but not as high of a level.

yes, i'll get tons of grief for this whole thing, but i hope to hear some amen's from people who are just waiting for that perfect fighting game to come out

Well, its not a bad idea, but just not suited for a MMORPG IMHO. Alot of work for something that is more about playing the role than perfectly reenacting fight scenes

Your idea is good, but it has one flaw. The difficulty. I know i could probably do it and get the hang of it. But there are alot of people that don't have that kind of reaction time or skill. They would screw over the game if they made a battle system that few people could master. The battle system can't be 100% based on player action either, it would be too easy for people who can get the hang of it and make things like accuracy and armor class useless. Sure you could do it your way with the complicated attacks and then if you hit, see if it got past the armor class... but why would you go through all the trouble of blocking high, blocking left, attack left, then right, then up, then right, then right, then block again! only to have it not get through the armor. The DDO system makes it challenging but easy enough for people that arn't as much action orientated and it still leaves room for plenty of skill with dodging and blocking. It would also be hell on a programmer to deal with attacking/blocking on 4 different areas (high/low/left/right).

    Question

I remember way back when I used to play D&D with my friends. We used to play the board game version.
How close does this game come to capturing the spirit of old time D&D? This game may be the ticket, as I am looking for a new game to form a major addiction on.

    Thanks Spard

Sounds sort of cool, but tough to implement in a MMO with lag between when your opponent performs an action and you actually see it executed. Also seems a bit complicated with so many different ways to swing and block.

I like the combat in City of Heroes a lot. I wish it had some way of reacting to attacks sort of like you've described, like holding down the shift key to perform a block or throw up a force field or something, but right now the best you can do is break line of sight on certain long-range attacks that take a few seconds to activate.

I for one, think that even though a great idea, that your type of combat would cause to much lag between when the keys were pressed and when it was executed on the screen which would make people with faster comps have the advantage.

It seams you are actually waiting for AGE OF CONAN mmorpg.

DDO will neither be really Twitch based - Neither will it have ANY form of PVP

Mount & Blade's combat should be considered the holy grail of MMORPG combat.

    One day, maybe...

That said, Roma Victor's combat is a pretty good compromise here, and Darkfall Online is also going for something that is about 70% similar to Mount & Blade (based on an IRC quote from the head dev when asked to compare Darkfall's combat to M&B on a scale of 1-10). It would appear that slightly more engaging combat is something a lot of upcoming MMOs are moving towards, and I for one welcome our new non-autoattack overlords.
