MMORPG.COM News: Star Trek Online Survey Results Posted

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Perpetual Entertainment, the developers of the highly anticipated franchise MMORPG, Star Trek: Online are committed to finding out what their potential players want in a game. While still very early on in their development, Perpetual commissioned a survey. The survey took a look at fans of both MMOs and of Star Trek more generally. It asked a wide variety of questions, from what races or factions that you might like to play, to which high-level features potential players would like to see. Now, it is not unusual for a game company to conduct customer surveys on their product, but it IS unusual that they would share it with their community. Take a look:

In September 2005 we contracted with Nielsen Media Research to conducted an extensive survey in order to learn more about our opportunity, characterize our target audience, and test specific design decisions. Using web-ads placed on sites oriented towards MMO and PC gamers, Nielsen selected over 600 active gamers who expressed interest in both Star Trek and MMOs. They then used additional filter questions sorted participants into three groups of about 200 each:

* MMO gamers: Those who play MMOs frequently with various levels of Star Trek enthusiasm. * Star Trek enthusiasts: Those who expressed a high level of interest in Star Trek and had watched several series and many episodes. * Gamers: Those with at least a minimal interest in Star Trek and MMOs who don't fall into the MMO or Star Trek enthusiast categories.

The purpose of selecting people who fit into one of these three groups was to ensure that we were getting feedback from people who might be interested in Star Trek Online and to understand our opportunity within various target audiences. We also wanted to ensure that we were hearing from people beyond those that identify themselves as Star Trek enthusiasts since we assume their opinion is under represented within the existing Star Trek Online community forums.

We asked this sample of our potential audience over fifty questions that covered everything from general game playing habits to demographic data, with a focus on MMO preferences and feature guidance. Below I'll cover some of the highlights from the results.

To take a look at all of the categories and results, click here.

I would love a guild spaceship where everyone is all part of the inner-workings of the ship and the guild leader is captain. That way the guild would be with eachother at all times and really get to know eachother and grow stronger.

Im a HUGE fan of star trek, seen every movie, all the tv series. to make it a good MMO i think it would have to be similar to eve online for space battles, trading, traveling. but star trek i beleive will have to be alot more indepth. like traveling the universe and able to teleport on almost every planet. the planets can be instances where the team would do their missions, fight aliens or other factions that are not in peace with your faction. there should be LOTS of customization and Events. how cool would it be during an event you would have to defend your home planet from the borg or a hard mission to save someone in borg space (these kind of mission will probably be high lvl missions).

i think it would be difficult for them to make a game where everone was a unique person on 1 ship. i beleive every player should have their own ship. the customization of the ship can be like buying new sheilds or phasers, cannons, cores and the most interesting crew members. each crew member will have a task to make your ship better. like some engineers can give you sheild bonus or better sheild recovery. another kool thing would be to use these crew members in missions in an instance(kinda like recruiting bots in guild wars) for solo missions. your crew members should also beable to lvl up and gain better skills to make your ship better.

i can think of alot more things. but if these ideas were in the game i would love it like crazy. also, if they read this, PLEASE do not make this a grinding for hours game.

I love the idea behind this game. I really hate games that are 1 ship per person I mean COME ON. A galaxy class starship would never have just one person and while I dont feel it should make it so you can only run one if you have 500 people for the larger ships you should at least have to have 20-30 players to run it. I really hate that whole one ship for one person thing its just not realistic at all and it really wouldn't be true to the franchise to go that route. To me it would me much more fun to have the capitan comunicate down to enginering how he need more power. and me of corse yelling back "Capin I cant doit, she's gunna blow"

I think you should also have crew housing on ship that you can customize with spac loot =)

    as far as playable races

the Federation (with a few various races), The Klingon Empire, The Romulan Empire, The Cardasian Empire, and the Borg (gotta have the borg for the comunists out there =) And then add more with expansions Borg could be an Expansion I think you gotta have the first 4 tho and then have Events that will pit the them against eachother as well as alliences. There is just so much you could do with this game if its any good at all im buying it

(I wanna be a Romulan Come on They gotta put em in)
20-30 Depending on hwo big the game gets if it gets really big like WoW or somthing have it be 50-70 or somthing like that although I doubt it would get that big i mean wow is unpresidented

how can it be like that tho? sounds like all engineering classes will be locked up on the ship all the time. you want it to be like just like on tv, but think about how chars would be able to lvl up and how to travel. your asking that players fill up a starship and take orders from a captain. sounds kinda boring to me if all your doing is fixing a ship if your a engineer. what do you do when your not fixing stuff?

i beleive everyone starts out with a small ship. once they join a guild/faction, they can board the guilds ship and do mission with clan members or other things. but what about the casual gamer, sopose he just wants to do a solo mission? he can get his small ship and go out on his own. down the road they can buy new ships.

my way doesnt sound to star treky, but i think its logical. you cant make the game too boring. sopose you wana be a medic, what are you gonna do? stay on the ship 24/7 healing people? go on missions and what? heal more people? medics are not very strong you know. i dont think they can make this game like the tv show or movies. but just try to mimic it. there should be a good level or solo play and good level of party play. what your asking is for 20 people to run 1 ship, sopose security are noobs? then your all ****ed. then the ship blows up. then what? ok respawn at home planet, oh but then all security goes offline, who the hell is gonna fire the ship? i dont think we can have 20 people run a ship, but instead 1 ship a person, guilds get the big ships where individual players can dock their ships and all travel as 1 group.

As a player of Eve Online for almost 2 years, i like the idea of a timed skill tree, instead of "LVLing" up levels, as also a player of the defunct Earth and Beyond which had the "LVLing" system, once u reached the highest lvl, it was at a major disapointment, because u had no way to improve ur char.

Having skills ontop of skills, that have to take time to train makes it more satisfying to reach it, and make for more specialized players, esp since i think this STO MMorg will appeal to Role Players(i am not a Role PLayer), i think more then your average gamer, but as a Sci-Fi buff, this is one game i'm definately looking forward to see how its developed, and released, and like Eve Online, STO needs a non-consensual PvP esp against non-faction players, but would like to see sub-faction divisions.....and i hope to get into the testing phase for gamers, or upon release when its completed

I agree that it should be skill based, and going up the skills tree should be different for every race based on the cultural differences. The startrek universe has a lot to offer, i hope they'll make the best of it

Its no great effort to ask for input, it means even less.  Even SOE asks for feedback, they just never use it, not even their own test volunteers.   Whether they actually read, or more importantly use, what info is given to them by the mmorpg playing community remains to be seen.

Well, here's to hoping that they will.  Should it appear that they are on the level, they'll have more of my support.  What I've seen so far hasn't impressed me much.  That interactive panel display for starship controls on their website frankly strikes me as tedious.

image Okay on the topic of the space command, heres what needs to be done! If you have ever watched star trek you know the next officer in line gets command of the ship in the captains absence! What needs to be done is a full starship crew should be available but only around 20 per ship and the rest should be computer players, when the captain is offline the next in charge as a human player should take command automatically. If no human officers are on the bridge then it should be put on a timer and then sent to a logout stage which would dock the ship at the nearest space station or whatnot.

I am glad they are considering faction pvp, because without it... the game would just be completely unrealistic. Computer captains can play a part in overall system defense if one side outnumbers the other and even greater security measures can go over more important planets. I am confident it can be balanced in such a way to make a realistic situation while not harming the less violent types such as crafters, shop keepers, scientists, etc.

    Hope the ideas sound cool!
