You would probably have the easiest time starting out with a warrior.  They're the most basic class, and will let you get used to the game's basic features a lot faster than any of the other classes.

Note that you can can freely switch between classes in your mog house, so it's not like you're nailed into a class anyways. If you've got a few hundred gil and don't like the class you choose, buy a suitable 1st level weapon for another class, buy the 1st level spell for that class if you want to switch to a mage class, and go forth and try it out!

I personally started with Warrior but at around lvl 18 (where I got the sub-job quest done too) I switched to Monk and have been playing it up to now (lvl 38). Generally any melee combat class is a good start. Especially if you are new to the MMORPG world wholy.

It all depends if you like playing mage, melee or tank classes. If you like to play melee or tank, start out with warrior, level it to 18, get your subjob items, level monk up to at least 18, then level warrior to 37. Any tank or melee job will benefit from having a warrior subjob, which caps at 37.

If you like playing mages, start off with white mage to 18, just for the fast invites after level 11 when you hit the dunes. Then level up your blm or rdm.

Once you get to 30 you have the option of opening up 9 more jobs which may appeal to you more.

i'd say try 'em all! see which one you like best, as stated earlier you're not nailed down to a single job you can switch anytime you feel like it.

And as for race... i'd say pick whatever you think looks the best, they can all do any job pretty well... it's all up to you

this really depends on which race you take in the beginning.

you have: Mithra, Galka, Hume, Elvaan and Tarutaru

Mithra (the cat-like creatures) have nice DEX so they are generally good Thief in the beginning, they can also make decent Warrior's.

Hume can be any class, Black mage, White mage, warrior, monk, redmage and thief.   unlike other races, Hume has no specialty, all their Stats are pretty much equil to eachother, so they can be pretty much any class they want.

Galka (the big gorilla guys) have insane VIT, so they are the best Monk, they are very very good at Monk, also they rock at being warrior's, Mage is a big nono for these guys, for mage you need INT and MND (intelligence and Mind) they guys have the lowest in the game.

TaruTaru (lil guys) once in a while you see one of these little guys with a sword as a Warrior or Thief or something, but these giys SUCK at melee. if your TaruTaru, you wanna be a mage, the best race for mage by far in the game, they have high INT and MND, so they can be both White mage and Black mage, they also make decent Red mage.

Elvaan (pointy eares) are the best Warrior and Red mage in my opinion, i think these guys have a nice AGI and STR, they're close to Hume, not really master at anything, but good at everything.

here's what all the classes are:

Black mage: you outta know this, these Mages use Black Magic to hurt a foe. spells like Fire, Blizzard and thunder, you know the drill. Black mages are focused completely on INT, that increases they're spells damage.

White mage: white mage is exactly the oposite of Black, they use healing and supportive magic to aid themselves, and others, poeple love WHM's for their curative ability's later in game. they have basic spells like: Cure, Protect, Shell, Poisona and paralyze. dont worry, they also have a little but of offensive magic, spells like paralyze, Dia (weaken a foe, sort of like poison) Banish (hurts a foe) , and Banishga (hurts all enemies)

Red mage: Red mage is all the basic classes combined. they use White and Black magic. but they can also wield a sword and daggers. they would SEEM to be the best, but dont be fooled. they have lower MP (magic points) than WHM or BLM, and they dont have as much Strength, Intelligence, Mind and Dex as other classes do. still, one of my most favorite classes, and a very usefull one at that.

Warrior: quite obvious really, just a guy with a weapon hurting poeple XD (lol) Warrior's are a main part in a party team (a group that gets together to kill strong monsters for better exp) in the beginning, they have the ability "Provoke", which makes a monster hurt them, getting they're attention off others. they usually have great HP (hit points) and good STR (strength), and because they use Axes, Great Axes and Great Swords, they have a very nice damage in the beginning, the best melee in the beginning.

Thief: Thief are a quick, fast, evasive and agile class. they usually wield a Dagger or sword, they have one of the best DEX (dexterity, how qucik you are wtih weapons) and AGI in the game (AGI is agility, has to do with evasiveness)  they dont have the best damage in the world, but they are good pullers (poeple that go out and fetch a monster with a ranged weapon for their party to fight) they start off pretty dull, but they become one of the best classes in the game later on.

Monk: Monk uses H2h weapons, (Hand 2 Hand) they have the best HP in game (really...just massive..) and they have a very nice STR, they hit twice, so they do alot of damage, they have some of the best weapon skills (weapon skills are abilitý's u can use when your TP% reaches above 100% in a battle) in the game. dispite they're good VIT and HP, they have a low defence.

those are all the starter classes and races.... there are more classes u can get when u hit lvl 30, lemme go through em quick.

Paladin: a cross between White mage and Warrior, basically a warrior with INSANE defence that cure himself and others. low attack

Dark Knight: oposite of Paladin, these guys have AWESOME attack and STR, and they use Black magic to hurt and enfeeble foe's, but they have the worst DEF in game, so watch out for hard hitting monsters.

Ranger: Ranger is focused on they're Ranged atatcks only, they use the best crossbows and bows and arrows. they have good DEX and AGI, so they can be handy with a dagger, their ranged attack can reach a collosel amount of dmg. but without arrows, these guys are a weaker form of THF, they have no good HP and reasonable STR and  DEF.

Summoner: obviously, these guys call upon creatures to help them in battle, they have the best MP in game by FAR. but the LOWEST HP in game. they focus mainly on their summons to do all the fighting, Summoners can ue curative magic like a WHM can.

Ninja; Said to be the strongest class in game, these guys have so much evasion, they can barely be hit, they also recieve "Dual Wield" ability at lvl 10, which allows them to use 2 weapon at once!  they have no good HP, and sucky DEF, they can use Ninjitsu magic to increase all sortos of stats, like EVA DEX and AGI mostly, they can also use elemental Ninjitsu, too bad it sucks... they are said to be best Tank in game.

Samurai: have the best ACC in game, and they have good STR too, they use ability's to increase they're TP to 100% and over, so they can get to use Weapon skills quickly and frequently, good HP, bad DEF, they have the strongest Skillchains (combinations made by players weapon skills) in game.

Beastmaster: these guys have the ability to "Charm" animals under their control, meaning they can have monsters fight for them for about 5 mins untill they dis obey and become hostile again. good STR, attack and DEF. too bad they have no worth in PT (party team)  so they solo through most of the game. they tend to sub /WHM, so they can cure themselves. very good and powerul job.

Dragoon: these guys's STR matches up to a DRK (dark knights) almost. they have good HP STR, but, like DRK, sucky def. they call upon wyvren's (small dragons) to aid them. they have the feared "Jump" ability, allows them to jump in the air, coming down on the enemy, hard. they have VERY good WS, they do massive DMG, too bad that without Wyvren they are quite useless solo'ing, (if wyvren dies, it will come back in 2hr's. so that sucks) good job, they are good melee.

Bard: these guys are...well....weird, they use Instruments to aid the pt. pt's love these guys, they can raise ACC and DEX and stuff, makes a huge difference, they can use Swords, so thats pretty good. all their Stats are pretty low, but they dont REALLY need any of them anyway. odd, but very handy job.

btw, at lvl 18,you have the option to get a Sub Job, a supportive job, that will raise your stats by having like a second job, so if u do WAR/MNK, the warrior HP will be raised, and also VIT.  but, the WAR's DEF might be pulled down. so theres a dis advantage aswell to it.

Have Fun! this is a great game

Elvaan STR is great, only Galka equal it. But their AGI sucks, making them poor rangers (and poor archers in general--that's one of the jokes about the opening movie: "Of course they lost, they used Elvaan rangers!" :-) It's always been ironic that the elf-like race in FFXI makes the worst archers...) Their MND is also excellent, making them generally good WHMs in spite of their relatively low MPs. RDM is less good, as their low MPs and INT catch up with them here (BLM is even worse). But with the right equipment, you can really play any race against type.

oh i dont mean to be rude but nova has the stats kinda wrong.

Tarutarus: have the highest INT in the game an MP by a huge margin these lil guys are full of MP but sorry to say elvaans have the highest MND not these little guys.

Elvaans: have the highest STR, second highest VIT, Highest MND, but lowest INT and very low agi. there dex is about par.

Humes: pretty much even all the way around. Humes can use some of there RSE to boost different stats depending on the job so its a nice thing to pick up.

Mithra: Have highest AGI and DEX. Though there mp is the same as the humes there INT and MND are lower also only tarus have lower vit then things kitty cats.

Galka: Have tons and tons of VIT and HP, but the lowest MP in the game though there INT and MND is about even with a humes the lack of MP makes it hard for these guys to do mage jobs. But that doesnt mean you can there is a galka on my server that has whm and blm both to 75.

The cool thing about this game is that race really doesnt matter cause there is so many different kinds of equip to make up for lack of any stat. And to me player skill and there ability to do there job well is more important then race anyday.
