I've purchased a new copy of FFXI since my old key is no longer valid due to prolonged inactivity; thank you wow. I'm really looking forward to playing this game again, but I've noticed that you can buy millions of gil for dirt cheap... this has me a little bit nervous. How is the economy in the game and how easy/difficult is to earn your own gil? Seeing as how I'll be starting from level 1 and zero wealth, I'm worried that by the time that I'm ready to start buying/selling items through the AH, it will be next to impossible to compete without dedicating months of gil farming or actually *cringe* buying gil with real money. I'm not too concerned about mastering the economy in any MMO, only enough to keep my character well equipped and afford some luxuries through trading/crafting.
Thanks in advance.

There's been inflation, no lie. But the stuff you farm has inflated along with everything else: Beehive chips, for example, have had a recent jump on my server, as has zinc ore (which any newbie can easily mine). I started last May and haven't had too much trouble making my way in the economy. Try it, and see how you do.

I recently discovered the great art of...FISHING! Seriously,it is a cool and addictive way to pass ur time while waiting for a pt. And u also get to sell the fish u catch. Just go grab a bamboo rod and some little worms.
Fishing was one of the aspects of the game that I actually really enjoyed, so that's good to hear that you can still make a decent profit from it. Thanks for the replies, you've eased my worries enough to where I'm just looking forward to trying FFXI out again.
Back to the economy... it is infalting at an incredible rate to help the supply and demand of gilsellers(ugh), but it is not impossible to play at low levels. Many low level equipment and weapons can be found in armor shops(sold by NPC's) and those prices will never change. All you have to do is learn how to buy stuff from NPC's and not depend on the Auction House for everything you own.
I played up until May of this year and picked the game back up again a couple weeks ago, I'll give you three items and their prices(quetzcoatal server) now and the prices when I left to let you know about the inflation.
Emporer's Hairpin 2,000,000(May) 3,800,000(Now)
Leaping Boots 1,000,000(May) 1,800,000(Now)
Scorpion Harness 4,000,000(May) 8,000,000(Now)
these 3 items are some of the most ellusive in the game to snag mainly becuase of their price...
Chu...Duty with Loyalty
Gi...Justice with Morality
Makoto...Sincerity with Actions
Rei...Courtesy with Politeness
Jin...Compassion with Benevolence
Yu...Courage with Cause
Meiyo...Honor with Honesty
It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. The price of EVERYTHING has increased. In some cases the basic farmed and mined item's prices have multiplied more than the more expensive items. Leaping Lizzy and the Emereror now drop RARE/EX versions of the boots and hairpin. The original versions are only available through the ah and bcnm. You can compare the ratio of cheap and expensive items from a year ago, and then today. You'll see that for the most part it's the same.
The hardest part of keeping up with the inflation is constantly having your money invested in a rising item. If you simply hold on to your gil you're losing money daily. Even if you're saving up for something, you want to have that money invested in several items that are inflating with the price of the item you're seeking. I personally try not to have more than 100k on me. If i find myself with more i buy something that is inflating.
