Like a year from now, xbox one gets a windows os update and suddenly so long as you hook up a keyboard and mouse you can play alloc ttitles with an xbox one. Is windows os xboxes ace in the hole?

I dont think most console gamers would want to play games with keyboard and mouse like me for most games that gives me an option to use gamepad when I play on my PC.  Pretty much everyone of my friends would never play a game with k/m.  I only use k/m when the game has no option and if I feel like it I would use xpadder which is what I did for GW2 and play that with a gamepad.

I dont think console gamers want to, until they experience the benefits. For instance as mmorpgs make thier way to consoles, the communication barrier is removed when you can simply whisper someone. The inventory management is much easier, some games just aren't designed for controllers and are much more enjoyable with kb and m. Dont get me wrong I love controllers and am very excited about ps4 with its mousepad, but the kb and mouse still gives the players especially in social environments a better experience. Now single player - give me a controller all day.

    That's not a realistic scenario.

Consoles are sold cheaper than PCs, because the console manufacturer gets monopoly to decide what programs and other things work on consoles. Every time you buy an Xbox game, the developers who made the game will have to pay some money to Microsoft for allowing that game to work on your console.

Windows doesn't have similar restrictions, and everyone is free to make, sell, and use programs without asking Microsoft's permission or paying legal fees to Microsoft. If Microsoft did put Windows on Xbox, they'd lose most of the profits generated by Xboxes.

Xbox One has 3 operating systems:

    1) highly customized Hyper-V OS, this is basicly hypervisor that runs other OSes. It's based on Hyper-V OS which is based Windows mini kernel and other complicated things.

    2) customized Windows 8 OS for apps, this is closest thing to actual Windows 8 OS. It will probaply support same or slightly customized version WinRT API making developers easier to port there programs from Windows 8 to Xbox One. It probaply won't have open Store.

    3) highly customized Windows 8 kernel based OS for games, this will be Windows kernel with DirectX with Xbox APIs.

So no, Xbox One doesn't have Windows OS, it has 3 of them.

Given how deeply unpopular win8 was it would be a huge negative factor, and it already has plenty of those in abundance. Now, if they put win 7 64 bit version of their OS on the Xbone, that would be different, well, probably not although after XP, its the only windows OS worth having image

Typical response by person who has no clue on Windows. Windows 8 is just Windows 7 with Modern UI. Most negative and totally idiotic comments were on Modern UI. Infact Windows 8 is much better in technical side than Windows 7. Besides Xbox One is same style tile system as Windows 8 and would be actually usable with Kinect. Asking people to hook mouse and keyboard to console makes as much sense as putting Linux in it.

With this new version of the Xbox, this could very well be where they are headed, but this could create all kinds of hacking issue I think.

One interesting thing is that when a person picks up an Ipad / Chrome-book / non-MS touch devices; they have no problems with the UI. Icons, slides, tiles etc.

BUT if they pick up the same device that has the word 'Windows' on it, the first thing they say is 'Why isn't there a start button? This is awful UI'.

The reason Win8 UI makes no sense is that it is bringing a 'Touch' UI to a desktop platform that doesn't have touch based input (at least not yet). Yes, that was an idiotic thing to do. Even MS accepts that with their Win 8.1 release.
