Well now that i can't play 10 to 16 hours a day like i did during first week of launch when i was on vacation, i'm finding the game very considerate to the casual player. Overall i got in about 6 hours last week and enjoyed every minute of it. It's such a pleasure to sit down and play this game for an hour, so if you're a casual this game is perfect for you. There is so much entertainment value to be had.

So this leads me to my question. I created 3 toons and did each starting area up to level 10/11 until i got them into the inn. Each area was an unique amazing experience, totally worth it. However when i got to the point with my main to go to the other cities i thought maybe i shouldn't have but when all was done and said i was really glad i did as i fully got the new feel for those areas. When i had to go there for my quest i didn't have to explore, i knew what was what and wasn't tempted to start digging into all those quests as i had done all of them on other toons and will need for alts on my main.

OK so the question? Is there really any reason to have real alts, i always read "you can do everything with one toon" and took that with a grain of salt, i had no idea how literal that statement was. So now with an extreme limitation on the amount i can play i'm thinking those alts will be enjoying the inn for a very, very long time unless there is some compelling reason to use them. Which i can't really seem to find outside of running the story again.

Umm, I guess if you are a big market player, having alts can give you more storage / retainers to sell stuff with.  But that is about the only reason I could see using an alt for.

That is the same question that I had! I made 2 alts, but everyone has been telling me that you can take on as many jobs as you like on one character....This would really seem to say that there is absolutely no need for alts in this game, correct? I haven't leveled too far yet, so I haven't been able to put this to the test. I have only leveled my main to 21 and a second job to 14.  I really hope that we can do everything on one toon because that would really be awesome!

You literally can, i imagine the only problem would be quests will start to up dry up on your 4th?

Aside from what you said about the first handful of quests being different not really. I am assuming certain NPCs will act differently towards you depending on your starting area. For example I started in Gridania and Yda and Papalymo are much friendlier towards me compared to the other Scions and make a few remarks now and again that I am assuming wouldn't be made towards a player who did not start in Gridania.

Gameplay wise you really can do everything with one character and having multiple Alts will just hold you back an example the amount of time you spent getting that Alts main class to 20 you could have spent getting your Main's Leatherworking/Armoursmithing/Weaving or Carpentry/Alchemy/Blacksmithing to 30-40 to help with your armour and weapons.

Seeing as you've done those quests now I would just stick with your Main or if you actually prefer one of your Alts more stick with them it will save you a lot of pointless hassle.

yep !for me it is perfect?if you are in your 20s you might feel otherwise.but if your 30 plus ?don't be shy,you get plenty of time to react.I mean it!even if you are 90year old YOU CAN PLAY THIS GAME AGAINST A CHAMPION OF ONLINE GAMING AND GET TO WIN.the vast majority of other game can't brag about this.and with it being avail on ps3 and ps4?mmi don't see any reason not to enjoy this while arguing about the color of her or his hair!

Yeah that would make sense, I guess if you were really into all the jobs on one toon you could just do fates or something or hunting logs!

Alts have really limited utility, even as storage or market mules.

That's because there is no way to pass anything directly to an alt. You can only do it via another player (or if you have 2 accounts subbed).

To send someone an email, they have to be on your friends list.

To add someone to your friends list, they have to be logged-in to the game when you add them.

You can only login one character at a time on your own account, therefore you can never add your alt to your friends list...

Oh other reason for Alt's would be for people heavily into role playing I suppose. Also having Alt's as pack mules does not work unless you have a friend to trade the items to the Alt for you because you can't add someone as a friend unless they are online at the same time as you, or that's what I've noticed someone correct me if I am wrong, meaning you are unable to mail your Alt's items to then put into their storage because you can only send mail to people on your friends list.

Correct. There is no real good reason to ever have an alt. Besides small things like someone mentioned, using one for mule space (retainer), you really can do everything on one toon. You are actually better off, because the more classes you level, the more cross-class skills you unlock, and you get to learn the other classes abilities, which can be helpful even on your main, to know what other classes are capable of and know thier skills when you see them.

Of course, you do run into the issue of running out of quests, but theres always FATE farming, or just doing dungeon runs. You also have your Leve quests, which if you dont use on your main class to level, can add up pretty quickly. (Im working on my 3rd 50 now, and just started using Leves because they capped at 100, lol). I usually am an altoholic in most MMOs, but I found my need for flaxibility to be more than compensated on one class, doing multiclassing. I found I actually enjoy the other classes even more, because they are adding to my main with every cross-class skill i unlock. Its almost as if you are penalizing yourself by having alts, and doing your "alt" classes on different characters.

No regrets, i thoroughly enjoyed each starting zone, but i gotta say, if i didn't have so much time to do so as i did i'm pretty sure i'd look back and feel like that was a waste of time leveling those alts. There is no real benefit or reason, yet you can make like 8 per server?

The only reason for an alt would be to experience any story differences between each of the starting areas, the aesthetic difference of having a different character, and of course, any content differences between the grand companies.  That, and of course, having additional retainer/storage space.

i know this wasnt the primary subject of this post, but i like to ask something about this, if u dont mind  :)

I like to try FFXIV ARR (as soon all the problems are solve) but 1st i like to know how the game is to a player that never knows when is possible to play and how long will stay online.

I make the question this way, and dont mentioned "casual player", because my main problema nowdays is when i logg i dont know if it is for 10min or 3h. So get a "fixed" group in mmos it as been a nigthmare to me and is the main reason why i play them (irony)   :(

So, in your personal opinion, i still can enjoy the game without get a "fixed" group of players to play together?

Thx and sorry posting the question here, Husvik  :)

As a major altholoc, I say no.

You could go with different races, genders, appearance for different looks but that's about all you gain.

There's too many benefits to doing it all on one character.  It's like having tons of account bound features with even less hassle.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

With some exceptions, my average play time is somewhere in the 1-3 hrs a day range.

Most stuff can be done alone.  There are 3 instances around lvl 15-18 that you'll be doing for the story.  Those avg about 1 hrs a piece and are group oriented.  I've had better luck creating a group via shout that the duty finder.  It works out a bit faster.  Most times I have a capable PUG in less than 10 minutes.

I can't speak for all the later stuff yet, I'm just not that high.  I've been having fun. My current state of life has me being overly casual for my tastes.

There are no real limits placed for doing everything on one character, however it will be a grind. if you are the type of player who has a class in mind that you wish to play end game, then yes, make a character and do that. doing everything on one toon is hard for some people because the quests do not repeat. So, the questing experience dwindles further and further the more jobs you undertake. As such, this becomes a grind and big time investment.

Myself I purposely skipped a lot of quests I had out leveled (from doing random FATEs, dungeons, story etc). As such I have been able to level 4 other jobs just fine without a constant grind hindering me.

So if you are playing casual, do your two main jobs then relax and level the others at your leisure :)

Only reason for alts in this game is just for characters. If for example you have a huge badass Warrior swinging his big axe around yet dont feel quite right when you want to play him as a healer in a white dress... make an alt thats better suited for it. Some people like it more that way and you are able to. Of course, youll have to pay the full $15 monthly charge for that one.

Thats about it though, they dont really work as mules since apparently you can mail things to your alts.
  • KanethKaneth Member RarePosts: 2,286

I too am an altoholic, and I don't see much reason to roll an actual alt with the exception of roleplaying. Even though the "quests" dry up, you still have Class Quests, FATEs, Hunting Logs, Levequests, and Dungeons to level up any subsequent class. Considering you get an xp boost based upon the level difference between your highest level class and the level of your current class, the first few levels tend to blow by anyhow. Actually, as a level 24 pug I decided to switch to Marauder to tank and the first 18 levels blew by doing only the Hunting Log and a limited number of FATEs and my Class Quests, not to mention the Mog Cap xp boost for the first 10 levels.

All-in-all the game is set up in such a way that it's highly beneficial to not have alts, not to mention it saves you a couple of bucks per month, not a big deal but still. I signed up for the 1 character sub, but I'll up it if I feel the need to play another race.

This pretty much what i wanted to post, just be sure you have about an hour when you need to group. I log in sometimes and turns out i can't play as long as i like but in 10 minutes you could probably do a quest or two, some are very short and sweet.

I'm new to FF mmo's, played a couple original console ones and gotta say that the ff world makes this feel so refreshingly new.

    You'll be fine.
