Economy revolves around an inverted decay system. Kind of brilliant.

So we all know the decay system: use gear til it breaks and go buy a replacement.

In FFXIV, however, the decay system is inverted. You equip your gear, and as you use it, it becomes increasingly spirit bonded working its way up to 100%. Once you reach 100%, that gear can be broken down into materia which can be put into sockets on other gear. The old gear is gone, and one socket is filled on the new gear. Standard number of sockets per item is two. So you will be taking two pieces of gear to 100% in order to achieve one fully socketed other piece of gear.

This will create a perpetual sellers market since the number of sockets always outnumbers the number of gear slots 2 to 1 at minimum.

Given that carpenter, leatherworker, goldsmith, armorsmith, blacksmith, and weaver all make various weapons and armor, I dont think you will ever run out of customers.

Consider the meta game here. A new patch comes out that introduces a new raid and subsequently a new tier of gear. The trickle down from that single implementation triggers a crafting chain that spans every crafting and gathering profession (including the two consumable crafting profs culinarian and alchemy for buffing the new content).

So in essence, adding a gear treadmill kickstarts the entire economy and really gives everyone something to do outside of the raid itself. There will probably be people who just grind fates for spirit bonding gear in order to sell the materia which will in turn provide for the raiders, who both in turn purchase from crafters.

It reminds me a bit of SWG wherein I had crates of rifles and lances and standard gear which I used day to day. And then I had my uber gear I used on special occasions or pvp. Poeple will have their standard gear they have on, constantly working on stocking up their spirit bond stash and during raids or pvp will don their best set.

Its actually a pretty ingenious system. I can't wait til its all rolling.

That sounds as a very good system how long do you have to use the item?

    And it's player determined.

If my HQ, full +5 materia Weavers hat hits full spiritbond I can ignore it. I am not required to convert it.

It is brilliant....like you said, I can't wait to see it at its peak...will definitely add an entirely new aspect to the game.

Thats a good point. It is completely voluntary unlike a standard decay system which eventually breaks your gear to uselessness. On the other hand, this system allows for players to decide if and when they want to participate in said system.

Materia can also be removed from gear after you done a quest with the Goblin in Thanalan. This will add more posibilites to switch up gear and stats depending on content and usage and of cause in turn create more demand for gear to spirit bond and convert.

The system is rock solid and worked pretty much the same in 1.0 with slight changes and some added features for 2.0

Thanks for the explanation. It does sound wonderful. I think this pretty much made my mind about buying the game. I suppose the only question now is when. Are the servers OK already? If so, I can buy a digital copy right away.

i am lvl 45 blacksmith 36 paladin and i have more than 350k right now because I am enjoying and actually  care about the crafting market in the game right now. I'm not even trying that hard to make money. lvl 50 people having problems with gear repair because all they do is rush to 50 then grind/wipe at endgame dungeons all day long. all i have to say is... LOL.

As for people making alts to get quest money... LOL again.

That's because the people who are at lvl 50 already, for the most part, are the ones who blazed through the content to reach "endgame." It's kind of funny actually because most people have been leveling a combat class first to get through their story and hit all the milestones (chocobo etc.), and the crafters haven't caught up yet. Once the crafters hit lvl 50 they will be able to do the gear repair etc.

As for fishing, there are some fish that can be cooked, others can be used for alchemy (fish oil) etc.. It's just a matter of knowing what people need at this point in the game. I've made quite a bit of money just selling stacks of princess trout because low lvl cooks have been buying it up like crazy. You just have to know the market like in any other game with an auction house system that's only been out for a few weeks.

How much of an economy can you have when over 90% of the players haven't hit lvl 50 on any class yet?

OP: I totally agree and think that you worded this thread wonderfully.  Excellent job explaining the system. Well done. image

this game is built around dungeon grinding, and you use like 1000-2000 gill in repairs for each dungeon.  yes its true.  so they need to fix that ASAP.  I harvest, craft and sell it.

The crafting just breaks me even cuz of my dungeon grinding because of REPAIRS.  Not sure if they meant to do this, but this is how it is.

i have things called guild/linkshells where members have multiple lvl 50s in crafting and battle, and they like to talk about/ among other things, the lvl 50 idiots who dont have any money because they are just wiping at dungeons all day long.  A

Also, dont talk like you actually know anything, you made a lvl 45 fisher and you can't even make any money out of it, why dont you just do us all a favor and uninstall the game.

You do know crafters can repair gear right?  I imagine it's cheaper than going to an NPC too otherwise it wouldn't make sense to even have it in game.
