Strange to watch all this happen around those of us that can't even find the game for sale anywhere. Starting to get to the point where I'm going to stop following news about  it and move on.

However, As for festivals. Only ones I ever cared about were pre-f2p lotro events.

I think it is more of a Japanese thing to have these bondage looking swimsuits and as we know, SE does not really care about its NA consumers like they do the Japanese consumers.

The best way to describe how I feel on this issue is to refer to the film The Nightmare Before Christmas. For those who have seen it (and those who haven't, SHAME ON YOU), remember how Jack Skellington felt in the beginning? Halloween was the same thing, over and over again, and though he clearly still loved it very much, there was definitely a longing for something different.

That's my take on seasonal / holiday events in MMOs. They can be a ton of fun, but the devs need to be involved in order to keep things fresh. WoW's got a couple of really good ones, but at this point they've been the same thing for years. Most people have all the little novelty rewards by now, and participation is pretty much mechanical in nature at this point (for those that still bother). There's no sense of excitement as one approaches, and in some cases they're even viewed as a nuisance.

When starting / stopping a seasonal event is effectively reduced to flipping switch on the server, there's a problem. They should be engaging and fun for both the devs and the players.

The one in FFXIV right now is okay. It's just a little basic, and without an appearance tab currently in the game, getting any / all the costumes can seem like a bit of a waste (protip: You can store them in your inn room's armoire). For a basic 'filler' event at the end of the summer, it's not bad. Hopefully next year they'll expand it a bit more.

I personally hate seasonal events even when they started in EQ1 and Vanguard. LOTRO is an ok mmo for a free to play game, but one thing that really makes me quit each time I try to play it is the way you are pushed into doing the seasonal events.

They make it so no matter where you go in the world to pick up quests there is always one npc that will eventually lead to these silly set of quests when I just want to play the game as it is meant to be played.

Keep them out of mmo's or create lore friendly seasonal events rather than celebrate christmas and easter look to the calendar from the game world and make their own up. Party hats and silly costumes no thanks. Keep them out of my game.

In most games I play seasonal events are far too grindy.  Seasonal event bosses in WoW are great, but the daily quests are too much of a grind fest.  I like seasonal costumes as long as they are limited to the season.  Pets and mounts on the other hand I'd rather weren't limited.

Really IMHO having a little something extra to do in these events is great, things were quest chains and story are told are similarly awesome.  When you have a quest currency that needs to be daily farmed or farmed from mobs it gets grindy and boring.

Oh so it started already? I did saw the splash but like others i saw nothing in game hinting that it had started. I play in Grandia, stuffed away deep in the forest, and nothing there says there is a summer event going on and where to go to for that. Now i know.

As much as I like FFXIV the event is disappointing and not being able to store the items in the inn chest is pretty crappy too.

I don't mind the effortless event rewards as long as they are exclusive to it's time and wont be given away again, so another item for next summer event? A reward for being there I guess.

Why do you guys prefer grind fest events? do you really prefer to have to repeat the FATE gazillion times before you can enjoy your reward?

I liked the idea that I DON'T HAVE to grind like a crazy or log in everyday to receive the event item. Many other MMOs does this and its not fun after some time to only guarantee gaining the reward at the end. But again its me.

I cant really blame them on the bad event actually, I think they had been trying to solve the issues that everyone is having. Maybe they made this event in a hurry and wanna let us enjoy some.. :)

    PERFECT EVENT!!!

I'm extremely wishy washy on events, for the most part I'd rather they did not exist due to the completionist or get event items while it's on, in me. While part of me appreciates the distraction, the change of pace, the good feeling they can bring.

Other mmo's just stop, enough, to much event, then you have GW2 which take it to the extreme so much so it was a stupid level, i literally stopped playing that game due to the constant mega expansion sized events. I JUST WANT TO PLAY THE F'in GAME!

When i read about the FFXIV:ARR event i was come on already, f@ck now i'm going to have to waste time on this, i just want to play the game ffs.

Went and did a couple fates and voila DONE, got all the items and back playing the game, PERFECT i tell you, PERFECT!!!

THANK YOU - SE - THANK YOU!

Once again SE solidifies my faith in this MMO, and what i said the moment i logged in, this going to be a sweet ride for the next several years.

Ok, so the event is a bit thin but then it comes just 2 weeks after tough launch. I think I will cut them some slack this time around.

    All die, so die well.

The only seasonal event I ever enjoyed was the EQ1 Halloween events..mainly because the event was server wide and usually injected an unpredictable freshness to the zones.  Seems like festivals in other MMOs are confined to a few set areas with predictable activities.

Ya, I found that odd and disappointing too. I mean...isn't that what the chest in your Inn is for??

The event was a bit of a damp squid compared to other games but the game has just released and had numerous issues on launch.  Hopefully the next event will have more depth and fun activities to enjoy.
