I've been trying out different classes and there seems to be a "tilt" toward specific races.
How much does racial aspects matter in FFXIV?
For example: say someone wants to roll a Pugilist, but chooses the Hellsguard (Roegaden) for their race.
Compared to some other races, the Hellsguard falls behind in strength, and leans toward being a magic use class.
Are you being gimped playing the Hellsguard race in a melee class?
...or would you be better off playing as a Sea Wolf?

By the time you reach higher levels, it looks as though it would make little difference.
The only way you can gimp yourself race-wise is to choose Lalafell. If you do this, you have simply given up your dignity! :P
waddle waddle waddle!
Hahahaha !
Just wait until the PVP patch arrives. Watch the hordes of Lala's queuing for PVP...
Pick the race that looks cool to you.
The differences in starting stats will be negligible at endgame and will have even less impact as the gear tiers and progression ramp up.
Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.
It matters a ton, the cuteness factor of Lalafell by far outmatches any other races and you can't look as strong as those big blue guys I keep forgetting the name of. Statwise, I think its minimal even though there are stat bonuses/penalties depending on the race you pick but the differentials are 1's, 2's and maybe 3's at the most so fairly minimal but the bonuses are still there if you are an insane min/maxer and prefer to focus your character down very specific paths.
Being harder to be spotted and clicked by other players is a huge advantage...
That was a joke.
Race only matters for looks.
There is a variance on stat distribution between races and their tribes. Seems every race has a melee stat tribe and a magic stat tribe.
Difference is like one or two stats between the two. Over the long run that adds up to no advantage.
Also take care in selecting your character voice. My character makes a constipation/dry heave sound effect every attack because I didn't bother to really try out the different voice options on different activities that It allows you to do in character creation
In some cases, races matters a tiny bit, such as, seawolf has 23 vit and lalafell has 17, that's quite a difference for early game, if your main job will be Paladin.
But since the game pretty much assumes that you will play all jobs with one character (one race), you should really stop thinking about min-maxing a single job and going only for the looks, imo.
Midlanders have the best all around stats, for instance.
One word of advice, though: I wasted my Fantasia to switch to Roegadyn from Midlander and now can't wait to get another fantasia to switch back because in dungeons I sometimes can hardly see what I am doing because of how HUGE my character is. He also has clipping issues while sitting on some chairs in random taverns and such.

The stat difference between the races is the exact same at lvl 50 as it is at lvl 1. The difference does not scale with lvls. When a race has 3 strength less than the rest they will still only have 3 strength less at 50. So in theory you might notice the difference at low lvl, but the game is so easy at low lvl that you would not notice it unless you go out of your way with number crunching.
So pick the race you like the looks, animation and overall feel of, the stat difference is too small to notice.
This would be true save for the fact it's a video game.
Most us have mastered the L1-l2 directional targeting and do NOT click.
And of course the big ass name plate saying "SirSMokes Alot"
I'm pretty goddamned sure I'm going to see them.
It's not my TV is THAT small.
