Hey peepz of the internet, so I usually post on Pub @ MMORPG.com, but I have been diseased with easily the slowest internet connection a real gamer has ever dealt with, It's a crippling, sad speed that has on many an occasion made me want to punch through a tempered steel door.
I have 120-180 max KBps I literally have just over a tenth of a MB per sec download. Downloading MMORPG games is a nightmare if it's anywhere over a gig. It takes days. NO joke.
I challenge you to achieve a slower rate than this, and whoever can help me out in maximizing, even telling me what to go buy would be a fucking messiah. For the 16 years I've lived in this house, I have always had this speed. I don't know what to do about it. We changed internet types several times. I feel hopeless.

It could be dial-up
Who is your ISP? What country? What type of connection? DSL/Cable/Sat/whatever, and what is the advertised speed?
If he's got his bits and bytes correct then he currently has a 1.5mbps connection which is probably basic ADSL service. If he's at or beyond the 15,000+ foot limit of ADSL from the Central Office, it is unlikely that he will get faster unless he goes cable.

Have you tried wireless connection?
Could very well be that a cellular data plan may have faster speeds. The trick is getting one with a data cap you can live with.
Boycotting EA. Why? They suck, even moreso since 2008.
Your options are limited. No software can make your internet go faster than it is able to do. You can, however, make better use of the bandwidth you do have. Firewall programs and traffic shaping programs can help ensure the applications you need bandwidth for get priority.
NetBalancer is designed for traffic shaping, and can help pinpoint programs which are consuming too much of your limited bandwidth. The free version is limited to five "rules" which may or may not be enough for you.
Comodo personal firewall is free and allows you to block applications, but did not have traffic shaping last time I used it.
Windows built-in firewall may have some useful tools as well.
One major source of bandwidth problems can come from malware. Make sure your PC doesn't have adware, spyware, or other software on it which may be downloading ads or transmitting data and hogging your bandwidth. A good program to check for adware is adwcleaner ( link ). If you don't have a virus scanner, get a free one from Microsoft. It is called Security Essentials and is available for Windows Vista and later, I think. Windows 8 includes it.
Another option for you might be to download things from a public internet connection. You will need a laptop unless you are willing to lug around a desktop and get strange looks (and possibly kicked out) when you plug it in. Most MMOs won't redownload the main files if they are already on your hard drive, so you can simply copy them from your portable computer to your main PC.
Definitely share your location with us and tell us what provider you are using now and what speed they advertise.
How so?
From my own experiance, we have wifi, did try it a few times but I never get the speed I get when lined.
Wifi I get near 100 Mbps, cable (fiber) between 150/175 Mbps. We do have the tv, our phone's and laptops on WiFi, but my gaming system is wired due to more power in speed.
To OP: As you have seen this topics turns into speculations unless you supply us with more info like Rynet asked. Perhaps we might be better help to you when you provide more info.
Vrika might be referring to a wireless cellular link. Some areas of the US have these as an option for a primary household internet connection. I used one when I was in Texas. I got decent speeds and pings, considering it was wireless. I did not have any data limit.
Who is your ISP?
What is the rated speed you are currently paying for?
Are you connected via hardline (ethernet) or wifi?
If Wifi, what version router you running? b/g/n?
We need more information in order to give you better suggestions.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
If you are using a Wireless Carrier for an ISP, than you should reset the receiver at least once a day. What ends up happening is if a cell tower is inundated with traffic it will push off connections to another close by tower. If you do not reset your receiver, you will remain connected to said tower. This phenomena happens a lot with cell phones as you are traveling. Once you reach your destination you should reset your cellphone to connect to the nearest tower.
If you are using a Cable or DSL line than its very possible your modem is no longer useful. If its been 16 years with the same connection and you are on cable, your modem has probably been phased out as more companies adopt strictly DOCSIS 3.0 and make the leap to IPv6. The proper troubleshooting of this issue I would need to know exactly what ISP and type of internet you are using. If its Cable I can tell you a lot about why your connection is suddenly slow.
There is also the possibility your ISP started throttling certain ports in an attempt to limit peer to peer downloading like Bit Torrent. This port is usually 80 that almost all Internet Games use. So there is a big possibility that you are being detected as using port 80 so the ISP throttles your connection.
Finally there is the probability whoever pays for the internet decided to downgrade considering we are in a period of high actual inflation.
I can top that.
Casair Internet, Stanton Michigan. Original "1mb" wireless Service. 120k download maximum (usually 50-90k), 50 kb upload maximum (usually 25k ish). They got $27 million grant from the Federal Government to upgrade their service, problem is Casair's timetable to do that won't get my service upgraded until 2015 thereabouts.
and my ISP thinks they are state of the art. Hillbillies.
Yes I play MMOs with this,. not easy but I manage. Gameplay isn't bad, but Downloads eewww.... grab your box and go to a friend or family that has Charter Cable or something like that. Much better to deal with that hassle than to watch a 20gb d/l to take a week of my computer running all night to finish.
There is no real "maximizing" for this, it's just as slow as it looks, only other option is dailup, and that is a step down, not up. (ATT dsl not in area, no Charter Cable or other BB and TV provider).
Been doing this for years. Welcome to the club. I hope you get out soon. (for your sake).
I meant connecting to internet through mobile phone network, or possible through some other wireless network available in his area. I don't live in USA so I'm not familiar with what's used in there, but 120 - 180 KBs sounds so slow that a mobile phone network might be faster than what he's got.
Where I live (in Finland) you could buy an USB stick acting as a 3G receiver, a dedicated antenna if you live far from nearest mobile mast, and connect to UMTS 900 network with max speed of 21 Mbit/s. Even if the real speed is way below 21 Mbit/s, it's possible to get more than what the OP currently has.
I can top that: Connecting through EDGE network in Finland, with good luck I was able to get 22 KB.
That was already a few years ago, now I've got 100 Mbps connection.

This shows about what we have available in the states, we are a few years behind Europe as far as Cellular goes. We do have the USB dongles, we have Ceullar modems that act as WiFi hotspots, and most smart phones will tether and allow you to share the data plan
Speed does depend a lot on location and other factors, but yeah, Edge will be slower (it's just barely faster than dialup), 3G will range from roughly equal to a bit more than double, and 4G/LTE would be 3-10x faster.
The biggest problem with Cellular in the US are data caps. A starter plan will typically cap out at around 250-500Mb/month. That's fine for playing games, but god help you if you need to download a patch or watch any YouTube How-Tos. The overage charges tend to be pretty steep.
You can upgrade to around 2-4Gb/month plans, and there are some "unlimited" plans that give you high speed for the first 1-2Gb and then just throttle your speed after that. That gives you more wiggle room, but if you wanted to download a new title, those are often in the 5-10G range... I guess you can always drive down to Starbucks or McD's and mooch their free WiFi to download the stuff, then play at home, but that's not terribly convenient.
And if your stuck in the boondocks, or in a dead spot, your still out of luck anyway.
