"Underwhelmed" is a really good word to describe how I felt, too. I agree and I've put this game aside for now. I've lost a great deal of interest in playing SoG or even in having an invite to the official DnL beta. I'll check back, but I have a feeling it'll be in development for quite a while. It appears dated to me but, if you look at DAoC, it's possible to update that look a great deal. Combat, however, is another thing entirely. Unless they have a whole different combat system already done and it's just not uploaded yet, I can't see how I could ever want to play. Of course, I've not seen the crafting or PvP or anything like that, but I don't imagine it would be ready, either. If it were, they would have included it in SoG, no?
Hop into the DDO stress test and you'll quickly see why SoG is so horrible. DDO has run great for me all night with fairly minor lag considering the number of people playing. Everything feels complete just as it should at this stage in development.
SoG is NOT a beta. It's supposed to be a COMPLETE mini game based on DnL technology/content. It's supposed to be a storyline that leads into DnL release. From all the posts I've been reading, SoG is far from complete and fully functional. I wouldn't expect 100% perfection, but SoG is a mess.
Has nobody any clue about what NP3 has been saying over and over again ? Do some people actually know how to read and visited the DnL website more than once and for other purpose than subscribing to the SoG ? So... mark my words :
SoG is not a beta
A) Dev talk : SoG will be a way to thank long time fans
Facts : they went with a "first in / first served" basis. Some are registered on forum since 2002-2003 with more than 1k posts and didn't get a SoG account while some people with a postcount of 1, registered since december 2005 got in.
Conclusion : Blatant lie.
Dev talk : SoG is not a beta version of DnL. It is a fully functional game.
Facts : Obviously, it is a re-compiled version of the beta (cross-checked with people in beta). It even has the same build number. As for the "fully functional"... ...well, there are enough threads with bugs reports for the lucky ones who were at home while servers were up.
Conclusion : Lie again. Seems NP3 was at the same online community management courses than the people at SOE.

DnL at best is going to become a nichegame like Horizons.
To bad because DnL sounded like they had some good ideas, but it seems like their company is to small and lacks the funds to finish their product.
Then its called reviving.
We all have seen the ingame movies whith weather systems and pvp system(groups fighting) and movies that groups are fighting BIG mobs.
And i think they HAVE everything ready but only need to debug a LOOOOOT of things.
And why should they put soowh much of DnL inside SoG would be kinda stupid if you ask me.
They wanna let us "taste"from the game.
And about the graphics/animation and sounds i think i gonna Quote something now that alot of people NEVER KNEW but i said it so many times more already.
I quote here THE solution for graphics inside DnL:
LOS ANGELES CONVENTION CENTER, KENTIA HALL / BOOTH 6001 – 18th May 2005 -- SnailGame announces the acquisition of the license & distribution rights of the upcoming MMORPG "Dark & Light" for The Great China Division (Including mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong). SnailGame and the publisher Farlan Entertainment agreed co-operate to make "Dark & Light" more suitable for Asia players, with specific graphic designs, scenario & quest, etc.
According to the revenue sharing agreement between SnailGame and the publisher, the amount of the deal exceeds 3 million EUR.
About SnailGame:
SnailGame Entertainment, established in September 2000, is the first online game developer in China. Currently SnailGame has 400 staff members with over 20 sales offices in China, with experienced game development team & strong marketing, sales & distribution network. SnailGame, a leading online game developer and publisher, has developed three MMORPG: Voyage Century, Intron Plan (Robots online), Robber & merchant.
6 months from now, there are gonna be no login problems, the crashes aren't going to be there (well not as bad) and server disconnects will be a thing of the past. I'm not saying they will be perfect, just nobody will be talking about them.
The issues that need resolving for the game to take off will, from the launch are
1. Graphics The graphics (non landscape) are crap, I believe are gonna be handled more by snailgame than NC3 themselves (please tell me if I'm wrong). If this is the case, then a large company with a lot of resources behind them, should easily turn around the graghics from now till release. This frees up the developers for more pressing matters
2. Quests Gary Gygax is involved in these (Not sure if this is ingame of GM quests). Regardless, they have a quest system already built in. It don't work but there is a basis already in. 6 Months to get something up and running. Don't see why not. As long as they are newbie friendly (get you into the game), as D&L is not just geared towards quests or PvE like a vast majority of the genre is. they just need to be good enough.
3. Combat Well, we can all see just how awful the combat it at the moment. Although not too riviting in the first place, the mobs, mob AI, combat animations, UI and more importment the feel of it is all wrong. The mobs feel like UOs Mobbs (static and having no AI). This is something that has to be fixed. I've not even tryed the PvP part yet, but can imagine it being laughable. 6 months is a long time to get something done about this.
If these 3 can be sorted out for the release of D&L then things will definitly be looking good. Add in the RvR (which I've not tried yet) and the possibility of trading & crafting. Overall it still looks promising.
All SoG is saying to me, is they have a base to move on from. It does seem capable of handleing a hell of a lot of people all at once. Just will NC3 manage to make it look polished, thats the main question.

Let me guess you didnt get a key into SoG and now you want to let the world know that your too good for this game? Negative nanny, in 6 months this game wont even look the same not to mention Ive heard the beta is secret and has wayyy more content then SoG. Ive heard that SoG isnt even half of DnL but the closed beta people are the ones testing all of the good content (wayy more then SoG has)

From what I've heard, you are effectivly playing what was beta. Don't beleive that the current beta is anymore different to what you have now.
Let me tell you my vieuw of it again(as programmer 2)
I dont know if you guys EVER made a program whith a lot of procces/systems that were using different par tof memory and their own threads(to keep it simple).
I guess not.
What they probably did(its just a specualtion like everyone does because no-one is SURE exept the devs of NPcube) is getting the current beta(when they started making SoG) and just ripped some functions out of it. I tell you from experiance is that some other functions just DONT WORK if you do that even when you programmed them sapparated.
Thats why SoG is soooowh unstable now. They just ripped off some essential pieces.
If they wanted to give us a "taste" of it to whet our appetite, they are seriously demented by giving us what they did. All it's done is scare people away. I just can't wrap my head around how the developers of DnL could look at that mess and figure it's a GOOD thing for people to see. You'd think they'd know better than anyone how awful that was! It looked terrible, my character looked terrible, she moved terrible....
I"m sorry, Bertha... I snarfed up one of those freebie SoG keys and I have to agree with Pirrg. Most of the people who are upset are people who not only have an SoG key, but paid $60 for the pleasure. Now, I'm not saying they should give up all hope but I don't think that $60 will serve them well... at least not in April. I'm ususlly pretty positive about what professional people can do, even in a short amount of time, but I have to say... I have very negative feelings about where this game will be in four months.
Why would they "rip" some functions out of it, Deathburn, and give us what is essentially rubbish? Did they WANT us to see their game with it's trousers down? Because that's what I saw... a big hairy butt mooning me and saying, " neener neener!" Maybe they thought we'd feel sorry for them and support the game to cheer them up.
Like people are saying... this game isn't new. I've been following it for years, at least since 2003. If it's taken that long and they present us with what I saw, I have my doubts that they'll be able to keep my interest another 3 years. You never know though... this is the season for miracles, no?

get this through your skull: SoG, quite literally, is the current beta build. Most of the major bugs were found and reported 6-12 months ago in beta, by hundreds of testers submitting thousands of reports, and they never fixed them!! There is NO "miracle build" out there that has all of their supposed content and features. All of the login errors, dnlg.exe errors, character errors, mob spawn problems, graphics lameness, interface issues, etc etc, were reported over and over again by the beta testers. ALL of them... for over 2 years! ALL of the errors and problems still existed LAST WEEK in beta!
So why the heck do people still think that some "miracle build" exists? I just dont get it, and I really wish they would accept that it doesn't...for their sake and for the sake of those they keep convincing to think it exists.
wake up people, and move on. please and ty.
(the above is based upon "direct conversations" with multiple beta testers who shall remain nameless ).

And WHY THEY DID NOT IMPLENTED GRAPHICS YET?????????
Well very simple who would ever play dark elf if the High Elf is perfect shaped and looks just amazing
Just wait and as the title of this topics says: DnL going to be a great game!!!!
