Shroud of the Avatar: 48 hour Shroud Scene Jams Announced

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Shroud of the Avatar team has announced a new six week long contest called "48 hour Shroud Scene Jams". Each weekend beginning September 20th, fans of the game will be challenged with creating a scene based on information given by the developers and by using the Unity engine. Forty-eight hours will be granted for the creation and upload of the scene.

Rules:

  • We’ll provide some assets with each jam but you can also use any assets which we can easily license.  Unity store assets, free or purchased are fine.  We’ll have a section in our submission process for you to list what assets were used in the creation of your piece so we can purchase them if we decide to use your piece.  Custom created art is also fine as long as you are willing to grant us a free license to distribute the art with Shroud of the Avatar.

  • The final submission must be in the form of a Unity Package, run in Unity 4, and the upload must be started by 6PM on the Sunday after the start of the jam.  We’ll include a document detailing how to turn a scene into a Unity Package.  It might sound scary but it is really just a couple of clicks!

  • Any version of Unity is fine.  The free version will work fine.  You can use an older version of Unity if you choose to but we’ll only be testing the assets we distribute on Unity 4 and we’ll expect all submissions to work on Unity 4.

Read all of the details, including the awesome prize packages, on the Shroud of the Avatar site.

I stopped following this game and withdrew my support once I realized that they are selling off houses and once the houses are all sold off there will be no more for people who didn't buy them once the game goes live. Crappy design decision, especially for a game like this. They had a whole video showing it off and lets just say it's an extremely important feature and people who have it over those who don't will have a huge and seemingly unfair advantage.

I feel exactly the same way. The whole affair is borderline bait-and-switch, and has really hammered home to me that the man responsible for the greatest CRPG series of all time is dead. Much as Darth Vader betrayed and murdered Anakin Skywalker, so has Richard Garriott done to Lord British. May he rest in peace.

I'm still waiting for Portalarium to respond to my refund request. I want no part of this pay-to-win garbage.

[mod edit] There are a limited number of pre-launch lots. Post paunch there will be many more, but yes limited.

As for financing, I think its great. Tired of EA (and other massive companies) ruining other peoples labor of love. Lightning might strike twice with this game, and the bar for success will be lower, so it might not get ruined for commercialization purposes... Got my fingers crossed.

As for a refund, before you can even donate it clearly states no refunds in any case, as they have allocated every $10.00 increment into the development.

There will not be "many more" not even "limited" lots for housing if they are all bought up unless the world is expanded. The way it is going if there are any plots for houses left it will be so expensive that only the 1% will be able to even afford it. You're going to be sorely disappointed if you actually believe you have a chance at getting a plot for housing without buying it with real money while it's available.

If a company is found to have misdirected the consumer about the direction of their product than there is grounds and reason for the consumer to be able to receive a refund. Never in the Kickstarter did I see "pay to win" as a highlighted feature of Shroud of the Avatar so I have a right to pursue a full refund for being misled and lied to about this product.

The game is going to have an expansion every year which doubles the land size. Housing is INITIALLY going to be limited because its a sandbox game, and they only have so much time to program land if they want to get the game on the shelves for the players. No one is being forced to buy a house.. its just an OPTION.. If you don't want to spend money on it, just wait a year for the next release when more land mass opens up. They have said from day one that to get it out fast housing will be initially limited but then with each expansion there will be a lot more aviliable.

Housing is a good way to help fund it and it is far from play to win..  I play a lot of LOTRO. I know MANY people in LOTRO that are top raiders in the game that don't own nor care about a house.. does that mean they do not enjoy the game or are high end players? Hmm, well, actually most of the high end raiders i know could care less about houses.

Personally I believe Shroud of the Avatar is going to be the game to get into. Being Created by Richard Garriott (Lord British), Starr Long (Lord Blackthorn), and the lead story writer is Tracy Hickman. There are other Dev's on the team that have worked with ultimas in the past or that worked on Ultima Online (Lum the Mad for instance) and its being hailed as the spiritual successor to Ultima Online. Go check it out at and hey, if you sign up, when it asks you who referred you do me a solid and use user id#147 as your refferal.

But give people a chance.. read up on it and really learn about it. Theres a lot of new innovation and out of the box thinking being done for this game.. which means there ARE things that you have to dig into a bit and learn about, because they haven't been done before. So if you just look at it for 2 minutes, your not going to grasp all the cool stuff being done (or understand it), and you wont be able to make informed opinions. If you become educated about the details and still don't like? hey that's cool..to each their own. But make educated opinions. Just my thoughts.

Pay to win? How can a house help you win???

Owning a house is a luxury. You get zero advantage over somebody on the battlefield. Read the description:

You're joking right? Housing from the description is a crafter's dream in Shroud of the Avatar. Anything that gives a player a huge advantage over others at a real world cost is considered pay to win. Thus the selling of housing plots is indeed pay to win.

    Here's the description again:

    • Having a permanent residence, a place to put down roots, to hang your helmet, to decorate to your taste, to invite your friends over to hang out.
This is merely a luxury and cool thing to have.

    • Provides a location for you to have a vendor to sell your wares.
You can sell your wares in plenty of other places I'm sure, which are likely even better options.

    • Provides a location to set up private crafting stations, saving you the trouble of visiting public crafting stations to produce your wares.
This may be a small advantage with crafting, fine I'll give you that. But actually we don't know yet how much easier this will make crafting-- like how far are public crafting stations from your items/resources? So I see this as a convenience at most and highly doubt it will alter the dynamics of the game in any meaningful way.

    • Plant your own gardens to grow whatever you need.
Again, in my view a convenience at most.

    • Dramatically increases your storage space. Your house can be filled with decorations, and you can place chests at your house to expand your player inventory.
More storage? Every MMO does this. This is nothing new.

Oh, and a final point-- although houses are limited, anybody can get a house without paying through the nose. And remember not everybody is going to be good on paying their taxes.

Bottom line is I just don't see this as flat-out Pay-to-win. Pay-to-win is when you can buy gear/weapons/items that give you an advantage over others. This is clearly NOT the case here.

Edit: I will note that what constitutes P2W is a very debatable topic. Where does one draw the line?
