Guess you're not that uber if you need help with that.

I voted "It's good but it needs work."  Because, well, it does.  And it isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

If I could play the game I think I would love it.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to stay in the game for more than a few minutes at a time, and that makes me hate it...

I wish they would re-think their stance on only having one "world" for everyone on the earth (China notwithstanding)... Maybe one world for each of the supported languages, i.e., English, French, German, etc... It's not that I don't want to play with the world, the concept sounds good to  me... but for technical/lag reasons maybe more than one world would be better...

Dunno really, those are just my thoughts atm... image

Well I logged in on Pioneer day and ran about a bit and got killed a couple of times but didn't do much else.  Graphics seemed ok and movement was alright but pretty laggy (loved the tumbling down hills bit though!).

I am not going to log in again until at least the middle of January in the hope that the issues that I have experienced and heard about from the less hysterical posters are resolved.  The devs probably have an easier time persuading me to stick with the game as this will be my back-up game and no other near release tickles my fancy (Conan looks very hot though) so I have no problem giving them some time and trust.

Edit: oh and one reason I want to play this game is the single world, as the other I play also has only one "server" and I think DnL will have a much larger community than that one.

For most people I think it will be the reverse.  The more they play the less they will like the game.  Riding a dragon is great fun but the novelty wears off.  I have been able to stay in the game for over an hour without crashing 3 or 4 times.  The combat is very bad.  Granted my highest character is only level 12 but it is possibly the worst combat of any game I have ever played.  There is nothing to do in this world except ride your dragon and fight.  Given that the fighting is awful people will grow bored quickly if given the chance to play.  I enjoyed my first few hours in the game. But I am becoming less and less eager to attempt to log on.  I would like to max a char out in level and give the game a good test.  Leveling seems easy if we could get a stable server I would guess it could be done in less than a week.  The hard part will be to keep convincing myself to keep coming back.  I am pretty persistent and I generally enjoy even the worst of games but I am guessing SoG will truly test my patience for bad games.

My guess is most people, fanboy or realist, will leave Garneth much faster than me.  The real question is how long until this game folds up tent.  Anyone have any thougts on the over/under.  My guess would be February or March for the games closure.  But, in theory they could keep the game alive forever by just keeping the website up and firing the devs.  The lack of devs would not make a noticable difference in the development pace and might improve the atmosphere of the official forums considerably.

Well it might be but I don't like to mention it as it attracts trolls. mosquitoes and Caldari scum.

overall i think the game is pretty good

combat can be a little odd... only way to fix that is to use the arrow to aggro them atm

the dnlg.exe crash error is simple to fix... IVE SAID IT MANY TIMES
^1. delete dnl.ini and dnl.cfg and do the full integrity check
^2. right click on your compass and deselect roads. do the same thing with the map (they are diff)

the graphics arent exactly the greatest thing but didnt every1 say that the graphics were not important? (they still look pretty good on /enginesetquality high)

i love flying my dragon, especially with this huge world to explore :D
^hold 0 on the numpad and press s to fly

i havent tried snow shielding yet ::::16::
^supposidly run down a slope and press space (you have 1 in your inventory when u create a char)

i have not gotten any bugs/crashes at all after i fixed the dnlg.exe
^just gota wait for the server to be patched lol ::::39::

the community ingame is a lot better than on the forums and everything... mostly all the trolls/dnl haters have already left or havent gotten in yet
    ^im the helpful 1 ingame :)

I was able to play for hours without disco on a few occasions.

To me it is everything the beta leaks said and worse. I am a demanding person though.

The UI is the worst I have ever used, nothing easy or intuitive about any of it.

Game play is choppy with average looking graphics.

The combat just doesn't feel right, it's not exciting, kind of clunky. Compared to CoH it is horrible.

    NCPs/MOBs few and far between.

I do not like this game, it is FAR from ready to be played.

I have removed every shred of it from my HD.

I am amazed and saddened that after 5 or so years of production this is the best they have to show.

I find humor in that they shut down the forums.

For those of you who like or continue to like after some more time in game, cool. I hope one day DnL can give to you what you hope for. But I have said on other forums charging money now was wrong.

I just ask all of you willing to stick it out (I will not be with you) Please don't pay these guys anymore money, In the long run I think it really hurts our community.

I will try to answer your question as best as I can.   It could be many things.  It could be the lack of interesting abilities, the combat engine being slightly off, the mobs moving during combat out of melee range, the camera angle and viewing problems, the repetitive eq1 style combat, the lack of thought involved, the general awkwardness. the lack of mob A1, lack of challenging encounters or maybe all of the above.

Combat has evolved since EQ1.  Daoc introducded styles or speciall attacks to the genre.  Daoc also added positional attacks, reactionary attacks (response to evade, block, etc),  and chain attacks.  Other games added stances such as Shadowbane.  FFXI brought us group special attacks.  Vanguard promises to bring us all of the this plus perception which looks pretty exciting at least in concept.  DnL rather than building on previous games takes a step backwards from interactive combat.  Yes it has styles but they appear to be just for mindless button mashing repeating over and over with little thought involved.

Now in all fairness I do not know how the classes abilities mix in combat.   It might be a lot more enjoyable in a group.  But from everything I have seen in the game it is very doubtful.   Everything seems to be randomly thrown togther to make a game rather than to make a good game.  Everything is akward, amatuerish and unprofessional.

Can they fix it and make it better?  Yes they can.  Will they?  I doubt it as there to much that needs fixing.  Horizons is probably the best example of a game in this position although Horizons in beta didn't have anywhere near the amount of problems that SoG had..  In beta it was well known the combat was awful.  David Bowman even acknowledged as much and said it would be totally redone before release.  They didn't have the time as they were constantly putting out fires.  The same analogy applies to dnl.  They have to build an entire game from the ground up.  They have a world and a flight simulator and nothing else.  Everything else in the game needs to be redone, then fixed and polished.  From the UI, to the combat system, to crafting and so on.  Will they have time?  My guess is a dev team that cannot keep a website up will have a very difficult time making this game just stable.  To ask them to add or fix content is probably beyond thier abilities.

Getting back to the combat problems.  DnL rathe rather than making combat into a 3rd or 4th generation game has made it similar to a free game or eq1 style combat.   Where combat is for the most part thoughtless and non inetractive like Lineange II type combat.  DnL lacks smoothness and has mechanical and physical problems which makes it seem much worse than these other games.  Justice Potter Stewart is famous for his definition of obsenity.  He said "I know it when I see it."  I feel the same way abouyt combat and a game.  I know it when I see it.  Its more a feeling.  Combat here lacks the thought, fun, smoothness and interactivity of other games.   It gets repetitive for me very fast.  I know this is vague and not a very good definition.  But it just isn't fun.   Maybe this will change as we level up.  Hopefully it will.

well i see this game having alot of potenial, and honestly i think the game will survive even without us players at first becuase it will have a strong europian base and thank god for that. funny thing a couple peeps mentioned eve well i have a little experiance with eve say 33 mill sp of it and i tell you what eve was terrible at the start even some of the more recent expansions say shiva was nothing but bugs my corp pretty much stopped played for a few days while it got sorted. but threw it all i stuck round with a great group of brits and they where nothing like the kids here come on a game for 5 minutes and go omg omg this sux.christ  its a goddam beta let em fix it. if eve had the same fanbase that flames in these rooms the game woulda never made it outta beta. no wonder most poeple in the world dont like us anymore, the spolied gotta have things like i want it or it suxs attitude realy blows. ohh and guess what  i hope dnl becomes like eve a smallish loyal fanbase and a great world community as for the 8 yr old flamers keep to wow and stay outta the games i play aka eve and now the dnl beta named sog on second thought try eve youll make for a nice killmail for me collection!

stop saying the game has potential. Every mmo has potential damnit. They have worked on it for over 5 years and this is all they can muster? If none of their promised features are implemented after 5 years, do you really think they will be in 6 months?

And before you say SOG isnt DnL, it is. Its the same build as the current DnL BETA.

You sound very angry. Mebbe you should try some anger management courses. Just stay calm and don't play the game that annoys you so. There will always be differing opinions to yours. Just don't take it personally. Me, I like SoG so far and I think it has potential too image

I agree. I beta tested Eve and played long after release. It was fairly terrible even at launch and for a while thereafter. Most people in North America had never heard of Eve to start with. CCP had no advertising budget to speak of, nor could they afford to buy shelf space in large stores. No way could they compete with the big players. The same things that have been said about NP3 were said about CCP at the time. I see an analogous scenario here.

Eve is now the highest rated game here. It grows slowly but steadily and has won many industry awards. I have always seen DnL paralleling Eve. Both from small unknown development teams far outwith the USA or Asia. Both are a niche product. One large seemless persistent world with all out PvP. Eve survived, and prospered, against all the odds. Will DnL do likewise? Well who knows? It is up to the developers.

CCP learned from their errors and pulled things around with some aplomb. Can Farlan/NP3? Who knows again? One thing is certain though it aint over 'til the fat investor sings, and they will not be keen to see the money invested thus far go for nothing without giving the game a fair chance. If Farlan and NP3 laboured under any misapprehension they now without doubt realise the brutalities of the maket they have entered and this might be the very thing, ironically, that saves the game and perhaps even may make it great. They now hold their fate firmly in their own hands just as CCP did.
