Hi folks,
I'm gonna hit 30 tonight so will be starting my Choco companion quest.
I'm an Archer heading towards Bard so simple question really. What class/role would you suggest I level my Choco as?
I'm thinking Tank but I would also like heals, but I have no idea which one would be more useful.
Any good advice would be appreciated.

Since it's really just for overworld killing stuff (and usually you can't even use them in fates cuz they take the group slot which people don't like), I just made mine DPS.
Thanks for the replies
Interesting as Noob above said we can't...
Actually, that is not what he said. You can use them in fates, but if you are grouping, they will take up a group slot and people dont like it.
FATEs don't need a group, they are open. So yes your chocobo can tank a FATE boss, but why would you want to? Any real DPS around would pull aggro off your chocobo pretty easily.
I have heard the healing on the chocobo as very minimal and not worthwhile, but that is what I heard, and no testing myself. Right now I'm trying to go for tank...
But let's not get ahead of ourselves here... leveling your chocobo is stupid hard. I did a little math and screenshots of pixel movement for exp and if I am level 50 and let all my exp go to my chocobo (which seems to be the fastest I've seen that EXP bar move) I calculated roughly 1000 monster kills to go from rank 4 to rank 5. And by rank 4 you can only afford like 2-3 abilities for your chocobo.
My guess is they have not changed the chocobo skills/leveling to match FFXIV 2.0. As quests/FATEs/dungeons (and any time you are grouped) your chocobo gets NONE of that exp. It appears the chocobo and its skills/leveling is a relic of 1.0 and I wouldn't put too much effort into it.... that being said I enjoy the challenge of leveling it now, so I continue to do so

Doesnt seem the Chocobo is significantly good at anything really (or needed), so may as well just make it a pocket healer.
Tank doesn't work as stated above as you can't have it go in first. Also, you'll notice it does not open with it's skills. The chocobo will almost always auto-attack at least three times before it uses a skill. My word of advice is to take the first skill from each tree and put your chocobo on free mode or w/e it's called (not in game atm to check) so it then has two offensive skills and a minor heal it can throw out while you level it. Then I'd recommend pumping offensive as the tanking skills are near useless and the healing ones are laughable in their impact on the chocobo's stats and heals.
Also by focusing on DPS and taking the extra skill in the tank tree, you'll increase it's contribution in fates which impacts yours as well. More exp and what have you for the both of you.
Uhm, no. I use mine as tank and he can hold hate like a champ. We had DD and a Palading trying to steal hate from him as a test and both failed miserably (same is true for titan on summoner).
You probably did not set your chocobo in Tank mode using the pet commands (when you summon him he is in Free Mode and does whatever he feels is right at the time)
You also want to level up his ability tree in Tanking.
What rank chocobo was holding aggro? Also does changing them to Tank mode increase Enmity?
As bard or lancer I always can take aggro from my chocobo, but I just did as someone else was saying and took each of the starter abilities and use it in free mode.

Why would you use it in free mode when you want it to tank?
The starter ability is only to enable you to switch between stances. It makes no sense to get him all the starter abilities and use in free mode. That defeats the whole point of skill trees and specialization.
Would you do that for your character?
PS: Added picture of my chocobo to my post.
I understand specialization, but there is some unknowns. Like in free stance your chocobo can use any skills. So if you take both the Attacker and Defender dmg abilities he gets both. But there's no CD mentioned and I assume that having 2 abilities is better than having 1.
And I did try putting him in defensive stance and you might be on to something. I'm pretty low lvl on my THM, but I took Cure crossclass from CNJ and my Chocobo was able to tank a Fate Boss with only occasional heals from me. I pulled aggro if I ever actually tried to DPS hard, but you could solo a FATE boss with you and your chocobo this way.
In free stance or dps stance his emnity is very low, defense stance must do more than what the tooltip says.

Level all chocobos, no matter the class, as a DPS. their heals suck, they wont take aggro until you have it, etc.
DPS. all the way. You wont need as much healing because the mob will die faster, same for tanking.
