[Interview] Defiance: Committed to Improving the Game

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Defiance is a game with a massive amount of potential, potential that Trion Worlds is committed to providing for players. We chatted with Creative Lead Trick Dempsey about how that will happen. It's a terrifically informative interview that you won't want to miss. Let us know what you think in the comments.

MMORPG.com: Good to talk with you again, Trick! Been a while since we previewed the Castithan DLC back at E3 and obviously a lot has happened since then.  What's the response been to the first DLC and how has the game been progressing since season one of the show ended?

Trick Dempsey: With the Castithan Charge Pack we were able to deliver on a lot of features that the players, and the dev team, really wanted to see. It brought back sieges, introduced a massive boss fight with an enemy players wanted to fight, and a compelling new game mode. While working with Syfy on between-season crossover plans, we’ve begun to really focus our efforts on improving overall game quality.

How about phase 1 players who're just not active because of the current problems..? ;-)

I wanted to play and like this game because of its attempt to tie in gaming and television, I tried to download the trial to test it before I commit to the purchase and I had a million and one issues trying to get the game to run...I've since given up, for now.

I will probably attempt a trial again sometime, I think I would enjoy the game and glad to hear they will still work on making it better.

I have yet to watch the show.

"Defiance is a game with a massive amount of potential, potential that Trion Worlds is committed to providing for players."

They are going to provide us with potential?

What should have been written, was that they are going to BUILD upon that existing potential to provide us with an improved experience.

Might want to do a little editing.

After reading that good article I'm half tempted to redownload this game. :)

Hopefully the chat system will get a major overhaul, it is one of the worst I have seen in an MMO. I like the game, but it feels lonely when you can't find groups to play with or guilds to join. Hopefully after they make the improvements the game will get better and bring in a lot of new players...

At least they are not pulling the plug and cutting their losses,...yet.

Scott told me back with our interview when he took the CEO position that Defiance was one of the absolute top priorities with the restructure.  I'm betting they can make it work with the right changes.  Progression and "things to do" sound good to me.

To be honest anything they do is going to be an improvement probably one of my biggest let downs in the last few years was a absolutely terrible game.

    Enjoying the show though.

I say this as someone who thinks the game is decent - but interviews like this smack of the dreaded Vote of Confidence given to coaches and managers that are fired soon afterward.  I'd be doubly worried because of the TV connection - SyFy is well known for cancelling shows on a whim, and that's the death knell for the game in it's current state.

In other words, Trion can bail out at any time, and there's no compelling reason why they won't, sadly.

    Avatars are people too

Not sure I like the idea that the chat is not going to obscure the screen, that says to me you will still only see minimal chat, personally I would rather see a proper chat box so that conversations can be followed when I'm playing like very other mmo out there. It's not asking for much really.

defiance is like the CEO constantly putting coins into the slot machine....getting nothing, stops trying so hard, and then some other CEO of another MMO comes along and puts a coin in the slot machine and wins a jackpot. I'd say cut your losses and pull the plug, it's a waste of money

I thought the game was beautiful.  Also cutting edge.  Then you got to the end and nothing.  You grind like a korean MMO.  No thanks.  I cannot believe they have not fixed that horrific chat box.  The game seriously feels like a single player game.

Good to see various changes. New modes are also added. This has made game more exciting. Hope to have such games more in future.

As one of the few that still played this game until recently; this game has no chance. I wrote this game off after their last live stream. They harbor and encourage cheating in PvP. They dont know how to balance the guns. These guys cant even get a basic function of an MMO correct, CHAT! Trick is another know-it-all lead dev that wants to promote the game as he see's it and not what the players want or what really needs to be addressed. So many mistakes that had been brought up in the past were put in only to fail horribly then finally changed to what the players suggested. These narrow minded dev's are what kills games. Defiance will be the next in line.

Same 'ol. They've been promising to fix things since Alpha, yet very little of what they've done has accomplished anything save to make things worse.

The chat "improvements" are a case in point, from bad to worse in one easy "improvement". I wouldn't have even thought it possible to make the chat system worse than it was at launch, but they accomplished it.

Honestly I don't think the game is salvageagble. To get anywhere It would first need to decide what it wants to be, right now it's just a mess of a mish-mash of half baked ideas. Next the UI would need a complete overhaul from the ground up, the current UI is beyond terrible. And then it would need about four to five times the amount of content it has, along with DLCs and episodic content that actually lives up to the promises that were made, rather than being a complete and utter joke. Lastly it needs to not have the entire game design revolve around the cash shop and RNG.

So basically it needs to be taken offline, ripped down to its core, and given the FFXIV ARR treatment. Just don't see that happening and anything short of that isn't likely to work.

    - Weather effects that affect gameplay (including darker nights, different intensity of rain and wind, etc)

    - During night time the gameplay experience should be different from Day time (different enemies? npc ambushes?, etc)

    - Mailbox

    - NPC reactions towards your actions (if you shoot them they attack you, if you shoot nearby they react accordingly)

    - Armor customization so everyone can look as unique as possible.

    - Housing and house interiors. The game has a lot of villages and buildings and you cannot even open a door to see whats inside. That is part of exploration, entering abandoned houses looking for clues, survival items, etc.

ALL THESE are quality of life features that will significantly improve the game. If they ever add them to Defiance i will come back. If not, then it sucks to be me since they took my money and gave me nothing so I'll move on and never come back. Meanwhile, good luck to them and i hope the game keeps improving.

Honestly these were pretty obvious design and UI flaws that a lot of us could see coming, hence the sudden drop in player numbers when we got our hands on it. The game felt like it was rushed out the window because the show was being aired, and unlike FF14 this game can only launch once. Changes are welcome, but I can't be expected to wait for things to improve when other great games are out at the moment.

The main issue with the game is the lack of progression.  I didnt feel any stronger at ego level 400 than I did when I first started the game.  Why keep playing a game when getting another ego level means absolutely nothing?

I do enjoy the game, but it definitely needs more work.

Unfortunately the parts I care most about (story and world) will probably be ignored for a while. I doubt we'll get new areas or major storylines any time soon. :(

I guess its just the fast paced nature of the mmo/tech business but it seems the game hasn't even been out long enough (6 months or so) to warrant it being a "waste of time" while waiting for them to make it more to players preferences. Just seems the consumer is so demanding of mmos in particular...as an overreaction to being screwed over in the past I imagine. The chat does suck so i give you that...but it I had no problem replying to others yet rarely received replies back to my inquiries. I just took it as anti-social behavior which I was used to even in games with top notch chat systems in place.. I never really had issues with the UI. Is it great?..no..but I never felt it interfered with game play. It just took a good perusal of all its menu options and hot-keys. Plus a bit of messing about and re-binding keys beforehand . After that ,no problems. I guess this was just my...one player's...experience.
