I'm not a bandwagon follower...I just can't play ac if im going to get on and see 3 people a night. The outstanding playerbase was half of the fun in ac.

There's around 20 people in the marketplace in peak hours. Lots of chatter on the global chat channels where you can make trades and join quest groups.

I always find enough people to do what I want to do. Heavy quests, or just talking. I have played AC1 since bata. I was a Fisthand for 5 years. Granted there is less population. The game is good, probably the best game no one plays. At its peak the Fisthands were 10,000. When they were less, I still could find the numbers to do quests one person can't do.
I also played the AC2 bata. The graphics in AC2 are superior to AC1. I hoped the expansion to AC1, Throne of Destiny, would bring better graphics. It brought "changed" graphics, not actually better. They are not putting the detail into places like they did in the early days.
AC1 has chat channels, Trade, General, Allegiance. You can talk to everyone who is on at once.
I thought the trees looked dramatically better after the graphics upgrade. Everything else was just a little better.
Then again, nobody ever played AC1 for its awesome graphics
I found that after I quit about 8 or 9 months ago, (my account was hacked and stripped), and recently came back to the game... everyone had left. According to VN, it happened suddenly, and nobody really expected it to happen the way it did. Within the span of a couple months, people just disappeared from the game. It was mostly due to the newer games out there finally pulling some of the long time players away.
But, there is hope.. many players constantly are returning to the game, but I feel that until they start merging servers the game just wont be as fun as it used to. If they merged them in groups of 3, or possibly paired up the most populated with the least populated, it would be a lot better.
Some people would think of that as "the game is dying", but hey.. the game has been dying for years, it just refuses to stop breathing now. If the servers were merged, there would be quite a lot of breathing, and the fun would be renewed.
I feel bad though, because I just cancelled my subscription again, to go play WoW with some real life friends. None of my old friends play AC anymore, and I just don't find games to be as fun when I don't have friends to play with me.
I totally understand how a game is not as much fun without the people you know. I wish people I played with 5 years would come back.
There are lots of people to meet tho. The monarchy I'm in now has quality, fun people. Fun to chat with, fun to quest with.
I wouldn't say the game has been dying over a period of years. The populations have been up and down over the past year in a random pattern.
I think the game is not showing signs of dying at this time. We are getting good updates every month, and the population is not in a freefall. The message boards have some goodbye posts, and some I'm back posts. Everything is looking at least stable.
It also depends on what server you are on... I play on Morningthaw and we have PLENTY of players. Between 20-60 in marketplace... and a good range of players at diffrent times (meaning there is a lot at night and in the morn and the day) If your gonna play Darktide, your never gonna find anyone cause they all are hiding.
If you are having trouble finding players, and your on morningthaw. Message Ashake and she'll help you out with spots and help you find a monarchy and such.

We must have been playing on a different Morningthaw. Because when I logged in, I wouldn't find more than 10 people in MP, and they were the same 10 who were always there. I thought decal would bring a lot of people back when it got working, but it didn't bring near as many as I'd hoped.
*shrug* Ashake my monarch that I talk to on aim who is 3rd biggest monarch says they have people logged in all the time.
Maybe im wrong, it has been a month since I last played.
