(THE BIG BUT) the PvP is solely in instanced maps and consensual (sounds like Guild Wars).

Am I too picky?  I dont think im too picky.  I just want to play an online game where somebody else can effect me and I can effect somebody else.  I think, by definition, thats what MMO means, it means Massive Multiplayer Online game, not Massive Subscribers Online.  Arent we suppose to interact with eachother in an MMO?

I agree with you, even though I'm not a big PvPer. The instanced PvP seems sorta fake to me. There's no sense of permanence to it. For example, capturing a base or tower or something in some games means your side keeps that base until the other side takes it back. But instanced PvP gets reset as soon as you leave, so there's no real benefit to either side.

Of course, I'm referring more to realm v. realm or faction v. faction type PvP here, not one on one. I PvPed in SWG and even though the Galactic Civil War was not as fully implemented as it could/should have been, it added to the thrill knowing that it was a real encounter between rebels and imperials in the real gameworld.

In WoW, it was all instanced and seemed pretty pointless (imho). edit-I played on a PvE server obviously. They do have PvP servers in WoW that are free for all.

I played UO a long long time ago, so long ago I cant remember.  But I only played for a couple months before I had to quit because of work.  (I worked away from home for considerable periods of time).

I have vivid memories as a noob.

-Being scammed, multiple times, by someone getting me to attack them in town.

-Standing in the middle of town next to the bank spamming, "THIEF THIEF" cause I am completely paranoid about being robbed of my pathetic belongings.

-Having someone steal my ORE I was mining,  I shuffled a big pile from one spot to another, one time while shuffling some invisible guy STOLE IT!  He picked  it up and thought I would leave first.  He thought he might get lucky with an impatient player.  Well he is wrong cause I am patient, I stood there for an hour and he left.  I kept asking him, "Wouldnt it be faster for you to mine it yourself."  I think this is the first time I met a 1337-griefer player.

-Being chased by some guy and his army of 30+ monsters.  I actually lived, went back to the same place to mine, and got chased by the same guy of 30+ monsters spamming (Follow A B C D...).  I escaped a second time.  :)

-Running into red names and getting really scared.

-Being frustrated that the bounty system didnt work.  Guess what I heard, the developers of UO didnt fix the BOUNTY SYSTEM, what did they do instead?  This is what I heard.  Instead of fixing the BOUNTY SYSTEM, which would probably take a short period of time, they COMPLETELY CATERED TO THE CAREBEARS!    I remember putting a bounty on someone and hearing that theyre buddy would just kill them and take the money.  THERE WERE PLENTY OF GOOD IDEAS ON HOW TO FIX THE BOUNTY SYSTEM!  But nooooooooooo, do developers listen to the right customers?  Nope.  They screw up their own game.

I cant even go back to UO because even UO is screwed up.  IS THERE A SINGLE GAME OUT THERE THAT ISNT COMPLETELY SCREWED UP?!

image <-- started MMOGs as this.

    image <-- turned into this.

I used to think playing "nice-nice" was good and instancing was justifiable.  But as the years passed, as games became "nice-nice" versions I realized this removed MOST of the risk, danger, and therefore the thrill and excitment of MMOGs.

So, let's hope for a return to "nitty-gritty" games with some teeth in them.  Kill-stealing, camp-busting, thieving, low-down, no-good, smack-talking, mob-training, newbie ganking games.

Hard games, nasty games, brutal games.

By the way, it seems to me THAT is when you make the best friends in MMOGs because you know who your worst enemies are and you need friends to watch your back.

(Edit: just was checking out the Darkfall Features and FAQ.  This game may be "the one"!)

    What about Shadowbane?

I love CoV/H, but if your only purpose is PVP look else where.

Yeah, the open PvP in SWG is pretty cool.  You could potentially come across an enemy anywhere in the game, whether it's in Theed, some remote spot on Mustafar or even in Space.  PvP changes the cities faction association too.  If you kill an enemy player, you gain a planet control point for your faction.  If your faction has the highest planetary control points, the cities then have soldiers of your faction patrolling the city and will attack any combatant/Special force players.  Also affects how many faction points it will cost you to buy stuff from a recruiter (like faction armour schematics for armoursmiths, faction furniture, etc) and how much faction it will cost you to bio-link faction armour to yourself.

There are other titles that offer open PvP, like EVE Online or Shabowbane. SWG also offers the opportunity to be open to PvP all the time. Other games offer seperate PvP servers (WoW, MxO, etc). From the under development titles, there's Dark and Light, Darkfall Online and Roma Victor.

    Currently playing:
    * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
    * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.

Have to correct you here, because your "BIG BUT" is completely inaccurate.  While arenas and base raids are instanced, the PvP zones are not.  They are also none consensual, enter and you are a valid target once you've left the safe zone.

well, considering you can RAID an enemy base and destroy or steal their item of powers, that seems pretty much affecting them...

What he said.  While COV PVP is kinda lame right now, it has a great setup (meaning the developers had the right idea). The problem that Im running into right now (im still in the first pvp zone) is people abusing inspirations (temp buffs that you can buy) in the first PVP zone there way to easy to obtain and people us them way to much... Also a major problem right now is the population of PVPers, frankly its not that many.. Numerous times I have asked groups can we go to the PVP zone and do some missions, and numerous times I have had people reply with "I dont like to PVP".. Basicly there are still a bunch of Carebears that play this game.. We could really use some true PVPers to get these base raids and zone fighting pvp going.

CoV and CoH its pretty fun and a great game if your into that type of game it doesnt start gettin fun till later in the game its just to damn stale at the beginning. No item base whatsover makes it boring it is almost a clone of MxO in many ways but if you wanna try CoH id say just go to MxO least they have a economy to play with.

  • SaftwearSaftwear Member Posts: 124

I'm going to have to uhm disagree with the original poster.

Instancing in COH/COV PvP is very well implemented. There are a few different zones with different objectives which are as big if not bigger than the other zones within the city. Then there are base raids, which are instanced but pit Super group vs. Villain group for items of power.

Seriously this game is way more fun than any game out right now.

It gets rid of the tedius MMorp and gets right to the gut. Char custimation is is great and you can have up to four costumes. The controls are real smooth, and you can fly.

    Real fast if slotted prperly.

Very fun and def worth the 30 or so for the game.
