Can someone tell me if there is grind in this game? If so how long will it take me to become viable? Or is it too late to start now?

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Excluding tornados, I feel like you could solo every mission, including group based ones, right at the beginning. It would take longer and you may die quite a few times. I would not try soloing any thumper other than stock, though.
The main difference is you do less damage than better equipped players. You are also a little slower, have a little less health, and can use your abilities a little less often. You also don't start off with a secondary weapon or your HKM ability.
The only one of these things that would really impede you is the less damage, I imagine. In time sensitive missions you would have to get creative, but a lot of areas have "back doors" that let you avoid part of them rather than clearing them of enemies. In thumpers above stock, I think you would have too much trouble with claws until you got higher damage.
Your viable from the start.

There is a grind in this game and it's huge, larger than most asian grinders out there.
Depends on what you mean by viable. You can do the basic pve stuff in the noob frames, higher level you'll need to do their version of the gear grind, which involves getting a group that need the same resources as you, dropping a resource gatherer and shooting the mobs it spawns before they destroy it. after that you'll spend many an hour(or wekk/month) infront of a text menu slowly refining those resources. You'll also need to level up the frame btw as you go.
If you want to pvp(when/if it gets put back) you'll need to buy the better frames. I say buy because last time I checked earning them for free didn't seem very realistic. Playing the way I did, 2-3 hours a day doing whatever I wanted I worked out the grind time in firefall would be counted in years(i think it averaged out at around 2 per frame).
If they ever bring in open world pvp I doubt a f2per will be able to compete with anyone that bought the best founder package.
I'll add this so you can check for yourself(and check its still roughly accurate) but it too over 7,000,000 xp, 500,000 crystite, 500,000 rresources(also need to be refined), doing 500 map events to max each frame( i think there may be a couple of extra bits there too) and this doesn't include crafted gear. Earning free frames requires 10 pilot tokens which you get as you level a frame. I think maxing a frame still earns you enough pilot tokens to get one of the better ones. If you want to get a frame for free you're better off trying to spread the cost over the 5 free frames as this won't take anywhere near as long, but this time saved will only work for 1 free frame as the costs will double after you've done this.
BTW for frame essentially read gun.
I doubt it's too late to start now(especially if you pay) but you will be behind the serious fanboys as not only will they have gotten access to all(or at least most) of the frames prior to this current design, but they also got some decent xp/resource boosts giving them a big headstart there too. I would also suggest you watch for this when asking how big the grind is, how viable playing free is as they won't always have a good perspective.
It's free and I haven't played since after it launched so you may want to double check this for yourself as the devs have a tendancy to change their minds quite a lot with firefall, which could be a reason to play/not play in itself.
Have they increased the grind in the last few months? I played 3-4 hours a day and within a month had 4 frames at T3 some with T4 upgrades. I'm not sure how , baring a huge change, even the most casual player thinks the game has a grind. Did I miss something, if so disregard.
