Everquest - A full world to explore, screaming players "GET TO ZONE GET TO ZONE!!!!!!", a beautiful environment and adventure around every corner.
Ultima Online- A sandbox to play in, dungeons to explore which did not have a storyline, treasure to accomplish, and outfits unique and usable. PvP was a blast, and full loot was king.
Shadowbane- PvP on a whole new level. Centaurs, Minotaurs, Vampires, Demons-- unique races, tons of unique classes, flying characters, and a whole lot of individuality never seen before in a MMORPG.
Asherons Call- I've heard epic, and the few hours I played-- really smooth and awesome design. Don't know much, but what I know was great.
Dark Age of Camelot- Realm vs Realm Combat. Tons of unique and extremely fun classes, battlegrounds, and keep sieges. Catapults, Trebuchets, and Rams. Tanks, Healers, Rogues, and Wizards. This game was, IMO, the greatest of the greats, and one of the best video games of all time in almost every way.
I'm not just talking about PvP, and no, I am not talking about FFA PvP. Shadowbane's PvP was more along the lines of Guild vs Guild, DAoC was RvR, and UO had guild wars, PK vs Anti-PK, dueling, and Order vs Chaos. That was 100x better IMO than random ganking and PKing newbs.
I am talking about both PvP (RvR) and PvE. Not just a world to conquer, but a world to explore. Not just players to fight, but dungeons to crawl.
What would a game that took from these greats be like?
What would a modern day version be?
Is it possible to combine these 5 games, and more?
I believe we need to see a game that takes features from each 5, gets rid of the bad ideas and failed concepts, implement something fresh and innovative, and show the world that Everquest, DAoC, and Shadowbane were amazing for more than just their deaths as games.

I have not read your post but...
How to combine the Greats? UO + Everquest 1 + Shadowbane + Asherons Call + DAoC= ?????
for me it == Guild Wars 2. But we'll have to see.
Guild Wars 2's 50 minutes game play video:

How is Guild Wars 2 in ANY way related to ANY of those games???
Yea thats what im wondering.
Too bad that random ganking and PKing "newbs" is exactly what you will get.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Psst...it was called "world of warcraft"--its biggest flaw (is often stated) lay in trying to be all things to all people...like op's hypothetical multi-clone creation would be.
Clones are bad bad bad, mmkay. Except clones of my wayback favorites, I really like those.... ... ... dot.
Yes it's possible.
But it isn't the features themselves that you can just transplant into other games. It's those features set in a virtual world that made them great.
Make a world sim and then a game around it. Proven success. It's negligence at this point to make mmorpgs in any other way in my opinion.

The only way to get what you and I want : Community, a good community, thats all !
Back in the old days, peoples were helping each other, coz MMOs were hard, we had to group together to complete stuff, PvE and/or PvP.
This time is done, we wont be able to play a game and have fun like we used to do, there will always be some stupid kid (or older peoples) that will get in your group and leave in the middle of the damn dungeon or PvP squad you got. There will always be noobs that can beat you because he farm 24/7 to get the best gear ever and chained farmed the damn instance that you got bored to do, and that you cant complete everyday coz you got a familly.
There is no more skilled based MMO...
Seriously, who havent been in a guild in the last 5-6 years, that was recruiting and saw in an application that the one trying to get in was in the best of the best guild ever that was in the 5 best guild of that server and that he was himself in the best 5 players of the server ?
He get an invitation, you play with him, and he's one of the 5 worst players that you ever saw playing MMO...
Here we go, the new MMO players generation ! They saw everything, they did everything and they're the best at everything !
How can we expect to have a MMO with the best stuff we had 10 years ago, when peoples cant even play the kiddy game we got today ? When all they can do is grinding and farming stuff to be able to beat peoples coz seriously... they suck....
Bring me a skilled based MMO where i wont have to spend the time i want to have with my familly, then i'll play MMOs again, and i'll know that peoples that beat me, its gonna be because they're better than me, and i'll honor them while im dead instead of ragequitting because i know i got killed coz i wanted to have a real life instead of a virtual one.
Boy: Why can't I talk to Him?
Mom: We don't talk to Priests.
As if it could exist, without being payed for.
F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play. Therefore P2W.
one can dream of a game like this but unless one of us wins the lotto and invest 20-40mil into making it our selves then that will NEVER EVER happen sir.
Distinct boundaries would be the key to success. Some of the gameplay styles those MMOs offered do not sit well together. In particular making sure there were separate zones for PvE and PvP. The contested borderlands from DAOC could be where the game influencing mechanics of SB came into effect.
You would also need to choose one setting for lore reasons or in would be a terrible mish mash of concepts.
My computer is better than yours.
GW2 WvWvW is as fail as fails can go
when the core phylosophy behind RvR revolves around unbalance you know your looking at a dead game
Or....... you could just go play these games. All of them, except Shadowbane, are still up and running.
The major problem with the gaming industry right now is how many players are graphics snobs. They would literally buy the exact same game every year if they just kept releasing it with more modern graphics each time. Due to this, companies are spending almost all of their budget on the flash and not on the gameplay. This leaves so many new games fun to look at, but extremely quick to get bored with.
Care to explain?
GW2 is actually more balanced than DAoC... in DAoC, if you were on a "bad realm" (low population) on your server, you were utterly screwed. In GW2, the servers are matched so that you don't have such a situation. Also, in GW2, all opponents have access to all classes.
So what's that imbalance you talk about? Please explain.

players will have different opinions on what features made those games great
probably worth throwing preCU SWG in there too

Those games needs to be remade but not mixed together.
While we have 1000 WoW clones, we still have to see clones of UO, EQ, AC and DAoC.
Darkfall have many Shadowbane cues, although probably you mean an AAA.
