Hello, my name is Alexey Kudashkin. I am a student of Stockholm University and I am conducting a study on MMORPG players and their class choices together with my colleague, Stellan Nordström.
This study aims to provide developers with insight in how players view their player classes and might help developers create better player classes in their games.
The study itself is conducted by gathering opinions on players such as yourself and by checking your opinions with other players to find out reoccuring patterns as to what makes a class fun to play for a large amount of players
In this study you will be asked what age group you belong to, what gender you are, what class you play and what makes you play that class. The more thorough an answer you provide the more accurate data we will get which will help us a lot!
The survey will take about 5 minutes to answer and it can be reached here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/19bbtrvfHbtMFc7nTwowqZQTonEkdefMGzAr8PBK7emk/viewform .
In this survey you will be asked some basic questions along with what makes you interested in the class you consider your main character The more thorough an answer you provide, the more accurate data we will receive, which will help us alot!
The data you provide will only be accessible by us and while we will present some of the data in our final report, it will in no way be traced back to you. Especially since we do not collect names, aliases or IP adresses.
If there are any questions you can reach us at stellan2004@gmail.com

Another of those guys who thinks most who play WoW are kids...
Review your age list and I may answer.
My computer is better than yours.
Euh...it took me like 10 seconds
Or did I miss something
If you go to warcraftrealms.com and check the census section, you'll see that the most popular classes in order from most popular to least popular are:
1.) Hunter
2.) Paladin
3.) Death Knight
4.) Priest
5.) Druid
6.) Warrior
7.) Mage
8.) Shaman
9.) Warlock
10.) Rogue
11.) Monk
From my own experience and assertion, I don't think it has anything to do with attitudes or demographics, but more to do with gameplay mechanics. I've tried every class up to at least level 30 or 40, and while all can be strong and capable, there's no doubt those top five (especially since the last few expansions) are far less punishing for the player when it comes to most encounters in the game, i.e. solo farming, rep grinding, etc.
Hunters, for example, have a pet that can tank for them, no casting times, and wear mail armor. Basically, they have very few weaknesses and some fun pet mechanics to break up the monotony of leveling. Paladins and Death Knights are self explanatory; they bring all the positives of playing a caster/healing-based class with the heavy armor and damage mitigation of a tanking class. Likewise, Priests and Druids feel harder (in my experience, at least) to kill when you play them, as opposed to more cool-down based classes.
Monks are too new to ascertain whether or not they're popular. Rogues, on the other hand, are a perfect example of a class that basically has everything going against them (outside of PvP). Most of the mobs in WoW hit like a truck with melee attacks, but very few (outside of raids and dungeons) have strong ranged attacks. Therefore any class with light armor that's expected to go toe-to-toe with mobs is asking for trouble. The combo based resource system that Rogues use is TERRIBLE and unfair when you consider every other class essentially has an infinite resource system. Also, most of the abilities that mitigate melee damage are on heavy cool-downs.
I actually leveled a Rogue up to about Hellfire Peninsula and simply gave up out of sheer exhaustion. Every attack (unless you have incredible gear and enchants) requires planning and execution. While this was fun and challenging at first, it gets old when more and more hours start passing by or you're trying to hit a goal. It gets doubly old when you look over and see the nearby Paladin or DK tanking an elite and three normal mobs at the same time while, you struggle with a single normal mob that went into enrage mode.
Obviously, some players will disagree with my opinion, but I totally see why certain classes are popular and others are not, and again, I don't think it has anything to do with superficial reasons, but deep gameplay ones.
wholeheartedly agree with your assessment.
personally, i always hated dealing with my pet as a hunter and usually spec'd entirely towards my own dmg...but that's just me.
I agree with Cyan's assertions for the most part. Rogues are pretty popular in PvP related areas, but outside of that, they're very touch and go.
Every now and again, rogues had a patch where they were downright powerful, but that's few and far between. The combo point system needs a serious overhaul for rogues. Hell even placing the combo points on the rogue, instead of the target would be a great fix for many things.
The only thing that make rogues powerful, is their ability to select when and whom they fight, and that only truly works in PvP.
This........
But what is really tragic is that developers don't know that and keep making games for 12 y/o
MMORPGs are hobbies for older gamers............ developers should fire their marketing team.

A bit old but one of many projects just like yours. Back in '09 the average WoW player was around 28 which matches other MMO surveys that show "around 30" as the average age.
i agree with Cyan.
My personal favorites are Shaman (Enhancement and Elemental), Destruction Warlock, and mages of all kind.
I do love Mages a lot but im tired of mmorpg companies making mages "hit hard at the cost of dying even faster". Im tired of seeing a mage having to rely on kiting to survive in almost every mmorpg. This doesnt happen in non-mmo games with mages so why mmorpg companies do this nonsese is beyond me.
Its all about the mechanics, but mage mechanics relying on kiting need to die in mmos.... specially on PvE.
Just resubbed and tried out my assassination spec rogue for the first time in several years, and noticed quite a few improvements have been made (although still not enough to fix the major flaws that probably prevent the class from becoming popular). For example, they finally fixed the "coating your blades in poisons" ability by making it a simple 1hr buff similar to all other class buffs. That was a much needed change IMO, as the old system of making poisons was pointlessly time consuming and expensive. Also, finishing moves that apply a buff (slice and dice, and whatever finisher applies health regen) can now be activated sans enemy. In other words, if the mob dies before the finishing move, you can still apply the effect of it on yourself.
However, all of that pales in comparison to my ret paladin. I remember some of these changes around the time of CATA, but never spent much time examining them. Basically, pallies now have two separate resource systems: mana and holy power. Holy power is three charges that are activated from using certain abilities. Special types of heals and attacks are activated by those charges, meaning they're essentially free because they're separate from your mana pool! Not only that, but there's a talent that grants a big chance for certain mana-based abilities to be free and instant! No wonder this class is so popular. It wears plate armor, can heal itself for free, and almost every attack is free and instant (no casting). You'd be a fool NOT to play as a paladin, haha!
I noticed the new talent system has gotten a lot of flak for removing trees, but I really love the changes that they made in that regard. Instead of boring and unnoticeable talents (for example, 3% faster attack speeds, or 1 second taken from a cooldown), about every 10 or 15 levels you get access to a choice of 3 new passive or active abilities that fit your particular specialization.
discipline priest
No doing your poll but my favorite was the Druid and I'm over 40.
