I was browsing Twich last night looking to get my fix of HS and I noticed Magic the Gathering was topping 20k viewers so I had a look. There was a tournament stream going on, having HS compared often unfavourably to MTG I took a look, 10 minutes later I still didn't know what was going on, there was what appeared to be health in the top corners that's about all I could get out of my short view. The biggest thing I noticed was the players were no throwing cards at each other... how odd.

Magic is to TCG's what WoW is to MMORPG's.
it is inevitable any TCG/CCG will be compared to Magic as any new MMORPG is compared to WoW.

The two games have some similarities but there are a few big things that make them very different. I wouldn't say I prefer one over the other because there are pros and cons to each but I will say that hearthstone's gameplay gets rid of all the annoying card resolution arguments because there is no reactionary card play.
The three biggest differences I see in the games are:
1. Minions only attack the 'summoner/hero' in MTG and are useless till your next turn. You pick which minions you attack with and your opponent can choose to defend with whatever minions he has available, any non defended attacks go to your 'summoner/hero' which starts at 20 health. When you attack your creature is tapped and cannot be used to defend the next turn.
2. Instant cast spells can be played on your opponents turn. This is where a lot of criticism comes in because you can only play cards proactively on your turn. I could attack with a minion and then my opponent could then play a spell that kills him and then I could play a spell that buffs his life and then they could play a spell that counter spells my buff assuming we all have the mana available. This type of gameplay can get very complex (so much that it often leads to big arguments) which is a lot of complexity that hearthstone is somewhat lacking in right now, yes HS has secrets but each class only having access to so many and your opponent can see you have played them somewhat negates this.
3. MANA. It is just flat out more complex in MTG, there are multiple resource pools you create giving you different types of mana to play different types of cards. This creates different themed decks focused on types of mana just like class specific cards. You also have to draw and play your mana as a card which adds a little bit of deck draw RNG to the game.
Really what I think the biggest complaint is from MTG players is that Hearthstone is no where near as complex so they often see it as less strategic. MTG has had years to build up and balance their complexity and while Hearthstone might never include instant casts I have no doubt in my mind that it will become a very high skill cap game with many many ways to win a match.

HS is to MTG / TCG's, what WoW is to MMORPG's.
Mechanically, MTG is a much more robust, complex, and skill-oriented game. Now we have HS. Which blatantly takes all aspects of MTG, and simplifies them to their most basic components. Things like land drops, tapping, & counters are made extremely simple. It's essentially a game that focuses on accessibility over complexity to an extreme level. And yet, it has successfully dwarfed MTG's popularity, while still in beta.
I would not be surprised if it's popularity continues to grow. They are already hosting tournaments. There's a large following both from blizzard fanboys & veteran TCG fans alike. It's yet another example of how well Blizzard is able to dumb down games, and be extremely successful for it.
It is a very fun game. Just not a very deep one.
