I've been playing World Of Warcraft since early beta late 2003.
I consider myself to be a hardcore player and the elite of the elite, so I do not enjoy clearing "Hello Kitty" style raid content and dinging maximum level in under a week. I do not enjoy four button rotations where any 3 year old can achieve maximum DPS,I do not enjoy games that are "so easy you can play them with your penis". I did not even go into Siege Of Orgrimmar and down a single boss because my old teammates (Blood Legion) cleared 14/14 heroic in under 3 weeks... that's right, three weeks. From what Ataxxus has been telling me, there isn't a single half decent raid encounter in the entire raid and there was one half decent encounter and they ended up nerfing it up the wazoo because it was "too hard", despite 5 or 6 guilds clearing the hard version on heroic before they nerfed it. If making the entire game a Hello Kitty game that you can play with your penis is your goal Blizzard, than congratulations , you've accomplished your goal. What happened to raid encounters taking 4-5+ months? Remember when Molten Core came out for the first time? It was so hard that guilds couldn't even clear trash? Then the "nerfed" version it took guilds almost 4 months to get the world first FIRST BOSS kill? I miss those days. Why can't we get any content like that anymore in ANY mmorpg I've heard of? It's all Hello Kitty roflstomp bullshit.
Arena has been sating my appetite for a long time and now they went and nerfed/destroyed that too. So there's nothing really worth staying for anymore, World Of Warcraft is dead and it's about time I accept it. The glory days are over and it's time to move on.
So I'm looking for a replacement game with similar difficulty as Vanilla Wow was. I'll even take Burning Crusade, End Wrath Of The Lich King or beginner Decent long, hard raid encounters that take months to down, not two weeks. PVP content that actually requires a brain to play and not just spamming 3 buttons. Or are all mmorpgs "so easy you can play them with your penis" these days?
I heard they were remaking EverQuest and I got excited, until I found out that they're remaking it the same Hello Kitty RoflStomp bullshit that Blizzard has been adapting, so I'm back to square one again. The new Wow expansion is being unveiled in 9 days but, not getting my hopes up. I highly doubt they're going to return any of the old content that would make me want to renew my subscription anymore.

ever tried Dark souls? Go for it. (RPG)
i don't know any difficult mmo's right now if you find one sen me a message
If you are pretty elite you could do the content naked (not you but your character), just an idea. It would give you everything you are asking for challenge wise and you would still be able to continue WoW. You could go down in mmo history as the Naked Elitist.
Seriously, you made me think about it and there is nothing I know that qualifies. I am more of a casual player and would love to find something more challenging like Vanilla WoW. Blizzard would make a good amount of revenue if they brought back a bunch of Classic WoW servers at about $6.99 a month.
edit: If you own Oblivion there are mods that make it very challenging if you want to do a classic rpg. I have been playing Morroblivion which is an excellent mod that combines Morrowind with Oblivions graphics and UI.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
You mention it so much I wonder if you have ever tried Hello kitty Online? I do recommend against ..... "I do not enjoy games that are "so easy you can play them with your penis" as this may have other connotations and get you a bad name ingame or banned.
Good luck with game search!
If my undead panda's don't get you...
I dont have any recommendations for you as what you want is not out there....
I can recommend lots of hardcore games that are quite fun but they are a totally different animal then WoW....
WoW did put together some great raiding content, if you were into that kind of thing, I was for a little while as it was something new and shinny but eventually I tired quickly of the Job known as raiding...
There is no game out that does that aspect of a game better then WoW and if WoW is dumbing it down well that is indeed sad... but it seem to be the way of the MMO... these days everything is being dumbed down....
But if you want to try something totally different then WoW and yet quite hardcore.... give Wurm Online a try....
UO,Shadowbane,SWG,Darkfall,MO,Wurm Online,Secretworld,GW,GW2,PotBS,LotR,Atlantica Online,WWII Online,WoT,Battlestar Galactica,Planetside2,Perpetuum,Fallen Earth,Runescape,WoW,Eve,Xsylon,Dragon Prophet, Salem

Yes, it is a bit strange seeing someone who plays WOW define themselves as hard core, but then again I realize some raids such as Sun Well back in the day were extremely challenging and few guilds managed to accomplish them when they were still fresh and new.
BTW, I was there for MC at launch, and while challenging once you got the dance steps figured out, (my guild was 3rd on our server to do so) there wasn't really much challenge outside of having the patience to spend 3-4 hours to clear it until you got your guild properly geared up.
But if hardcore raiding is the OP's goal, (because we all have our own definition of what hardcore means, for me it's more FFA PVP, full loot) then I'm reading that Wildstar is going to try an deliver much more challenging raid content which not everyone will be able to complete.
Might be his best bet, and there's probably a way to get into the beta if he works at it.
