Yo, make this short and sweet as I've gone through a lot of these threads and the sum up is all the same. I've played a lot of games and what I'm looking for now is a mmo where killing monsters is the a good way to level, so you basically grind monsters to level. Maybe not the only way to go, quest could be viable for the days you need a break, or w/e.
What comes to my mind that I've played and hits it on the head is Flyff. But i'm looking for a more recent game like this. Or just some names of other mmos in the killing mobs over and over is a good if not best way to level aspect, even if aged.
Must have a medium-high playerbase also.
Thanks

On the eternal quest for that one perfect MMO.
Older in terms of art and style, but Shaiya comes to mind as a game where grind, especially group grind, is still common.
I haven't been on for a few months. Not sure how the population is.
Thanks for the replies.
From my researching I have seen quite a bit about Lineage 2 and am really close to trying it, as its one of the only games left I haven't tried to this day. Is there still a nice playerbase? If I do start, since it is years and years late, would I even see other new players like myself? And what server(s) are recommened, I want as high a playerbase as possible. The open world pvp, also interest me a lot.
Tera was fun at first, I did play it leveled a sorc to 60 purely from the questline, which was monster grind quest anyway. Played a few end game dungeons and a couple of the what you can kinda call pvp but its more like a shit storm imo. I loved it at first but the non auto attack playstyle is just not for me long-term. Idk why. I got into really hard and then the next day, boom, not for me. I also attemped it again recently with the instant 58 character event with a mystic. Played literally to 59 and stopped.
And as far as Rappelz, Rohan, and games like that, are EXACTLY what I'm going for, but the only people left playing those I feel are the diehards, I would at least like a few newer people to straggle in every now and then.
This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
L2 is definitely worth a try. Just be warned everything about that game's controls is 'awkward' to say the least. It is a real turnoff for some. You'll notice it instantly if it is an issue for you.
Pretty much this.
and I'm in agreement, I'd much rather kill monsters to level than be told to run across the map, kill 10 of something and run back again to collect my prize.
Or just kill 10 of something and then I get my prize.
I want to wander the map, kill monsters, delve into dungeons and kill monsters and essentially kill monsters.
monsters.

Awkward is a good description....The point and click movement is just horrible too......Its hard to watch your character run also......What about the Perfect World games and a couple of its offshoots? Those are pretty much grinders arent they?
granted some of their running animations are very stylized per race so that can be weird. However, the point and click movement is no different from Diablo or neverwinter Nights or dungeon siege so I've never understood why players have issue with it.

sorry to bother the thread but what exactly is LF and how is it greater than Grinder?

while you can follow the storyline if you want Defiance actually is a grinder in some respects. mostly you ride around the countryside fighting mutants, arkfalls, and aliens.
Vanguard: while questing on the Starter Isle is the best way to level, i used to spend most of my time exploring and grinding on my ranger. cannot attest to the current population. though i do know that most chat occurs in guildchat.
LotRO: if you go completely f2p you have to grind.

The player base in Lineage 2 is still pretty good. Chronos server is the most populated server. There are plenty of new players running around Lineage 2.
Wurm Online has a Horizontal Skill tree so if you want to raise your weapon skills then you go kill mobs and or other players or animals or basically anything that you can swing your sword(Or a plethora of other weapons) at even a tree up too a point......
So in this Regard Wurm could be what your looking for....
However, there is a lot more to Wurm then Combat and PvP... There is an amazingly deep skill system.. and you can if you have time raise every skill in the game.... But this is a feet that no one has come anywhere near as of yet... as skill gain is not an easy thing... So you never ever actually have a complete character he is always in development.....
UO,Shadowbane,SWG,Darkfall,MO,Wurm Online,Secretworld,GW,GW2,PotBS,LotR,Atlantica Online,WWII Online,WoT,Battlestar Galactica,Planetside2,Perpetuum,Fallen Earth,Runescape,WoW,Eve,Xsylon,Dragon Prophet, Salem
So Lineage 2 is looking like my best bet. Is grinding really the best way to go or is questing better? And will I need to spend lots of money end game to be viable, gear enhancement wise?
I checked out wurm and it just doesn't look like id enjoy it much, vanguard and lotro ive tried and cant really get into either.
L2 is prolly the grindiest AAA mmo I can think of. However, the NA community has been in decline for a long time and cheating is fairly pervasive. The plus side is that it's still insanely popular in Korea so there are frequent content updates.
If you're looking for something to capture the oldschool Ragnarok Online feel I would recommend Wakfu. It has the exact same graphic style only updated and is just as grindy. Though the community isn't exactly large and the combat is turn based which makes it very different than traditional mmos... though if you're looking for a break from WoW-clone combat this might be nice change of pace.
Edit: as to your questions about L2: You quest a lot in the first part of the game but after a week or two when you hit the mid 80s most of it runs out. There are a few daily quest stuff, but it's mostly grinding after that point. It's a Korean game so there is the whole +1 through +20 weapons/armor so being well geared requires finding a way to make money in game or using the cash shop. (Though I don't recall the cash shop being that bad back in the day, not sure about now.)
So, can't play lineage 2 due to gameguard issues.
Anyone who feels how I do about grinding already playing something? Ill join your server and stuff, or is anyone interested in starting up a game? Even a old one like rappelz or w/e if they have the playerbase worth starting again?
If you like a mix of grinding and Final Fantasy style combat, I would seriously recommend Atlantica Online.
If you dont' think leveling 9 different characters to build your formation is enough grinding, I don't know what else to tell you ;pl
I've been playing for almost 2 years now, almost level 142, the item mall is the only downside to this game as its really expensive but this is easily the game i enjoy playing the most. Argos is the most populated server, but I play on Thebes, which is pretty packed most of the time.
