Dev's disrespecting PC gamer's

honeybadger2013honeybadger2013 Member UncommonPosts: 32

Hi, just read about the mess up with ubisofts release of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag for the PC, can't help wonder why the delay considering that the game is a finished product ?!?!?!?

Also noticed a lot of titles being released EXCLUSIVELY on the console's ONLY. Are the dev's forgetting that ALL games are developed on the PC in the first place, for example CCP's title Dust 415, exclusively on ps3, WHY?!?!?!?. then there's Halo Wars, released on the xbox, epic fail. If they had released it on the pc with an sdk, it would of been a success.

What game are your ranting about?  I stopped following Ubisoft's titles since they screwed me (and many others) out of money and censored all posts related to technical support on the issue.

    Also,

    *devs

    *gamers

release on PC is delayed because PC games tend to be pirated a lot more than console games, devs (publishers you mean) don't need to wake up, they know what's going on and releasing a game on PC means lower profits, especially for single player games as those can easily be bypassed

When a game releases on a console before coming to PC or possibly not releasing at all on PC.

That my good sir, is the ultimate disrespect to the humble PC gamer,  forced to grovel at the knees of the mighty console!

    Oh the shame!

Damn. If thats the case I guess every luxury good ever that is not marketed at a price that everyone can afford is a massive disrespect! Looks like its time to start picketing Gucci and Ferrari!

Ofc they think the future is the console.

Are you complaining that the GOLD PC edition of Assassin's Creed IV gets ALL the preorder bonus' from ALL the retailers?

Exactly.  They delayed it.  Get over it.  It's by far not nearly the "piss on me" approach they took with Rayman to every owner of a WiiU.

It's nothing to do with piracy

Games get delayed on pc because Microsoft or Sony pay to have them as exclusives.

At least we get them eventually though, where as the opposite console often doesn't.

Not that arse about asscreed anyway - dishonoured Is a much better game.

The console market is much larger than the PC market.  Look at just the xbox live service, which hit something like 46 million users earlier this year.  That's easily 3 or 4 times the potential audience of PC gamers just with one console.  If you look at PC-exclusive games that have sold really well, most top out at around 10-12 million.  The Sims 2 hit 20 million or so, and it was pretty much aimed at the fairly huge casual-female market that later transitioned over to Farmville and other Facebook games.  The closest example of a non-casual PC game would be Diablo 3, which sold 12 million.

Compare those numbers to, say GTA V, which has sold around 30 million in less than a month, or any of the various Wii exclusives which usually sold 20-30 million -- on one platform -- and it's not difficult to see why publishers are more interested in consoles.  They're cheaper to develop for and have a larger audience that includes teens just getting into games (more young teens can afford a console than a gaming computer).

The problem for PC gamers is that the control and UI setup has to be completely reworked in most cases, which means most PC games end up with fairly crappy UI's or stripped down gameplay because they were designed for consoles first.  For that to change, there needs to be a larger potential audience for PC games, and that will never happen unless hardware and software prices really drop below the $500 range for a high-end gaming machine.

    You make me like charity

    No its not

Pc is the largest selling platform.

All consoles combined outsell pc, but no individual console does.

Quoting figures for individual games means nothing. The pc market, and pc gamers is more varied in its taste. Consoles tend to be boom or bust with their games, they're either massive hits like gta, cod and gow or they do nothing.

Its because they know us PC gamers are hardcore's. We will buy the game for our console because we'll have to have it, then when it release's for the PC, we'll have to buy it again to see how much it kick's ass over our console.

    Oh the shame!

Its because many PC gamers pirate the games the devs make and thats a far worse disrespect.

Most PC gamers haven't the inclination nor the knowledge as to how to go about pirating a game. Most people who use PCs are not criminals looking for a free ride. Lumping them altogether is just a gross generalisation and demonstrates your lack of knowledge and pandering to publishers wishes.

The real reasons for console favoring is control and future sales. Gone is the concept of loyalty to a developer, now the publishers would like to extend the potential for future sales by demanding use of online services to gain extras from their store. A PC release can get around this by incorporating fan made mods, thus extending the life of a game but ultimately giving publishers no extra money . DLC in itself isn't a bad thing, (unless it's day one), but the issue here is that publishers don't give a shit about a passionate fanbase, (who might be loyal to an i.p. and automatically buy another edition or DLC), all their care about is a water tight system so they can sell you extras, (or in EA's case bullets for a gun) and treat a product you bought as a service they can manipulate at will. It's a very short sighted view that treats it's customers as cash machines to be pumped by publishers for extras and leaves many would be fans resentful.

A better view I feel was taken by CEO Klemens Kundratitz of Deep Silver in this interview http://penny-arcade.com/report/article/saints-row-publisher-not-interested-in-uplay-drm-their-strategy-ignore-pira

To paraphrase he states that piracy isn't a new, 'thing', (which is true), and that their focus is bringing out a quality game which will encourage people to actually buy it rather then pirating it. That approach seems to have worked for them so far as sales are three times what they were for the last edition.

This looks like a job for....The Riviera Kid!

I disagree with fan made mods not giving publishers extra money.

If you look at the pc market, there are a lot more tail end sales than on console. Hell people still buy 12 year old games on the likes of gog. Recently there was that free update to terraria a 2 year old indie game, it shot straight to the top of the steam chart ahead of new AAA releases like Batman oranges.

How many more sales of arma did Bohemia make after day z? Or skyrim after stuff like the winter survival mod? Or warcraft 3 after dota?

When mods and free updates keep games alive, buyers get to hear about them through word of mouth and let's plays on utube, that's why great games like skyrim still sell well on pc years after release
  • goldtoofgoldtoof Member Posts: 337
I agree with everything else you say though omni.

I think with publishers, the smart ones like valve and bethseda know they make more money long term by allowing mods

The stupid ones like EA have a short term get money now attitude and waste a lot of time and cash on advertising looking to wow customers into day 1 sales, rather than trying to woo customers by opening up their games a bit, making good games that sell themselves and building trust by supporting their products long term.

Its cause they know you wont buy it til its 20 bucks anyway sooooo....why rush? :p

What other people has said, PC games gets pirated so the profit isn't usually that big compared to a console game.

If a company designs a game for a console, once they're done it's gonna take a while to make it work for the PC version. You can't just change the buttons and go, you've gotta change the code to make it work with PC. And as i said, they probably wont gain as much profit from a PC release and thus they rather delay it.

Keep in mind that "ALL" console games "eventually" come to the pc, regardless of what the developers or publishers want. They are called emulators. And the good news is, they will actually be getting easier to use since consoles are now becomming basically dumbed down pcs, making emulation even easier. You just have to be willing to wait a year or two.

To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.

The truth is they have more control over consoles for flogging dlc and what have you.
  • rainbowstonerainbowstone Member Posts: 5

    I feel that.

Not sure but I think even Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition is also exclusive to consoles...I feel kind of cheated but it was my decision to buy a PC copy of it. Just to have a good part of a story exclusive in a console. I don't know if it's available on PC now but I didn't bother anymore.

I fear that time when PC will be neglected as a platform for gaming.

GTA V has out sold every other video game this year. GTA V may eventually be ported to PC. However, Rockstar did not port Red Dead to pc. Rockstar has obviously concluded that releasing on PC costs them money.

You may be right on total sales but for an individual game basis consoles have much higher numbers.
