I started playing again yesterday. This game has some of the worst stuff that causes really bad eye strain for me. I want to enjoy it but I got really sick yesterday from a regular playing session. An extremely bad migraine that didn't really kick in until right as I was stopping. Made me fairly sick. I think it's a combination of things going on in game from the chat window not being able to be fully blacked out. As well as the font type.
To player and npc names that simply blend into the background way to easy. Does anyone know if there are any add-ons that give better font options for player names and such? Maybe one that even adds backgrounds behind the name text? I've done a bit of searching and have yet to really find anything other than older posts of people complaining about the same thing. Any help would be appreciated. It's really got my eyes screwed up atm.
Never had an issue with any other game. been playing with settings throughout the day (giving my eyes time to relax and come back and see how everything looks) and got most of it nailed down. Just the names blend in so well to the background. Even when scaled up. I think this is a huge part of it.

The settings menu is your friend and its quite easy change nearly everything to your preference.
Every type of mob/NPC etcetc name and text can be changed. Also UI and even individual UI elements can all be resized and repositioned. All kinds of player and npcs can also have Nameplates, also all tweakable from the same-name menu in terms of size or whether they show or not and in what situation (in combat only, always, when clicked only, etc)
No addons needed whatsoever. If you insist in using UI altering addons check Gadgets, but all of your issues can be resolved without any addon.
Also from personal experience, when you start having trouble/headaches reading things on your screen it's probably time to pay a visit to mr eye doctor.
Name plates aren't really a solution. They are good for 100 in game feet or so. After that stuff reverts back to normal unless I missed a distance option which forces them on everything. Eye doctor doesn't have much to do with it. Though I do plan on going. That said I'm far from the only one who has experienced this in game. It's the only game that's really screwed with my eyes. Just a combination of all the flashy crap, the type of lighting or whatever. I did most changes people suggested in those posts i've found but I'm still in the process of getting my settings right again. Making small adjustments then leaving it be and coming back later after to see how everything looks. I just figured someone might have actually made a decent mod for names like fonts along with the chat window. Poor color choices and font for names for both things.
They blend in for the most part no matter what color they are unless you have a solid background like the white floor in Meridian. I've played everything else anyone else has and Rift is the only title that's really screwed with my eyes. That's why I asked if anyone knew of a addon. I'm far from the only person to have problems with Rift. Posts dating back to 2011. Same exact thing. I did order a pair of pc glasses (polarized or whatever) should be here tomorrow. Cheaper ones just to see if they help or not. If they do I'll probably pick up a better pair.
I'll check out the addon you suggested.
Well, just check gadgets then see if that improves anything since the streamlined digitized UI clears up screen space.
Also if you have trouble with rift, never play wow, the ability to see anything in that blurry visual mess is like a full time job
