i think thats really good news, when i played L2 i didnt know any one else (aside from my brother) who played it (although 2 ppl in my old alliance before it disolved were like 2 miles away from me lol) but in WoW i know 4 or 5 ppl who play and several of my brothers friends (and his CIS teacher) play it.

All of WoWs NEW subs are coming from NEW markets, not previously tapped. And the far east is a rich vein of online customers. Their older markets have peaked though. I expect WoW to fade in the US and Europe but STILL have massives subs in the far east. I would not be surprised to learn that that lost 200k subs in the US but gained 500k in Korea for example, so they are still, technically growing.

However, 5 million Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese etc... represents a MUCH lower revenue stream than the consistant subs of the US and EU.

actually, according to a poll which i don't have the link from anymore, most World of Warcraft players stay for + 6 month's. thats a lot more then avarage mmorpg's.

    Gratz to WoW ... so .... 5 000 000 x $14.99 = $74 950 000 a month .. ?

Hopefully they'll take some of that obscene Profit and invest in a new MMO development that redefines MMO gameplay away from WoW's empty, recycled, high speed EQ formula.  Blizzard remade EQ how it should have been 5 years ago.  Time to actually move forward now.

All the current developments are falling far short on funding, talent and/or devlopment resources.  With 5 million box sales and paying subscriptions they should be able to fund the Manhatten Project of MMORPG development.

Grats to WoW. I used to bash it when I first left, but I'm over it. We all know there are problems eventually, but it was still one of the most fun games I've ever played, and like that other poster said, in EVERY one of my classes this semester there were always at least a few people who were playing. That was pretty cool.

LoL. No. ONLY US and EU players pay regular sub rates at $14.95.

In China, Korea, most of the far east, they do it differently, AND the costs are FAR lower. In China they DON'T buy a boxed copy, but a CD key and play on a pre installed version in an internet cafe. That costs about $5. With pre paid cards they play at the rate of about 5 cents per hour. Unless you have detailed figures on amount of tme played per user you cannot set a number for far east income.

    Nice assumptions.

However, the truth is, the koreans pay a regular subscription just like we do (believe it or not, THEY were actually OUR inspiration to start charging monthly fees on MMO's.). The most popular game in the world is Lineage: The Bloodpledge; in South Korea alone, they have a couple million players. They all pay a regular monthly charge. You are correct, however, that their subscription charge is different--that's where it ends, though. When converted into USD, they actually pay MORE than we do for the same games (For example, for Lineage, I believe the price was around $24 USD/month.).

Before you say things, actually research them. I wrote one of my senior projects on the MMO market in South Korea.

    ACtually, its not 15bucks everywhere.
In Eastern COurnties, mmorpgs tend to cost more. As much as 20-25+ american a month.
Also box costs are different in some counrties, Most mmorpgs in Korea dont change for the box since people play in Internet Cafe's so they dont have box sales factored in.

GrimmWraith, we can only hope your correct about them dumping funds into other MMO projects, hopefully multiple ones, that can lead the genre in a new direction. However, I really doubt thats going to happen. Instead of a groundbreaking game I bet they'll try to delve into the EVE/SWG/Planetside-esq market and go for a cookie-cutter Sci-Fi game that attempts to incorporate the elements of all three with some good graphics. I just don't have much faith in these large MMO companies, although I will always love Blizzard for giving me StarCraft.

In China the publisher is called numbernine productions or something.

Blizz got about 100m for the rights and get 20% of the revenues they make.

And allthough I am not sure I really doubt chinese players for example would pay MORE then a US player, the difference in income is just HUGE and would put the game at like a weeks salary a month or something stupid.

But this I will look up.

Regardless of how big the revenue stream is for blizzard from any one part of the world, rest assured they have NO problem paying their bills. :)

The western ones alone is such an insane cashcow it is really amazing.

I'm afraid your wrong. the Most populair mmorpg is Lineage 2: The Chaotic Chronicle. it broke the sale records of Lineage 1.
