If you are reading this you will probably be aware that there is curently a free 14 day trial of Eve available. However, to get the most out of this I would strongly suggest that you hold off for a few days before activating this.
This week CCP launched another expansion, or as they like to call it 'free content update'. It's worth noting that his is the kind of thing that SOE and Blizz will charge you for. However, as a result there is the usual instability and tweaking that should be expected with any major content expansion. This is made more shaky by extremely fast growing player base.... (the only mmorpg that I know whose players numbers have continued to steadily grow during its lifetime and still continues to grow - another record today 20200 on one server)
CCP are a great company (no they didnt pay me to say that) and their staff and gm's work really hard to give us the players a great experience, and I know that all the issues will be resolved in a matter days as they always have been in the past. Now you may think that i am selfish for asking you to wait and I would have to agree... firstly becuse it will make things stable for people already playing, but also becuse it benefits all players for noobs to have a great experience and to want to continue playing.
If you havnt tried EVE... definately do...
But give it a few days

Agreed. I'd just like to emphasize what infinitum said. The servers are going to be crapped out until Wednesday at the earliest. While they are getting better, they are nowhere near the stability level before RMR (the new content patch) was released. But this seems to occur regularly with their big content patches and from what I understand, the post-RMR universe is actually recovering quicker than most content updates.
Anyway, either hold off for a few days or just take heed that the problems you will be having will only last a few days into your trial account.
So, to sum up:
EVE's a good game folks and worth giving a look. Just wait till the servers stabalize after this latest major content update.
Oh and um... Infinitum? UO, EQ, Lineage 1, Lineage II and FFXI were all still growing in their 3rd years as well. It's ok to like the game it is a very good game. But lets be at least a little realistic in our praises. EVE is doing well for itself, no doubt. But the only records it's broken are 'simultaneous on the same shard' records. As far as number of subscribers overall it still has under 100k players. Though I think they'll pop over the century mark this coming year, if not by January.
Just trying to keep it real.
EVE is worth a look.... just give it a week or so for the devs to stabalize things.

Honestly I can say i havn't tried half of the games you have mentioned above. My comments where somewhat of a generalization based solely on the numbers of people leaving some other well publicized mmorpg and on that basis i defer to your better knowledge.
* Infinitum dishes himself a large slice of humble pie.
I'm hoping to get this game for Christmas this year. I've always thought about picking it up, but in all honesty I just never thought it would have this kind of longevity but I feel it's more than proven itself. And also, being someone who played both Lineage II and FFXI I can tell you that neither game steadily increased into it's third year, they simply managed to stay the same. The smarter players who'd been playing longer would get sick of the boring grind and leave while new players would replace them only to follow in their foot steps a few months later lol.
Anyway, I really hope to get this game for Christmas and join the rest of you guys. It's been a long time since I've actually be "excited" about an MMORPG. Most of them tend to kill your hopes for them, but I think this one has stood the test of time and will live up to my expectations. I do here it is a slow game to start out in though.
It's true Eve can be slow for noobs and the learning curve isnt so much curved as vertical.... but there is a huge amount of depth most of which new players are simply not aware of.
A good corp will help you with learning the game and provide you with decent ships and equipment, but be very careful as there are any number of dodgy corps out there too.
Look forward to seeing out there....
Convo 'quilan' when you get in and i will see if i can help.
