The Day/Night cycle of ToA. The darkness we need!

Trials of Ascension just updated their Kickstarter with a video of the day and night cycle in game, and an example of how dark it truly gets. (Which is super dark)

Awesome!! As a horror game fanatic, this is right up my alley. Imagine all the spooky bumps in the night there will be. The soft and subtle sounds of that Raknar coming up behind you. It is close... breathing down your neck. Perhaps those yellow eyes piercing the darkness, disappearing once you turn away.

I love how night time is more than just a cosmetic change like in other MMOs. Nighttime in ToA is going to be an absolute blast.

Now lets see how long it stays in the game. There is a reason it has all but disappeared.

I love true darkness in games!  You hear the snap of a branch off to your side and your heart starts racing as you try to find or hide from the source.

Dark nights + FFA PvP full loot = Fail

    Actually scratch that.

Attempt at any kind of immersion + FFA PvP full loot = Fail

It's almost like a horror game, but once the light comes back on, you aren't exactly safe.

ARMA 3 has some pretty black nights too. I really enjoyed playing the alpha (is it in beta now?). I liked it, honestly. I'm really interested in seeing how ToA does with it.

Don't be so sure. I thought bottled water would fail since 75% of the earth is covered in the stuff, and look what happened there.

I wouldn't rank day/night cycles that high up on my list of important things, but I definitely like such things when the setting is a world.

One thing that was kind of cool about Requiem was when night time came around, the world got more nightmarish. Scratch that. The day/night cycle and resulting environment was about the only good thing about that game after about level 10 or so.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Do you know what PvP will be like in ToA? Or are you assuming PvP in this game will be exactly the same PvP in other games?

I am all for criticism but you should probably try to learn about the game before you actually write it off simply because of 1 or 2 features.

I like the dark. I loved it in the original EQ and bummed they changed it. It was great running around when you couldn't see 2 feet in front of you then all of a sudden there was an orc.

People get excited over day n Night cyucles but in reality FFXI has been doing it for years and took it one step further.IMo it could go a lot deeper yet nobody is doing it,sad  at how lazy and such a lack of thinking from all the game designers.

geesh there were games 20 years ago that gave night n day some purpose with night creatures being more dangerous and more powerful and i see a couple fps games doing it now as well.

I also liked the added effect coronas had in Unreal,if you were staring into one,you literally struggled to see your opponent. All those little things add depth to our games, devs are just not willing to put in the added effort, games are now like assembly lines all using the same blueprint.

Simply adding a day n night cycle is not good enough effort,it takes literally no effort at all to set global lighting on a timer.if all the lighting was hand placed with strategic locations, then yes it would take a ton of effort, but all these games are using for the most part ,global lighting,it is a matter of a click/checkmark for each zone, takes about 15 minutes tops to implement.

In reality though there really is no such thing as pitch black, at least not under a night sky.

I've been in some underground bunkers that were pitch, but we are talking under a sky and even with heavy cloud cover the human eye can still pull in a little light.

Same goes for a dense forest or jungle. In some places no light at all gets through and it is pitch black. Like you said though, in open places under the sky it never is pitch black, just dark.
