Recently, Cryptic Studios and NCSoft launched City of Villains, their super-villain follow-up to the super-hero hit City of Heroes. The two games interact to create a PvP middle-ground and are available under one subscription fee. Staff Writer Laura Genender took the time to review the game.
Many of the missions seem similar to those you might complete in CoH, just with a different story to go with them (i.e. instead of disarming a bomb, you arm it!). The exceptions to this are the kidnapping and bank robbing missions, both of which are somewhat painful. In the kidnapping missions, I had some problems getting my victims to follow me without getting stuck. The bank robbing missions are nearly impossible for Corrupters or other delicate classes.
One cool new mission-related addition to City of Villains is the newspaper missions. Instead of being confined to contacts, villains can do randomly generated missions from the newspaper. You get a choice of three different missions, which means more choice in what kind of mission you run hate kidnappings? No problem; just volunteer to steal some top-secret documents instead. Doing newspaper missions earns you brownie points with the broker for your zone. The broker can then introduce you to new contacts so you can run storyline missions if so desired. |

Nice review overall. But I have a few points.
Bank missions: The pain is in the peoples running around, they should be face to the ground or available to be killed. The fact some folks can't solo is not a problem with the mission itself. Either those ATs should be specified that they can't solo well or adjusted, but don't blame it on a very nicely done mission. Banks missions are very nice aside for the peoples running in every direction in it.
Items of Power: They ruin the gameplay and the fun experience of any achiever who is not a dedicated PvPer, I think you didn't underline that aspect enough. Items of Powers should be stronger than what they are but they should only affect stats in PvP zones and be completely useless in the PvE content of the game. PvEers are going to mass exodus the game as soon as they understand how IoP shaft them.
I pretty much agree with most of the rest, although maybe not fully, like the lack of diversity is prolly slightly worser than you make it feel, yet this is arguable.

This game is a buggy, unbalanced, peice of trash.
Play something else.
A little laggy sometimes but thats the server not the game. I hardly see any bugs. It's a little unbalanced but give it time the ATs are different in CoV. PVP always takes some ironing out. And it's not a piece of trash just because you say it is. I bet you play WoW aka the most overrated game on the planet.
I rather liked the review, I think it was a good overall look at the current state of the game and I do think that some classes were made to solo while some are groupers for most their game time. I just hope people don't cry nerf. Think I'll go ahead and start playing this game again.

I only have 2 comments....the author needs to learn to play a corruptor, they are the closest thing to a tank/mage in the game...and if you really think that 1% from an IoP is going to make any difference in PvE, you need to put the crack pipe down.
I have tried all 5 archetypes to 14 now and havnt had a problem solo-ing with any of them. I'd grant that at this low level masterminds are easier than coruptors or dominators, but my coruptor (Dark/Dark) has no problem with the banks, and was the first AT i upped the difficulty levl on as she can snipe kill 2 minions in a group before the rest even reach her.
In fact the AT I find standing out most is the brute. Advnces at twice the rate of ALL other AT's given some blue/green inspires can just run through an entire mission without thought or stopping.
In fact my only concern is that i dont see any parity between the Villain and hero AT's villians "seem" much stronger.
Unfortuneately i base this on the diff feel of playing heroes/villains, no comparitive stats being available to me, but its how it "feels"
Good review overall tho.
Incidentally Cryptic/NC did a patch on Friday and the DB server and Mapserver has been completely sh 1 t since then. multi-crashes. I'll never understand why companies think doing patches before a weekend is a good idea!

I have been Playing CoH/V since the start and other then the one person that is troll. I have to agree with what everone is saying here. Its a great game. IMO best MMORPG on the market. There are some spots that need to be worked on. Just like CoH did. Corruptors are the weakest Archtypes so far in PvE. Masterminds are the easiest to play plain and simple.
Take a Look at my comic http://globaldefenseforce.com
I believe you meant Guildwars ^^
yes yes the correct answer was Guildwars
Guild Wars doesn't count it's not P2P.
The Lagmonster has nearly vanish by now.
I rarely experience any lag or heard of anyone experiencing any lag anymore. Gratz devs on this! Despite the X-mas rush, nearly no lag at all! That was wonderfully smooth!
PS: About the IoP, you don't want to start that with me, 1% is a TOO MUCH undeserved bonus in PvE and TOO LITTLE for PvP focus. IoP need to give many times more but apply only in PvP, NO IMPACT on PvE! Folks who enjoy to PvP would be happy if it was a 10% that apply only in PvP, they would defend those IoPs and they would care about them and it would not hinder PvE lovers in anyform.

I just read where Laura Genender, a Staff writer gave this game a "9" for roleplaying. A 9? Is she kidding?
No way is this game a 9. In fact, I don't think there's a single game out here that should rate this high in rp. And certainly not CoV or its partner CoH.
There's nothing to do in these two games but the same missions. No housing, no loot and not much of anything that comes into play when you rp. In fact you don't see any rp being done in thses games. How could you, when you have nothing to rp with?
None of these other games such as WoW, GW or any of the other top games any good at or considered roleplaying games even though they fall under the mmorpg title. At least not by real roleplayers which are not many but are extremely good at proper rp.
GW game play is practically all done in instances and again they have nothing that would be consistent with roleplaying. This is an example I writing about. Yet, GW also falls under the MMorpg, the rp banner as do most of the on-line games.
The only game that was excellent in rp was SWG and that was back then before the dumb CU's came into play. This is the only game where rp was done out in the open. They had weddings, parties and just about everything rp requires. But now, SWG is but an empty shell of its former self.
C'mon writers, don't sugarcoat these reviews, give out the real reviews.
CoV look good but its boring and sometimes too easy when going solo (makes me wounder if I'm too old for this game) and too freaking hard in a team. It's a real mess sometimes. And that kind of problem, piss me and the people in my team off a lot. Thats bad for the game.
You can change your cloths and thats about it. And I don't know whats so special about that(?)
Theres nothing for RP. And when you ask why, you get "we are Villains and Heros". So what! It's still a bloody game... bring some fireworks and party stuff! So people have something else then just missions.
And no loot, no armour, no weapons, no home, no animals, no crafting, no REAL fight, no OPEN world with Heros and Villains. NO HOT CHICKS!!! ...what?
It's fun the first week, then you see the empty towns and you are sick of doing missions.
2 of 5 points...
WoW is a poo poo game for poo poo people...
GW is not a mmorpg...
