Looking for a game that has alot of skills to learn and max out, examples i've played and enjoyed are runescape, Final Fantasy 14 ARR, Mabinogi and Ryzom.
I maxed out on both Runescape and FF:ARR, I'm now tring to find a new game, that isn't 100 years old with 1 person playing and the feeling like any time the game will be shut down. I liked how both Ryzom and Mabinogi do the skill system but they both had problems for me, Mabinogi felt more like "achievement" hunting, as you don't gain exp it's do x and y to rank up the skill, also the world just felt so dull. Ryzom felt the same, the world just felt empty and i didn't like how they did the gathering, parts of it i did like, such as searching for the spots and the quality of all resources was different.
I won't go on anymore just tring to give you an idea of what i did like and didn't. Tring to find either a classless game or the option to change class/skills anytime WITHOUT penalties, i know a few games let you change but theres penalties tied with that.
Just to add, i did play darkfall and really liked it befor unholy wars, but now after purchasing the game, i need to rebuy it. I don't want to do that just to test the game, also i've read they screwed up looting and some other things, i feel like it isn't as populated as i'd like.
EDIT: I have done research and found salem, i'm only put off because of perma death. Grinding all my skills and keeping them is how i play, if you have perma death in the game i feel like the "grind" will be short, i'm tring to find a game that will last me as long as Runescape, not level up in few days and then be killed and having to redo the process.

Although Salem has permadeath, it seemed an extremely rare occurrence back when I played. I think you might like the game. Give it a try and see what you think.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

You will not find any skilled base MMO's with good crafting unless you find a good sandbox... I have been looking for years, this was the reason I become a Dev, because I couldnt stand seeing this crappy crafting skills in games today...
The best way I liked was Asheron call 1, and SWG sorta, even though that was click this and that it was made I like the housing and items you got, I think we need more skilled base, meanin you h`ave items you search for, and having the right combo will make you a good idea, others will make the idea, but not as good, and not everyone will make the same item, because there are so many different combo's. This is part of it, I have a whole system I been designing for years.
Since beeing a gamer for over 30 years, I hate AI's in most MMO's , crafting and UI's. So I been working on those three alot , figuring ways to make them better... Most inventory systems have never changed since the 90's I even came up with a way to make them have less windows between inventory and your character window, all with one window instead of three... I plan to add this stuff in smaller scale games in the very near future, and extend on it, since I have never seen it before.. The group of people I have showed, seem to really like it...
I become a gamer/Dev because as I said I wanted to help better our games we play... I'm an Artist and a Programmer as well..
Anyways I posted because its rare to see people like what I do and that's a good crafting system.
I think the only other game that I liked the crafting but sadly did not like much else was Mortal Online. The crafting took skills to do .
If you want your work to mean something, Wurm Online... its a channeling to get 100 in crafting, and at high skills your work means something if you are playing for a purpose. There is pve server and pvp server, and you can sail inbetween both, but on the pvp server the skills are by far important.
Let me know if you decide to give it a look, we are on the chaos server, i can show you around a bit help explain some history about the server and game. Good luck in your quest.

Just gave wurm a shot, everything i'd want from a game but i'm not really into the whole "survival" thing, also the population isn't to high.
Vanguard was suggested but, from what i've read you're limited to each craft? or when you at least change you have a penalty?
also ff14 was suggested, in my first post i said i've already played it, maxed all skills to 50.
yes in Vanguard you are limited to one base crafting set. so blacksmiths remain blacksmiths though they can master either armor smithing or weapon smithing. you can switch between the two, but you have to level the skills related to each one again.
i will say this, the crafting system in Vanguard is the best i have experienced since SWGpreNGE and perhaps Ryzom.

One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

You might want to give Xsyon its a post-apocalyptic mmo with lots of crafting. You might have the same problem with it as Wurm, for now, its a survival game but you can easily avoid pvp since your tribe is a safe zone and honestly pvp is hard to find even if you want to cause people are too nice to each other But it was recently announced that there will be a pve server when it lauches on steam (just got the steam greenlight ).
It has a small but really great community welcome tribes as well as the ability to solo.
Managing your stats and skills is a challenging puzzle. New skills are in developpement like farming and cooking (also projected for steam launch). You can theoretically max all skills since there is only a soft cap.
You can try it for free for as long as you want but your skills limited to 30. The sub option would probably be what you want.

Come and try it.
Age of Wushu.
You can't craft everything with one character but the crafting system is fun with mini games. It is one of the better crafting systems I've played in a while.
unfortunately i'm only really looking for a game that lets you learn all crafting skills or at least switch without losing anything (alot like FF14:ARR) Thanks for the suggestion though.
Still looking for a game, just tried salem and it's not my cup of tea, only thing so far thats keeping my interest is mabinogi, even though it has flaws.
SWG And there was no difference from pre to post NGE like so many claim minus a juggle of the professions. But the NGE actually brought more to crafting. The main mechanics never changed nor the process.
But Pirates of the Burning Sea had a pretty good crafting system set up. I was surprised.
Anarchy Online wasn't too bad either.
Fallen earth many say was pretty good.
Some of the newer games coming out will have better crafting. But most the new age themeparks you will not find even a half way decent crafting system.
The Repopulation, Origins of Malu, and Archeage are to have some pretty good crafting systems in place. Just have to wait for those for 6 months to a year.
Why? If you are looking for crafting, you should know that having all the skills on one toon destroys a player based economy and directly effects crafting lol. When you take away specific crafting skills and allow each person to be all of them, you take away barter, relying on fellow traders, and you become self-reliant which is bad for a good crafting game. Then the markets start to get flooding with meaningless items and items that normaly bring in money are worthless since there are 5000000 of the same item around.
Just wondering why you would want this and still want a real crafting game
Well, i disagree i know a few games that allow you to level all skills, runescape, Eve and Goonzu to name a few i know of, and there ecom system isn't screwed by this. (havn't played goonzu in years so don't quote me on that now).
some people level crafting skills for an achievement, others to actually make money, some just for something to do while they wait for other stuff. As long as the grind for these skills is long, most people won't bother doing them unless they actually enjoy crafting, this also makes it so people won't bother leveling skills they don't enjoy unless they want everything maxed. If theres no grind, then yes everyone will be making stuff to sell but then games like this the items you can make arn't even worth while anyways. Dungeon stuff will be better and easier to obtain without a 30 day grind.
You've convinced me to at least try it.
